Great points Tony. I too take 2 as a minimum. I set 1 up for top water and the other for plastics. If I take a third, it will have a popping cork on it for live or plastic baits.
@Elthenar4 жыл бұрын
I do almost exactly this. I do bring a 4th rod though, but it is much heavier than the rest. 50 pound line on a Penn Spinfisher if I feel like using big live of cutbait. I've also been known to use that big rod to throw small bits of Gulp for pinfish so I don't need to rerig my others.
@ScottMacdonaldfishing3 жыл бұрын
Freshwater water 5 salt 5. I don't like rerigging when I am out the kayak. Maybe that's to many but it makes me feel like I have everything I need. I am a minimalist when it comes to gear and everything else.

Us guys from Texas do it totally different. For topwaters and twitchbaits I prefer a baitcaster with 30lb braid and a 20lb mono or fluoro leader. I like to palm the reel, I can sight cast quicker and generally like to use a 6’6” rod for those baits. I will bring a spinner with 20 lb braid with 20lb fluoro on a longer rod for plastics but sometimes I’ll bring 2 baitcasters. I will never bring 3 rods because that’s just too much going on rod storage wise. My kayak does have a rod holder on the left side but that’s generally where I land fish. Back left is the only place but I can still catch that rod on my windup if I’m not careful. Just got a 7’6” spinning rod for the kayak as an experiment but I feel I probably should have stuck with 7 for ease of fish landing

I have been using no knot fas snaps especially when fishing from a paddleboard. I have pretty limited room and I find that I can switch out easily. I bring one spinning and one fly rod. I put the fas snap on the spinning and have the fly rod rugged with the fly of the day. The biggest thing I have to remember is that sometimes these rust and will break at the most inopportune time especially when you leave a hook attached when storing.

I use about 6. Topwater, 4” jerkbait, 6” jerkbait, jig, twitch bait and something specific to the area or species I’m after. My skiff has lots of under gunnel storage so it’s no problem to carry this many. If I’m fishing in someone else’s boat I only bring 3. And yes the topwater rod is the general use setup that gets switched out as needed. Agree the general breakdown is based on water depth.
@justrighthartman43964 жыл бұрын
John Moore I’m kinda like you I most times bring my whole Arsenal of baits. But I’m beginning to find out I don’t really need all of them. CA Richards has a Flats Class University on Waypoint TV he goes over all that stuff in his classes. I think you would find them very interesting. Have a blessed day.
@Everything_Andy Жыл бұрын
I bring a medium light rod for flats and rock piles in the 10ft or shallower and then a medium heavy for everything else. The medium light for doa shrimp, live shrimp, fiddler crabs, and medium heavy for slow trolling the livetarget mullet and similar size in the 1/2-1.5oz and all from the kayak. And so these two rods allow me to do topwater poppers to small subsurface and small bottom baits like doa shrimp on a 1/4oz ball head jig(10-15lb braid to 15-20lb leader). Medium heavy/heavy for knocker rigs and slow trolling and live lining now if im going to be throwing live baits its more like lobing the live bait and then letting line out and kayak away from the bait a little bit and then slowely troll said bait(20lb braid to 25-40lb leader)

It's almost like I know what I'm doing. I use 3 setups the same exact way. I use a stradic FL 2500 and 4k, and a saragosa 6k for heavy structure and live bait.
@pinoygunnr88714 жыл бұрын
Awesome! I have a Stradic FL 3000 and 5000. I know he said a 7’6” M-MH rod for smaller reel, but would it be better to have the same length rod for the bigger reel? And if I run a Stradic FL 3000 on my 7’6” M rod, would I run the 5000 on a MH rod? And which and how big of a reel should I get to complement my 3k and 5k Stradics?
@MetalRush6664 жыл бұрын
@@pinoygunnr8871 I use a 7/7'6 med/mh for both. I switch them around depending on what kind of fishing I'm doing and for what fish I target. Some fish have softer mouths so a heavier action can actually tear their mouths. There are times I'll use my 6k on a 7'6 mh rod also. Experiment see what you like and don't like and what works for you. We are all diff and have diff preferences. Have fun and good luck 🤙
@MetalRush6664 жыл бұрын
@@pinoygunnr8871 what kind of fishing do you like to do? I think a 6k is a good medium compliment to the smaller stradics. I can catch about anything on it. I've caught black tips off the beach, Tarpon, Snook. Just about everything.

Chris Howard Tbh, I’m just getting back into fishing after not having fished since I was younger (maybe like 15 years ago). Currently I’m getting into fishing on the beaches, docks and piers on the Gulf Coast of Florida. We actually are planning to fish near Davis Island in Tampa Bay tomorrow, Tarpon Springs on Tuesday and the Crystal River area next Saturday.
@MetalRush6664 жыл бұрын
@@pinoygunnr8871 that's the area I live. I moved back last year. I didn't fish for 8 years while I was away. So I'm in the same boat. Trying to figure out new spots and get back into the swing of things. Don't have a fishing buddy yet but it's still a lot of fun. A 6k reel is a good start. It'll work on piers, docks, and the beaches. I recommend the Penn Slammer 3, Shimano Saragosa, and the Penn Spinfisher V/VI. A Penn Battle 3 is also good.
@Rainersherwood Жыл бұрын
A tip based on my own experience learning to fish inshore Florida; don’t leave your rods vertical if you’re in a kayak. This is how you break rod tips and guides and you abrade your line. Keep your second rod in the secondary paddle holder and clean it after the trip. You will damage your rod fighting fish if they are vertical. You will 100% be dragged into the mangroves at somepoint. Be prepared for it.

If you use a small power clip(not the cheap ones) then you can switch between any of these setups on one rod. I'd still recommend a second rod for a backup, or even set up as a weighted Texas rig since that can't be easily changed out on a clip due to the weight.
