During this time, I got a quick painting done of the mare and foal. Painting the West and America's Wild Horses.
Painting wild horses from life is the foundation for the work I do in the studio. I want to express the power, beauty and bonds that I see manifest in wild horses. The freedom, risk and challenge that is inherent in living wild in nature is reflected in my process of working from life. They are not solely paintings of horses, but reflected communication of their experience and our journey.

The youngster did fight hard but in the end the bigger male won. This is how it is in the wild. If a better suited animal is capable of taking something from another animal he'll try to take it and if he wins then that's how it is. It's nature. The mare doesn't care who protects her. She wants the best stallion to pass on his genes to her offspring. Foal protecting is left to the mares. All that was "robbed" from the young male was his mating rights.

That's how it is in the wild. Horses are not babied like they are in the human world. That stallion won because he was bigger and stronger. Survival of the fittest. ;)

That's how it's meant to be. Originally if the stallion didn't fight for a herd, he wasn't getting one. Stallions would form male herds for safety until they claimed their own group of mares.

+Sydney Dennis Stallions are known to adopt foals of either gender as long as they have a mare with them, or the stallion has an available mare. This behavior is also shown in Wild Asses, or donkeys if you'd prefer, and some species of Zebra. Either way, that's a solid observation, I agree. ^^
