Daniels favorite is longmorn 16 green label , which they don't make any more and that's why in one episode he admits that he bought an entire case of. It's like $400 or more usd if you can find it. So longmorn got a new master distiller and he changed the 16 to something new , different , whatever . It's still 16 years old but it's different so it is now purple label .

I totally get what Daniel is saying and I thought of an analogy. It's like ordering a cab somewhere vs a limousine. A limousine makes it a totally different experience than just getting a ride. You cannot compare because they are two different experiences and purposes. It's like your $500 scotch is a special occasion whisky. You can't replicate the special occasion factor it creates with a cheaper bottle, they are two totally different experiences.

Daniel's point about the Pappy and making an experience out of drinkinv whisky really resonates with me. Unfortunately pricepoints almost force us to be very skeptical of the quality and ability of a whisky to stand on its own, but if you're going to spend the money you earned, you owe it to yourself to make it as pleasurable as possible.

When I was in the antique business sometimes we would get a really neat piece in that we got for a song. We would price it very, very reasonably for a quick sale. Sometimes it would not get much attention even though it was a roaring deal at the price point. So we would re-price it three or four times as much and WALLAH all of a sudden people would find the item fascinating and it would sell quickly. People are affected by price. (I am also at times, even though I know the trick of it, it can be a hard psychology to resist)

The thing about the 270$ whisky vs an 80$ whisky to me is this. Sure, I might get more enjoyment from the 270$ bottle but might I not get more from over three bottles of 80$ whiskys that would keep me happy for so much longer?

It all dependa on your drinking style and what you're wanting to achieve from it. To simply enjoy a nice few glasses maybe get a little relaxed sure, $80 bottle. There are a lot they mention I can't even FIND here, mostly bourbons though so it kind of makes sense them being in Texas vs my being in Canada. And I'm in BC so relative to the rest of Canada we have fairly expensive liquor already, and most of the Canadian whiskys are from Alberta or Ontario so we don't necessarily get great prices (in BC) on our own stuff due to how Canadian liquor laws still annoyingly) work. I have just "discovered" these videos from WHISKEY TRIBE, and I feel that it gives me a kind of honest and exactly information that I need to understand Whisky more than just drink it because of the taste. No snobbery and prejudices about Whiskey or Whisky lovers but pure facts and challenges to make your own evaluation. It's not difficult to drink Whisky, but it's sometimes difficult to choose a Whisky you don't know anything about e.g when you have 50-70 $ in your pocket and try to pick one in an average liquor store. You normally want a normally known brand and an understandble label on the bottle that inspire you to buy it, but out of hundreds of bottles it's sometimes just an unqualified choice. Well, I have about 45 bottles waiting for me in my home many thousand from where I am now, and I know that I have about 42 bottles of those, I still haven't tried before, so I am very excited. I have a couple of Balvenie 25 yo, Walkers Blue Label and a selection of 18-21 yo bottles, but I guess most of my "collection" is average in the area of 50-60$ per bottle. Many of my Whiskies (japanese, the Balvenie and Blue Label) is bought years ago, and somehow I can't get myself to open thesse bottles and enjoy the expensive drops. I'm just waiting ... I don't know why. Perhaps I'm afraid to be dissappointed! E.g. I had a 21 yo Ballentine and I really expected a heavenly experience, but unfortunately it was very boring, therefore I daily take a class or two of average Whiskies instead. The latest I discovered a Whiskey called Monkeys Shoulder, and I have to say that it have a fantastice taste, and together with Delaware 15 or 18 yo Whiskies they become some kind of favorite to me, when I just want a glass. I like the taste of Whisky and that's why I buy and drink it, but I really need some motivation or advises to dare to open my "gold" . Blue label, Balvenie and my small collection of Japanese Whiskies, which have been over budget. I have taste few, and I am positve surprised. At first I found them a little clinical, but after a few eksperiments with a few drops of clean water they beome very tasty. To be honest ... besides Whisky I like vodka very much - but this is a different story. 😁

Hi guys - I’ve only just started my whisky journey and have been loving your channel. It’s been my Rosetta Stone to the world of whisky! An interesting aside to this topic is the different prices of whisky (and spirits more generally) in different countries. I’m in Australia, and here, spirits are taxed very highly, compared to for example, the USA. The price of imported spirits (and goods generally) is also affected by fluctuations in the Australian dollar, which is in the trash at the moment (hovering around US cents). I just bought my first bottle of Laphroaig 10 (loving it!!!) and it was $100 AUD (approximately $60 USD, at the moment), which is actually a pretty typical price in Australia for decent whisky. This compares to Daniel’s statement that he’s found Laphroaig 10 for $30 USD ($50 AUD). So the relative cost of whisky here is much higher in Australia than the USA. Even the locally produced whiskies are expensive: for example, entry level Lark Distillery is $163 AUD, but it is excellent! I feel this is going to be an expensive journey ... but worth it!

Dan's point on people enjoying something more because they spent more on it, is extremely valid. I play electric guitar. In that field, there are innumerable player who will SWEAR by a part in a guitar or a amp. They spend sometimes several hundred dollars on parts that make such a minor difference that it is almost impossible to distinguish between the original part. But they will almost fight you on the principal that this sounds SOOOO much better now frankly because they spent so much on it and their brain is looking for the value they think is in the new part.
@saint-cetacean5 жыл бұрын
Daniel's point about making a big spend a story definitely resonates with me- when I graduated college, my grandparents took me out for a nice dinner, and at that dinner, I thought it would be worthwhile to order (with their blessing) a drink that I would ordinarily NEVER look twice at (Okay, that's a lie, I would definitely gaze wistfully at its menu listing and pointedly ignore the price on the righthand side). After a minute of thought, I ordered a glass of Grand Marnier, yeah it's not a whisky, but it's a liqueur I have always loved, but specifically their Cuvee 1880, a bottle of which costs about 10x the price of standard GM. Not only was it one of the most fantastic drinks I've ever had, it was a *truly* special occasion, and whenever I taste Grand Marnier, I'm reminded of that evening and of the pride of graduating college. Was it an irrational amount of money to spend on a drink, all things considered? Probably. Was it absolutely worth it? Yes. Would I do it again? The moment I have a job that pays me 4-5x what I make now 🙃

Love you vlog lads. I cut my whisky teeth on Lagavulin 21 year...not a bad place to start, eh? Still adore it. I've tried explaining to those who simply say "I don't like whisky" after they've tried a supermarket 37.5%ABV blended, sold in a plastic bottle, gut-rot special, or even Chivas Regal (which is so over-rated when Monkey Shoulder is cheaper, smoother, more complex and higher quality as a blend),....sorry, for carried away there.... there's a whisky for every mood and every occasion except breakfast, operating machinery, or driving obviously. Talisker is fantastic to sip and take your time over, it burns, it's peaty in a peppery way, it's magnificent, there's Lagavulin to enjoy in front of a log fire on a winter's evening or at a night-time beach party, or Glenfarclas 105, which is seductively smooth, complex, but cuts your legs from under you, and then at the other end, there's Tullamore Dew, and Irish blended Whiskey, that's sweet, not too complex, and very very smooth, for just enjoying after work. Then there's the surprise, the 5 year old Glen Grant. It's a mixer that mainly goes to Italy. It's smooth, very smooth, but it's the very antithesis of complexity that makes it so damn good. It's utterly clean, it's like the purest essence of what makes whisky what it is, and that is all that that it is,and all of what it is is that, there is NOTHING else. Whereas a Lagavulin is like listening to a full orchestra and full choir in an opera, the Glen Grant 5 year is like listening to an a capella solo of Ave Maria by Dame Kiri Tekanawa.

Daniel’s mention of the fact that “story matters” reminded me something I heard in a speech some years ago: “History is comprised of only two things. What actually happened, which can often forget details of or not get the facts right, and also what it meant to us” What a thing means to us is always more powerful for our experience than what it actually is.

Daniel, I completely agree with you on people psychologically thinking something is better because they spent more money on it. But it's amazing what nurture will do to affect that. Growing up, my family would always joke about meals that received for free for various reasons, and when evaluating the food would always remind each other that it didn't cost us anything, and suddenly everything would taste better. While we often times would just be joking, we did carry some truth with it. As I've grown older it's something that I continue to carry with me and actually consistently feel the opposite of what you were talking about. To me, cheap items constantly out perform their price point and taste better, where as more expensive items consistently fail to impress.

He freaked out when I pulled it out and felt so honoured that I would share the last few ml with him. He was ecstatic when I gifted him the case and the bottle. So yeah, I agree. There are two centenarians that credit their longevity to whiskey, Richard Overton in the US and Grace Jones in the UK. I actually started smoking cigars when I heard about how many Richard smoked in a day over the past decades. I then made connections with Winston Churchill and to Hugh Heffner, and came the realization that you can live a long life, enjoying tobacco. A metabolite in nicotine, cotinine is actually being studied for PTSD, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, depression, and parkinson's. Looking to do a bit more research on whiskey, a good start would be on the ellagic acid content.

Picked up a Glenglassaugh 30 in Louisville KY for $270. Also found Tomatin 1988 for $130 in Lexington.

I agree with Rex, diminishing returns definitly exist and after a certain price point you might get a 10-20% better whisky for 3-5X the pricepoint. So to get a whisky a little better or a little more complex than 40$ you would have to spend between 120-200$

both of their points is valid, the nuance is in the fact that you enjoy it so much BUT you budget accordingly

I measure all bourbon against Wild Turkey 101. That is bourbon to me. Now, I tend to save a few bucks and stock my bar with Evan Williams Bottled in Bond because it is comparable and $8 cheaper. That said, I had a drink of Booker’s at a bar once and I loved it. I also had a drink of Knob Creek Single Barrel and that was very good. I just have a hard time spending more than $30 on a bottle of liquor.

Where do you put Makers Mark?
@robertporter66412 жыл бұрын
@@desertrainfrog1691 I don’t. Maker’s 46 is really good due to how sweet it is. I could take or leave regular Maker’s Mark. I didn’t find anything about MM that distinguished it from the pack imo.

My appraoch to whisky is similar to the one I had to pipe tobacco. Started with light, aromatic tobaccos because the more complex flavours overwhelmed me. Same for whisky, I started with Bushmills 10yo, VAT 69 and Jim Beam.... and now I love Islay! Still find VAT 69 amazing considering the price!

I have a recommendation for a "Featured" "Crowded Barrel Alliance" label. THere is a VERY small distillery outside Frankfort, Kentucky named Three Boys Farm and Distillery. Excellent product.

Agree on the 85$ price point. I got some makers select that was 85$ that used like vanilla staves and a few other select ingredients in the barrel and it was worth it. Also I got bookers backyard barbecue special batch for 80$ totally worth it. But I got a bottle for 105$ that was 12 year old bourbon on a trip to kennesaw Georgiq and I found it to be super "oaky" and bland in general. 85 is the cutoff most of the time I stick with stuff from 40.00 to 80.00. Great video.

I did myself a deed doing exactly what you guys said when asking for a pour of a crazy expensive bourbon, i enjoyed it with friends, and i still remember this vividly, that bourbon, amazing whiskey it was like a cascade of floral sweetness honey, vanilla, INCREDIBLY SMOOTH its why it was like 40 bucks a shot and 1450 dollars a bottle would i buy that whiskey, probably not, but to have that taste and that memory, priceless

For my opinion scotch drops off around $150. But up to that area is where you find the great 15-18 yr olds, amazing cask strength goodies, etc.

If you're going to infuse any whisky with eg. ginger ale then all brands fuse into one similar taste, regardless of price. Many people just won't drink whiskey neat or with a little water or ice. I personally can't drink rye bourbon neat; it's too astringent for me; it has to be lightened with something to make it palatable.

Not sure if you guys have messed with it before, but you should do something in this vein except you should take steps to bring the cheap whiskey up closer to the same level as the pricier one: I remember reading an article online about a lady who dropped things like charred oak cubes and cacao nibs in with her Trader Joe's rum in order to infuse it and make it taste better. I'm just thinking you guys could attempt something similar with infusing whiskey.

Here in AZ out of Kingman there is a rum distillery called gold miners and they make an aged rum that tastes very close to a middle range burbon

you can probably take a bottled in bond 100 proof for about 15 bucks by the liter and put in the 1 quart mason jar with white oak chips properly toasted,come back 6-7 weeks that will be some good whiskey.I do this all the time with wild turkey 101 and it tastes pretty good.

I'm two and a half years late to this video. BUT what I wanted to say is this. I've heard Daniel say before that his preferred method of correcting people is "Correcting them by by repeating what they were trying to say, but correct" (in that case I believe he was talking about how to say "Isle" for the Scotch region). But in this video he more than proves himself by correcting Rex, who says that Pappy van Winkle is a scotch. Daniel then explains that for such an expensive outing, you make it it's own experience, and that experience makes this BOURBON better just because of the whole experience surrounding it. After watching maybe 100-150 videos of theirs, he just proved that he really believes what he is saying, in that the best whisk(e)y is the one you enjoy, and that he will promote that idea in his own subtle yet meaningful ways as much as he possibly can, while still encouraging anyone who might be interested, even the person he probably talks to about whisky the most to. Sláinte, everyone. Drink what you want, and drink it how you want to.
