I really should have said in the video the first thing we did was plug it in and read the codes and run some live dater on crank it’s got good fuel pressure. 👍

Are you getting an engine speed signal from the crank sensor? Also check cam position sensor too. These engines will run without the cam sensor but it can cause them to run badly. No signal from the crank position sensor and you’ll see no rpm on the diag when cranking. Not that I’m telling you guys how to suck eggs! 🐣
@Roverturbo3 жыл бұрын
What scanner did you use rob? Because if your using a cheap £60 eBay special it won’t read all the ecus and you’ll only be getting half the picture. All those messages on the dash, you must of had loads of codes in every ecu, especially with a flat battery. I would highly recommend a autel mk808 or similar, for around £300 it will read all ecus in most cars out the box and also do some coding, like oil reset, EPB reset, steering angle sensor coding etc. 👍

A noid light isn’t the best way to test a high pressure diesel injector for switching , the ECU will kill the switching to the injector as soon as it detects the resistance doesn’t seem right , noid lights aren’t close to being the same resistance as a high pressure diesel injector . I’d be starting with a code read , clear them then see which codes reappear once it’s cranking. Any low fuel rail pressure faults & it’d be worth checking injector leak back and compare all 4 👍

I've had one of these for a few years (sportive on a 15 plate) mine kept coming up check injection system, the garage I had it serviced at scanned it and it came up with a list, the mechanic told me that it had to be an ecu fault and he would need to send it off to be tested and he'd had the same problem with a Renault traffic (same van) I couldn't go without a van so bit the bullit and went to the main stealer I got a phone call 2 hours later saying its the air temp/pressure sensor £130inc been fine ever since the master tech at vauxhall told me the check injection system message is a generic message that displays due to a multitude of issues, love the channel can't wait to see you fix this one 👍

Those vans won’t run without the intercooler connected same as the older 2.0 M9r engined ones won’t, basically the 1.6 is a smaller version of an m9r but with a few different ancillaries, try it with the cooler connected up. It’s not an immo issue. They won’t allow a start attempt and the immo light be on the dash if it was. Honestly best bet is get a code reader on it and see what comes up, need to check fuel pressure on live data or could use a multimeter into fuel pressure sensor if need be. If fuel pressure is ok suspect the chain may have jumped, if you un plug the cam sensor and it runs then that confirms it. But if timing is properly out it won’t run anyway but may still sound ok. Usually if that’s happened you get away with a chain kit, just a couple of ideas for yous. Good luck

Hi mate vauxhall tech here. With the stop /start fault i wouldn't get invested into it. When there is a fault with these vivaros the ecu sets up a default fault regarding the stop/start making the stop/start not work. We had one these in the workshop not so long ago with similar fault turns on, rev it and it will cut out. On our one it was the dual mass flywheel. With the dual mass flywheel on these they have a main pick up point for the crankshaft position sensor to let It know tdc for cylinder 1 . Our dual mass flywheel had jumped or moved due to the internal springs being faulty and because of this the crankshaft position sensor was not picking up tdc in the correct position causing this fault.

The black box behind the battery is supposed to have all the sockets on the bottom in use.Also by the small fuse on the left there is a small socket that takes a plug which may only have one wire going to it, probably red. That wire goes through to the under bonnet fuse box. Check it for continuity, it can get corroded and break, and will bring up the check stop start message.
@ianmaciver40043 жыл бұрын
Im not going to take wild guesses as Im a fulltime mechanic doing this kind of stuff everday. Firstly make sure you have the correct battery fully charged then put the front end back on with all pipes and sensors connected. take a very close look at the wiring plug going onto the airflow sensor bad for the outer wires on the plug breaking and causes starting problems. If still no joy go to the fuse box at the n/s inner wing unclip all the relays and fuse blocks and check every single wire pulling at them as they come out of the connector blocks, there known for broken wiring there but can take ages to find.

Hi Rob. Great vlog as usual. I did a short stint with Nissan a couple of years back and i recall a nissan primastar (same van)taxi with this 1.6 engine giving a very similar issue with similar symptoms....i.e multiple warning lights and fault codes. It shut down as the owner was sitting in an airport drop off point waiting for passengers as it was idling. After much diagnistics, it turned out that the timing chain had skipped a couple of teeth. Once the ecu had established a run cycle with crank/cam sensor offset values out of spec, it shut down the injector driver. It sounds very like the issue you're having. These engines , im told are prone to chain issues. This is just my experience with them.

@mikeberry3043 жыл бұрын
Loads of those faults will be related to wiring disconnected on stripdown Rob , check for rpm signal on any scan tool , should show it on live data , stop start could be anything from incorrect battery type , if only a normal battery , make sure clutch switch and brake light switch working , I had one of these in bits 2 weeks ago to change radiator hoses , clips and screws everywhere back to basics first for checking faults 👍👍, rpm signal needed deffo 👍
@oldschool19933 жыл бұрын
My first guess is the stop-start system- maybe a faulty switch on the clutch pedal or on the gearbox neutral switch- something telling the ECU that the van has come to a stop and is shutting off the run relay. You can buy those relay bypass units really cheap on Ebay. Second thought is in the ignition- are you sure the key is the original one for the van- most cars have a code in the key fob that sends a coded signal to the ignition node and if the signal does not match the code in the ECU, the engine will start and then immediately stop.

rob, i hate to tell you this....again... but better me than the rozzers. YES, if it was a car at that weight, the combined weight of 3500kg would be legal, but here is where the law gets interseting.... if its a COMMERCIAL vehicle on the back, it goes by its gross weight, whether its empty or full, in this case, that looks like a 2700 vivaro... so 2700kg is what the old-bill would class it at, cause they aint allowed to look inside to see if its empty or full without a warrant, so in this case, it would be 2700kg plus your recovery truck, and i absolutely guarantee, if you got the wrong cop in a bad mood, he would 100% have your license off you for being stopped with this. i worked in the recovery industry for years, i know my stuff. just trying to save your livelyhood, big fan no hate.

I do think you could be on to something with stop start system. In my opinion it might be time to hook it up to a scan tool, clear all the codes. Then try and keep it running with brake cleaner, and see what codes come back. At least that will then give you a clearer data set to work with. But I do remember when I worked at a company taking a insignia to a local vauxhall dealer because It had a fault with the stop start . You couldn't turn the stop start off. fords allow you to do that , with the insignia when you stopped at traffic lights it was like trying to start a old ford from a cold 🤣. So I reckon the stop start has failed altogether.

@1chish3 жыл бұрын
Any 'Stop / Start' system only stops the engine with clutch out. All will have a check to see if its in gear or in motion. Its worth holding the clutch in, then start it and see if it keeps running. If it does you have a clearer path (clutch pedal switch etc). Its worth checking to see if 'Stop / Start' can be switched off. VW ones can for example. I would also clear all the faults as many of those faults are triggered by other fault codes. Start with a clean sheet (literally!). Looks like another winner for you guys...
@richardjones52553 жыл бұрын
You keep your cool when you are banging your head against challenge after challenge. Modern vehicles have so many sensors and controllers plus their essential wiring. The fault could be as simple as a frayed or corroded wire or a misleading component failing. Sadly, the computer read-out does not always give great guidance. One thing is certain, fault-finding by component changing did not work for the previous owner. This one will take inspiration or logical hard work, the things that you two thrive on.

Couple of things with stop start systems, they have a switch on the clutch pedal. When the engine has stopped, pressing the clutch to engage gear triggers an engine restart. A duff switch will not allow the engine to run. And I think on some systems there is another switch or extra wired contact on the brake pedal which sends a signal as well. Also possible ignition switch fault? The more I watch, the more I think modern Vauxhall diesels are very very unreliable. Designed by a committee lol.

Had a simular problem with a traffic when I worked at Renault. Took ages to work out the fault with the Renault main techs. Changed the battery and it cleared the fault. Maybe the same with a vauxhall? Same underneath ain't they

Check that the injectors are programmed in the correct sequence also they have a switch somwere along putting it into first gear to start it I don't know if the switch is going to be in the gearbox gear linkage or gear selector but when you find it you can use that as a reference point to find the fault

Hi Chris and Rob as a auto electrician myself I'll be totally honest with you, I'm very surprised your playing guessing games without plugging it in to see live data and doing it old school, you can't with modern vehicles. With diagnostic plugged into the van, you can check everything you was talking about viewing live data. Even check immobiliser data. fuel pressure, crank sensor, pedel switches, all sensors and tons more. Clear all current codes and see what comes back. With all the errors it's looking like a ECU error or Live feed missing. You need to invest into a decent diagnostic machine, I'd recommend AUTEL MAXI SYS MS908 or better. it will be the best investment you have ever made for jobs like this.

Absolutely, I have a Tech 2 for my Saabs, an SDD for the Jags and a Launch for everything else. It has saved me hours and makes life a lot less stressful.

It was the first thing we did as you know it’s a lot of reading and going deep in to it so recording it wasn’t a option 👍

@@stewartcraigie5047 we had it plugged in first 👍

I only assumed you was stabbing in the dark because at one point in the video there was chris looking into a crank sensor? When you can rule that out on diagnostics. I do appreciate you guys are more body repair etc. When your start getting into diagnostic and wiring, it takes years to learn and never stop learning. Might be an idea to scope the communication wires see if all looks normal, you really should have recorded the diagnostic as well, not only would it have been interesting for the large majority it will also help us to maybe see with live data what the issue is but you need a decent machine:-)

I thought the same thing, if someone has gone to the effort of fitting injectors surely they would of checked the basics 1st like fuel, but you never know

Hi Guys - Great video - I have heard of problems like this caused by the switch on the clutch/brake because its involved in the Stop/Start procedure - Good luck - You'll solve it - Clay

I had one of those for work for many years, when the battery was disconnected or went flat there would be warnings appear, mines said check hill start, check abs, road mode normal etc, mines didn’t have stop start. After it was running for around 15 mins the warnings disappeared on their own.

Disconnect the MAP sensor and MAF then try that but make sure sure boost pipe is on from the intercooler to inlet manifold and disconnect the intercooler pipe at the turbo end, I've no idea why it won't start without the intercooler pipe on the inlet manifold but my one didn't, these engines suffer with turbos seizing up/ snapping the shaft and doing exactly this. I had one lead me round the block for a few days before I found it, if it doesn't run that way, I'd still pop the intake tube off the turbo and check it, its a pig of a job but definitely worth checking with it having exhaust back pressure sensors etc. My one was full of oil on the intake side bit the exhaust side had snapped clean off and stuck itself sideways
