Got into fishing about a decade ago here in Ft. Lauderdale when my friend and his pop started doing charters. The one thing that stuck with me was when they said the lure market is more catered to catching fishermen than fish.

Arrrhhh ... a moment. I love cast netting, and an hour cast netting before the fish day is awesome to me. To date, Mullet and prawns are my hot items for bait. I get bored too quick flicking lures and jigging. I know these guys catch more fish than me. But I love what I love ... sitting back watching nature, and the fish catching themselves. Nice to go home with fish, but I don't really care. We all have our bents ...

I’ve been looking for an experience based answer to the leader question. Thanks guys. I just bought a giant spool of 20’ and 40’ mono that I’ve put onto old, empty leader spools in shorter lengths. Glad to hear I’m doing the right thing. Love being able to retie without worrying about wasting a bunch of money.

You guys are quite a team. Great content and great delivery. From the time I was twelve as a deckhand on Commercial boats fishing for mackerel squid Bonita as I got older and bigger I went to work on albacore boats fishing Oregon. I'm now-retired at 73 I would love to learn how to fish the Oregon surf along with bottom fish Jetties rocks. Have zero experience with and reel but I'm going for it for it. By the way my most exciting fishery was working bait boats in Mexico for bluefin. What an absolute blast. I was the luckiest kid on the Block

Knots - I agree, and I've spent years figuring out the "easy way" that's also really good. I generally use 4 knots. Uni, Kreh loop, FG, and dropper loop. I have little to no use for any other knots in a fishing line.

One thing that I never buy anymore is any lead weights; I go for alternatives like tungsten or bismuth. If it’s a known toxic material, then I don’t think it should be used for fishing because jig heads and weights get hung up so much that the ecological impact is pretty huge. They’re known to kill birds, and who knows what they do to fish that a lead jig head is left in. TLDR, I try to use as little lead as possible for that reason, and I’d encourage others to try that too

Thanks for your perspective on modern fishing and I'm staying old school when it's effective. I love my old Abu Garcia Ambassador reels over spin casters and don't see many people using conventional reels on the beach or pier anymore. Got talked into using 80 lb braid for big fish in heavy current before figuring out if I hang up I can't pull the line hard enough to break it from shore or especially from a kayak. Also learned the heaviest reels I have can only put 20 lbs worth of drag on the line. Now I'm considering 30 lb mono on my heavy rods and a maximum of 20 lb leaders. I appreciate suggesting lighter spin casters for inshore which I'll try in the 4000 range. Hard for me to go with smaller reels just in case I hang a 15 lb Jack Crevalle wade fishing which happens occasionally. As for cast nets I love live mullet when I can get them. Again, for wading I put a 4 foot cast net in a shotgun shell pouch on my belt I've had since the 1980s. I dragged my bait bucket on a 12' fish stringer because occasionally sharks check my catch out. I definitely use a variety of plugs, but the fun of relaxing while the bait does the work is great. Besides I may net some bigger mullet for smoking. Kale hooks with their peculiar bend were common for flounder and not sure if circle hooks out perform them inshore. One note on sunblock, I've gotten sunburned and when I got back to my truck used a good sunblock that stopped the burn. Doesn't make sense to me that it works later, just better than using Solarcaine after the red sets in.

Aloe from a plant is best for sunburn and burns in general. I have a big plant that puts out babies I give people so they have their own too. On the 5th I gave one to a friend who's son was sunburned. The kid went from crying to playing, outside.

Right there with you on the Gulp. I still have them on my boat and they work, but they are a "10-cast" bait at this point. If you get more than 10 casts out of one of them in current, you're lucky. The newer ones just don't hold up at all.

Chemicals are in everything. Unless they’re PFAS, you’re probably fine to wear the clothing unless you have some kind of allergic reaction to the polyester fibers. But that’s a waterproofing material…shirts made for fishing tend to not be waterproof so they’ll dry out quicker.

I still like using swivels when joining wire leader to braid. It’s easy to join that wire with a haywire knot to a swivel, but it’s much trickier to join wire straight to braid.

I totally agree with you guys on most of the things that are manufactured to catch fishermen instead of catching fish. I too started as a Bass fisherman. I moved to TEXAS over 30 years ago and found that our water clarity here let us get away with a lot of things that are different in the Great State of Florida. I’m looking forward to moving to Florida after I retire here Soon. I’ve been visiting and fishing in Florida many times over the years. My best fishing tool is this dude I know. I have never once been out with this dude, and not caught fish. He's very insistant, and always does the exact same thing for snook - and it works incredibly well for here. He runs rat-l-trap silver with blue back, 3 1/2" 3/4 oz. and just slow chug trolls them behind the boat. Ideally 3 of them, short medium long so they follow each other around curves with lines crossing over each other. He does this on his beat up leaky ass aluminum bass (16 foot V nose jon boat) boat with a raggly little 2 stroke 40hp Johnson outboard. This dude is incredibly hard on gear - he broke 2 of my poles in one trip so I bring gear I don't care about on his boat. Last weekend, we trolled 2 using his broken 8 foot rods with beat up Penn Fierce reels spooled with I think 15 or 20lb mono to a heavy swivel, to about 1 foot of 40 or 60lb leader. Caught 4 snook, stopped at a bridge on the way back in and pitched pilchards at snapper, caught a few of those. I'm 100% guilty of spending a lot of money on gear, but Trey is proof that it's unnecessary. But I think it's also Trey because we took my yaks out with my gear, not using his rat-l-traps, and still caught a few snook. I've skunked that spot several times doing the same things. But its not the method I don't think. We ran offshore (yes on his ancient leaky jon boat) about 5 miles to a reef. No fish finder or GPS to even find it, and pulled out some yellowtail. The dude is my lucky friggin charm, even if he does piss me off every time :D

About live bait vs artificials, it’s both and, not ether or. If you’re on the water, and you see schools of baitfish, it’s well worth taking some time to get live bait when it’s plentiful. This WILL DEFINITELY increase your chances of having a good productive fishing trip, especially on slow days when they aren’t biting artificials so much.

Have been born and raised is southeast Louisiana in between lake Maurepas and lake Pontchartrain on north and south pass my dad had a shrimp boat but I worked from 6th grade through high school running my trout lines down there catching catfish to sale we had a camp on north pass win I was born then sold it and me and my dad built a new camp on south pass had it for 3 years sold it and built another one right about 1/3 of a mile up the pass from it so west of it and I have had more than my share of sun blisters and burns and what kills me is the people who think just because the sun isn’t out and it’s cloudy that they are alright and don’t have to worry about it then they end up not being able walk or move for 3 or 4 days because they so burnt and or blistered !! Also I almost got on the Floro bandwagon but the first thing I used it for was white perch and with 4# and 6# pound line see what was really going on and I use PE for the most part to mono with a FG for everything but small fishing I use mono and have never had any problems where floro user’s seam to always be fighting with something a lil nick in the line knots that aren’t just perfect and so on and on so I think I did the best thing I could have ever dun to stay as they put it now days old school 👍👍😎😎😎😎

On west coast it doesn’t really matter, for me at least and my friends. I do little experiments w different lures all the time when the bite is one and the fish just keep hitting. Tides, feeding habits, weather is what matters I guess. It’s like surfing, if you surf the same spot every day forever you’ll have good days for sure, but the conditions don’t always line up to turn it on. Same applies to fishing, wind shelter, tide pull- the only variable that differs is instead of swell you pay attention to what the fish having been doing and that’s just something for both hobbies you have to be on the water actually putting in time to see it for yourself and make mental notes on patterns you see

When picking a leader, yes abrasion resistance is an important factor, but what about visibility? We’ve all been sold on the idea that fluorocarbon “disappears” underwater. Do you have any testing to prove or disprove that idea? I would love to see any results you may have because if I can spend less money on mono leader that would be great.

The fact that fluoro doesn't disappear in water can be seen in this experiment: www.saltstrong.com/articles/fluorocarbon-monofilament-sink-float-test/

If there was "truth in advertising" for the fishing biz "Gulp" would be called "Gag". After a day of fishing with it, you come home smelling like you just got off at the morgue. The test results for Flouro versus Mono are all well and good for abrasion and knot strength, but what about visibility? Isn't that the reason for for using Flouro in the first place? Does it make a difference or not?

To be honest though, depending on where in the world you live, lures can be pretty expensive. In S.A. for example simple soft plastics sets you back ZAR80 - 200 a piece (USD 4 - 10)!! Let's not even think Rapala!!! Crank baits prices ZAR 200 - 800 (USD 10 to 40)!! Live bait is just so easy to catch and way way way cheaper. If for example (nudge nudge wink wink) Salt Strong start to export cool stuff then HELL YES I will stick with lures.
