In this video I talk about salting mussels for bait.
Mussels make one of the best baits for bottom fishing, surf fishing, rock fishing, etc
They can be easily collected or even purchased at a supermarket.
Salting them is very effective to preserve them and also to make them easier to fish with.

yes, that's correct. In New Zealand a Kahawai is similar to a large mackerel and hence it's a very oily fish. Great table fare but also good for bait. I usually eat most the fillets and use the off cuts for bait by salting them.

It isn't necessary to use non iodized salt. That only applies when curing freshwater baits with salt. 100% of salterwater shellfish as far as I know contains very high amounts of iodine in them. As I understand it, using iodized salt is actually better in order to prevent the naturally present iodine in the shellfish from leeching/coming out. Also, you want to keep the bait in the fridge while removing water especially if using rock/coarse salt since it sucks water out much slower from having less surface area of contact. Using very coarse salt will take longer to cure but will ultimately keep your bait as intact and fresh as possible. Removing water content too quickly can structurally break up your bait.

I question "ordinary table salt" -- depending on what region of the world. In the U.S., and many other countries, ordinary table salt contains iodine. Other fishing experts say that fish are averse to the taste of iodine, and instead they recommend pure, unadulterated salt (Kosher salt, for example) which don't contain iodine. Something to consider.
@Fishingreminder
@Fishingreminder 2 жыл бұрын
It should say on the label if the salt is iodized or not. We can buy either iodized or just pure table salt. But I guess it depends on the country. If unsure, one could just use pure sea salt. But honestly I don't think it makes such a huge difference which salt is used. I use whatever salt I have at hand if I need to salt some bait and that's usually just pure table salt.
