How active/dedicated is the development and how much focus is being put on the Escalation mode? I'm interested in getting this game because I've always deeply loved semi-sim type aircraft games, but don't really care for them outside of sandbox-ish settings, and Escalation seems like the perfect blend of everything I've wanted out of a game like this. However, I've also been burned by some 'perfect blends' before when they get abandoned or butchered and simply don't have the time to invest in another one.

@@markoliver8914very active, they are trying to put out a major update every 3 months. last 2 ones both had an aircraft and lots of other goodies, like economy, destructible and additional cities, a bunch of new weapons, carriers, reworked flare system to almost completely remove RNG, etc

there is also the EW-25 Medusa now, being able to temporarily supress radar, or using Anti Radiation missiles to permanently supress them .

Thing is, I'd strongly argue that this game has more realistic flight physics than war thunder. But you have to put far more time into it due to the grind.

Oh! In case you haven't tried this yet, since you're on a gamepad, try disabling the Virtual Joystick option. That should allow your Right Stick to give you freelook and map control I have no idea why the Virtual Joystick disables this

Sure, Comanche 4 is still decent as is Ace Combat, armored core and project wingman. Also consider GunMetal, made by the same guys as hostile Waters.

Short of very old sims from the 90s that are pretty tough to get the grips of (quality of life stuff mostly) I think this is totally unique. Arma 3 might be the closest thing I can think of but it’s not a flight sim.

Undercooked, no. Early access, yes. I think the team is 1-2 people making all of the content, they are doing a great job so far.

It's pretty much stable with all the contents. They are just adding more and more contents later on. No need to keep people waiting for the game to be finished when they can buy and enjoy the game.
