I came here to say exactly this, that's the wrong way to add salt. Saline solution: 20% salt, 80% water, and try with only 1 to 3 drops and see how it opens, you can add more but I suggest to start with only 1 drop and see the difference. More info in Liquid Intelligence by Dave Arnold

Msg is the sodium salt of glutamic acid (salt here being a chemical categorization, not all salts are salty, what we call salt in every day life and has that typical salty flavour is the sodium salt of chlroide) Glutamic acid is an essential amino acid, and is found in many foods, such as protein rich foods, tomatoes, and mushrooms; it is responsible for the 5th basic taste called umami, or savoury. Considering you've covered 2 of the basic tastes in this video, perhaps it might be interesting to also look at adding the remaining 3: sweet, bitter, and sour, perhaps even combinations

Probably if they add saline the same quantity the add water drops, the change in solubility would DRASTICALLY pull oils out of the spirit. However, tequila might be out of that. Where I live, the standard way to salt it is by rimming the glass with salt.

@@NothingXemnas Here is the thing - I am all for saline solution. Salting the glass (as well as adding salt directly on your tongue - as well as adding a pinch of salt into a small sample) make you really experience real saltiness in your drink. The amount of salt is far too much just to simply use the modifying properties of salt.

This is how I go for cocktails and even coffee sometimes. I have a dropper bottle with a weak saline solution in my bar cabinet. I've never used it in straight whiskey (or any spirit-forward drinking) but I'll give it a shot tonight. A little can pop, too much makes it salty - thus the dropper.

Most table salt is iodized AND contains and anti-caking agent like sodium aluminosilicate, or (Ca or Mg) carbonate . The "plain salt" at least contains no iodine. I'd use kosher or canning salt and use A LOT less. Flavored salt, (truffle, smoked, peated) seems like another topic.

Some companies do a wine infused salt, seeing as how some whiskeys are aged in wine casks, maybe wine salt could bring out some of the wine notes more?
@hewhowalksamongthetombston52874 жыл бұрын
pure sea salt is what you should be using. the fact the are so many different types of flavoured infused salts, it will affect the profiles a lot and ruin any whiskey, bourbon or rye flavours and profiles that were already there, pure sea salt will give you, a much purer, cleaner, and rounded profile and it will enhance any subtle background notes. table salt has anti-caking agents that could affect flavour, pink salt is a nono its mined from the salt mines (food-grade rock salt) and msg you won't get any benefits from that unless it's a sweet whiskey like Monkey Shoulder, then the savoury sweet element comes in. smoked sea salts, sound an interesting one to try although I would be very careful with the amounts used. Tell me what you think?

GUYS!!! PLLLLLEEEAASSSEEEE... Look up the Miracle berry. You can buy it in pastel candy form. It used to be a novelty in the victorian age at parties. It completely changes the perceived flavor of things, like... you can eat a fresh lemon after having a miracle berry pastel and it will taste sweet like oranges. "Miracle berry or Synsepalum dulcificum is a plant native to West Africa. Miracle Fruit contains a glycoprotein called miraculin, which binds to the tongue's taste buds when the fruit is consumed. Miraculin acts as a sweetness inducer when it comes in contact with acids, causing sour foods to taste sweet, temporarily." Some people try it with really cheap booze and it can make it taste good. So it'd be interesting to see what effect it has on top shelf stuff.
@michaelb17614 жыл бұрын
Salt and sugar also conteract each other. If a dish is too salty, you can add a little bit of sugar to counteract the salt and tone down the saltiness in the flavor, but yes, a little bit of salt (much less than the sugar in a dish) will enhance the sweetness for some reason.

Salt in coffee comes from large crew fishing vessels that run long hours to freshen up old stale coffee that they made gallons at a time and are keeping warm. They would make several gallons and put a cup of salt per 5 gallons. If you have ever been in an office and someone left the pot on and you really want a coffee without make a fresh pot sprinkle a bit of salt in it and it will freshen it up and not taste so burnt and stale.
