Sam, it looks like you are the Sam that we know from our trips to Foley, Alabama. Good to see you out and about and doing good things for others. Nan and I made it down to Columbus, Mississippi on our sailboat before we had to give up our Loop trip (health issues). Let us know what you’re doing now. We’re in our RV in Yuma, AZ for the time being but will be back to the boat in May. Hope to see you then and, perhaps, meet Captain Tinsley. Blessings, Bruce

Pretty cool fix Tinsley, good to know. I'd flip that screen though so those weep holes will drain any water that gets into the screen when the window's closed.

Silicone grease is what is needed. Never vaseline. That will degrade the rubber. However you can use the vaseline on battery terminals to help from corroding

Now wasn't That a simple but great fix!? Makes lots of sense to just keep that rubber gasket pliable at all times. It's always something! Hope all is good for you Tinsley and that work is allowing you time and $ to keep sailing as much as you can!

Use silicone grease if you are going to continue to do this. That's what lube is used for rubber o-rings because it does not have any effect on the rubber.

Why use petroleum? Doesn’t it cause expansion? I thought you use silicone products on rubber. Vaseline would degrade rubber right?

Bees wax also works.

Seeing that water has penetrated the two layers of glass, your seal of the glass to the stainless steel frames has also failed. This joint is also leaking and therefore you will still have leaks. You’d have to remove the glass by separating the two frames. This is a significant amount of work so, while you’re at it you should replace the glass as well. For the minimal price of the actual gasket material I’d buy new.

The correct gasket has a flat side and a rounded side. The previous owner of my boat put the gaskets in sideways and they didn't seal as well. They are actually 3/8" x 7/16". Here's a how to video from Marine Depot Direct. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5LPn2mcediNpc0

Vaseline is a poor choice. It’s petroleum based and eventually it will deteriorate the rubber gaskets. Silicone grease is a better choice.

I agree silicone grease is the proper lube, but I think this is just a temp fix so she does not have to use the bowls.
