Every fly caster seems to want to cast the longest possible cast. Whether it is actually to catch a fish or to impress your friends at the barbecue, the desire to cast the whole line or deep into the backing is something that many people ask about. Now, I don’t think that you have to be able to cast far to land lots of fish, but if you practice your distance casting and can have control of your fly line, it will drastically help your line control at shorter distances.
Back in 1998, I won the Best of the West casting competition, casting a standard 5wt fly rod 131 feet. In this episode we go over some secrets and tricks that I use to cast this far. You may notice that much of distance casting isn’t all casting technique but also line preparation. Soon I hope to make a full video going through the casting motions, but if you have any questions right now, shoot me a text 305-930-7346

I came across this video on accident. I am not an angler. Have not picked up a pole in decades. However, this man"s voice, articllation, knowledge, authority, and patience, made me stop what is was doing and listen to the very end.

It is extremely useful in covering water in blind casting. And delivering casts 100’ or more allows an angler to show the fly over more water. There is no disadvantage here, and 90% of how we fly cast here in the Northeast. But I used to do this all the time Tarpon fishing in SW Florida too casting baitfish flies going back to the 1990’s.

I think learning to carry more than you need is the best way to improve your distance casting. It also depends on the line. For example, the SA MED5 needs around an 86’ carry depending on the length of the haul and how much line you pull away from the target etc. This gives you enough overhang to ensure the head is at the top of the loop, all aimed at the target. Learning to hold, let’s say 90’, means that the 86’ carry feels much easier, and as such, will be in better control. Back shooting on the final back cast only gives you one chance to get it right, and if the line is longer than manageable, you can’t pull it back to have another go. You have to cast it, quite risky in comp when you are timed.

I JUST LEARNED TO DOUBLE HAUL ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO. I CAN CONSISTENTLY CAST 50 TO 60 FEET, MY BEST HAS BEEN 81 FEET. THIS WAS A VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEO. SO GOOD THAT I WILL LISTEN TO IT AGAIN. THE BACK CAST LINE SHOOT IS SOMETHING I REALLY NEED TO WORK ON. THANKS.

I was out fishing last week and this fly fisher was and sending line 90-100 feet in 5 strokes to get to a hard to reach place right along the reeds from a dock. The only other way to get the line there was from a boat he didn't want to buy. Now I see how he did it. Huge thanks!

Hi Saltwater Experience ... Great movie. Tommy, Denmark here! That’s a super good explanation that I’m going to train. I fish mostly sea trout from wade fishing on the Danish coast. And uses WF liner with short heads, 8.5 to 12 m / 25-36 ft. Ex. Arctic Silver Compact and Guideline Coastal or RIO - Premier Coastal Seatrout Slickcast - S1. And these lines with short lumps are hard to keep in the air with a lot of line out. But they shoot well. I reach approx. an average castlength without your trick of 25-28 m around 80 to 85 ft .. so I look forward to practicing your tricks of laying line out in the last back cast. My question is, can I get you to mention which line and type, that you would prefer to apply to a Sector #6 ...? weight and class? I've also looked a little on a Cortland Compact, but it's a bit same-same. But I'm going to try it next time. Thanks in advance, Tommy

Nice video. Fly casting however is not like shooting an arrow off a bow. That is unless you perform the bow and arrow cast (which is very ineffective for distance). We rotate the rod to create the desired speed. And we can only store (load) small energy in the rod. If you are interested in further understanding what happens in fly casting, I may link you a good article about it. Regards Bernd

It’s a must because learning to cast for distance creates good casting technique and habits - learning to haul (length of haul and timing), keeping the cast in plane for efficient transfer of energy, creating the types of loop you want (tight or otherwise) for your conditions and needs, and learning to manipulate your line. Learning to cast for distance forces you to learn and hone good casting skills and techniques that will translate to fishing situations, distance and accuracy.

Hi Tom Great explanation video! Something you repeatedly mentioned was the need of a bullet point loop. What is the technique to consistently produce needle point ultra sharp loops..? No matter the distance? L Thanks for your advice! Also what are the best months to book a baby tarpon trip? From when to when?? Thanks, Jim

Line speed. It is very hard to produce that type of loop shape with slow line speed. The double haul is crucial and casting like an athlete rather than as if you have a book under your arm like they used to teach

I used to be able to toss out all of my line and banking even down to 2 weight rods. But I never could toss a 12 weight that far because it was just too heavy for me to generate enough line speed to shoot it that far. However I never did own a 12 weight I would just borrow one from a shop when I was going to Central America to go tarpon fishing. So I never owned one that I could practice all the time, but I did always borrow one in time enough before I went to Central America that I would practice for a while just to get the hand-eye coordination to know when I could pick up off the water to be able to double haul once or twice and shoot it back out there. As you know, you often times need to pick up and recast pretty quickly as your window is rarely open but for a very short window. I bet if Iknew what you just taught us. I would have been able to do it.

First thing they wanna do is cast it as far as they can-absolutely correct! That's me at the beginning. 🤣😅 And that's not a bad thing-to cast far first you need to learn to cast at all. I don't have a problem casting 90+ but 130+...nah, cant do that.

I really want to learn how to cast 110-120ft with my 5wt. I cannot get past the 80ft barrier. I can aerialize 60-70ft but not much line shoots out beyond that. The strange thing is that my backcast is much better than my forward cast and I can shoot line on my backcast too. I need to practice more and I have been doing so recently but it’s going to take a lot of training. Thanks for the tips.

I've heard a few people advise against practicing on the grass. Why is that ? Is it damaging to the line or what ?
@tomrowlandtv
@tomrowlandtv Жыл бұрын
It’s not good for the line but in my opinion that is the cost of getting better. I understand that practicing over water may be better but I would never advise not practicing. I practice indoors. I practice with the pen at the bank with the bead chain. I practice when I am sleeping and dreaming. Always practice.
