Could never wear a salomon shoe due to having wide feet but watching y'alls reviews is always a treat. Just recently got back from a trip to Japan and man, all the trail runners out there love Topos or really anything with a very minimal stack. It was really different from preferences in the US.

I have always been super fascinated with the footwear trends of Japan. Always been much more minimal. I remember a decade ago when I was still racing track, the trainers over there were US racing flats and there were almost no American sized trainers over there

@@ConversationalPace Yea, I noticed most of the shoes runners were wearing were either very low stack (one store said their most popular shoe only had an 18mm/24mm stack height) or heigher stack shoes but the foam was very firm like the Asics S4. I bought a pair of Asics S4s there and have done a few runs in them. They are fast but definitely different than the most popular shoes here.

Salomon speedcross 6 and speedcross assault are available in wide. I have several variants of the XA models in standard and wide. I definitely prefer the wide. I prefer wide in the X-Ultra line up as well. I wear a 11.5 wide in Salomon’s, just tried a 12.5 regular width in the speedcross 6, I probably could have got away with just a 12 after a little break in on the upper to stretch a fuzz. My biggest complaint/the reason I boxed them up before even putting the second shoe on, was the tongue was much shorter. I struggled getting my foot in with the tongue pushing down-almost turning/twisting. I let all the slack out for plenty of room to insert foot and it was a disaster. Maybe after a few times wearing them out would have been easier but it was such a hassle, I didn’t even want to wrestle with them a few times till they broke in. Salomon’s warranty is solid and replacement was a breeze and very speedy!! I’ve tried many brands and styles, I always come back to my trusty Salomon’s. The speed laces got me hooked like a fat boy and came.

I think Salomon should up their game with outsole rubber. They just aren't on the same level with Vibram, Continental, VJ, Inov-8 and asics. My ideal Salomon shoe would have narrow sole especially at the heel, room for straight big toe but otherwise narrow last, no extra room for bunions, ~5mm drop with slight rocker(not as extreme at heel & midfoot as slab pulsar), 20/25mm stack, one piece matryx upper with proper water drainage, no removable insole, anti-debris collar, quick laces with 5 pairs of eyelets, no rigid heel counter, pull tabs at the heel and lace pocket, velvety anti slip materials inside, directional 5mm+ lugs, and proper rubber. S/lab pulsar 2 upper is ideal around the heel!
@ConversationalPace

haha I love such a specific list! I don't think such shoe exists. Seems like it would have bits of Nnormal Kjerag with a pulsar knit, chunkier outsole, and a more squared off toe box. That shoe would be rad!

Here in NH , I feel it may be alittle too soft/high stack for white mountain races , so for race days here I’m looking at the VJ Maxx 2 or Kjerag for more grip and response.

I'm surprised you guys don't typically really talk about the drop, seems you don't have a preference. I don't like high drop shoes which to me is 8mm and up. Yeah, I’ve been saying the same thing about with Solomon for a long time when they came out with the ultra glide. I really thought they were going to discontinue the ride back then cause there’s not that much of a difference for drive ride I think it lasted longer, and I had the S lab polar Trail soft ground, and it was just so narrow from my feet that it was like the narrow slab I’ve been in that After 20 miles my feet were aching. I did a 50 K in it and it’s kind of wrote in a letter of my suggestions just a little bit wider and the new one came out and they had a Solomon. They are running store and I want to put it on it’s even tighter, so maybe I’ll look at soccer exodus ultra and more comfortable more fun but I might look at this as long as my toes have some ability

I have two problems with the Kjerag: Non-gusseted tongue and loose ankle collar that let in dirt and gravel *regardless* of whether a gaiter is used -- this is unforgiveable on my terrain; the forefoot is too narrow right across the metatarsal heads, so a bit of swelling or steep downhills means compression pain.

I think one of the biggest reasons is the $150 price tag vs $200 for the s/lab Genesis. Great conversation. I am big fan of the Sense Ride saga since its first version and also I got Ultra Glide (I loved it). I was questioning myself if I should get the Genesis. Having Sense Ride for daily training, Glide for recovery / slow-long runs, Genesis for racing and various adventures. Seems like a good combo. Or just have all in one with Genesis :D

Haha I am definitely not one to use one show for everything. I much prefer a quiver of shoes like you've got, but mostly so I can keep trying new things out 😅. It's true with what you've already got, it's hard to find a space for the Genesis

@@ConversationalPace I only have left a pair of Sense Ride 4, which I alternate with Torrent 2. Ride 5 and Ultra Glide 2 are strong candidates :D

Definitely another shoe that would line up against this Genesis. Especially with the Matrix upper and being 'only' $160

Would have loved to see a deep testing of the Slab Genesis which is probably the best trail shoe from Salomon in the last couple of years

Our original goal for this video was to do a comparison, but we weren't able to secure s/lab genesis samples 🥲 hopefully as we continue to grow as a channel, the review opportunities will be easier to come by so we can give the people exactly what they want!

Arghhh. You’ve switched sides, this is so confusing. The guy rocking the puffer needs to be on the right, the voice over guy needs to be the left.

Haha oh whoa I didn't notice! We used a new recording software for this one, so it must have switched us 😅
