My grandparents lived here and I had many happy visits up until the age of 15 when my family moved to New Zealand. Good to see the place again and I understand Roberts Park has been restored.

He named the town "Saltaire" after himself and the river Aire that passed thru this valley.

I would love to visit here. The title is deceiving however. You cannot separate the work that Salt did with his Christian perspective and ethos. The title says it's a "humanist" village - to the contrary - it was a Christian village, based upon the Biblical way of life, of work, and of how masters should treat those that work for them. Salt treated his workers well because he was acting in obedience to the Bible. Humanism says the world revolves around the individual; Christianity says the world revolves around God, His Word, and His laws.

I agree with your comment entirely. I think this is a very important point. The village was not humanist in any technical sense of the term, only in the vague layman's sense of 'not inhumane.'

The village was not humanist. It was deeply Christian. The word humanist is being (mis)used here to mean 'humane' .

Far from Humanistic, Salt's main motivation for caring for his workforce was his Christian faith. Despite being one of the wealthiest men in the world at the time, he gave nearly all his money away in his lifetime.
