Before facing Sanchez, Lopez had defended his championship eight times, in the process becoming one of the most popular boxers in America, his bouts featured regularly on live television. Everyone expected “Little Red” to notch successful defense number nine against the unknown Mexican, the contest Saturday afternoon fare on the CBS network.
But it didn’t work out that way. Little did anyone know, but the 21-year-old Salvador Sanchez was not just another contender. A gifted counter-puncher, Sanchez had patience and maturity beyond his years, along with quick hands and a rock-solid chin.
In round 13, the referee decided Lopez had to be saved from his own courage. After two clean rights staggered the champion yet again, he stepped between the fighters, halting the contest and raising the hand of Sanchez. One distinguished title reign ended and another began. Sanchez would go on to rule the featherweights with an extraordinary run, ten title defenses in fewer than 18 months, that included a rematch win over Lopez and victories against such formidable battlers as Ruben Castillo, Juan Laporte, Wilfredo Gomez and Azumah Nelson.
Killed in a car accident in 1982, the title he took from Lopez was his until the day he died. Suffice to say, his reign lived up to its auspicious beginning. boxrec.com

Yo creo q Nunca se imaginó el coloradito que un muchacho de 20 años le fuera a arrebatar el título y con esa contundencia y cátedra de boxeo en toda la extensión de la palabra, el gran Sánchez nunca abrió la boca aún en el round 13 se le veía fresco como la lechuga, parecía q el novato era el coloradito que aún así dio una gran pelea aguantó mucho golpe y dio lo q tenía q dar pero no le alcanzo para ganarle al gran campeón mexicano fuera de serie y para mi gusto el mejor mexicano de todos los tiempos

Met Salvador Sanchez a few months before he died. He was shopping at Paragon Sporting Goods New York. I was a salesman there at the time. He autographed a copy of Boxing Illustrated for me. Nice guy! One of the greatest fighters I had ever seen. He had great defense and was very sound technically. Great boxer/puncher!

You can see why Sanchez is remembered as one of the greats. He was so fundamentally sound- footwork, balance, conditioning, skilled combinations, hand speed, range, punch resistance when needed, and ring intelligence of an uncommon order. And every punch seemed to land with impact. He had it all.

Gimpes tan rapidos que no puedes ver, tan fuertes que te aturden, un movimiento de cadera y cabeza que te hace fallar 3 de cada 4 golpes y los que parecen que conectaste no le hacen tanto daño, un trabajo de pies que hace que desaparesca y aparezca en otro angulo en un segundo. Y cardio para aguantarte toda la pelea con el mismo plan, con mentalidad tranquila y estrategica. El boxeador perfecto. Es hermoso solo verlo.

Cada vez que veo un video de sal sanchez simplemente quedo sin palabras, que peleador, era casi perfecto, a mi manera de analizar el boxeo, la mejor derecha que he visto, era de cirujano, era un artesano, les hacia un traje a la medida a cada rival, eres el mas grande salvador..... nadie se te acerca, ni chavez....

El Colorado era un gran boxeador, valiente, con mucho aguante y buena pegada, pero Salvador Sánchez era otro nivel, nunca habrá nadie como él y eso que solo tenía 23 años cuando murió.
