Had same fault ( crankshaft end float) with low mileage 1.4 Mokka. Vauxhall dealership quoted £7,000 to replace engine after trying a set of shells. Low miles, full Vauxhall service history, customer had car just over a year : no warranty or contribution. I bought accident damaged Mokka from Copart & swapped engine, had customer back on road for under £3,000. Common fault on 1.4 Vauxhalls.

From what I have discovered on KZbin is in fact the end float on the crankshaft when operating the clutch is in fact the thrust bearings need replacing. So now with all in situ, drop the sump and replace them. Years ago my big ends went, so drained the sump. Laid on my back under the car removed the sump, dropped the crank, and fitted oversized bearings. Put it all back together and drove it it for many miles. Hillman Minx 1968..

Have you considered that whoever did the bottom end work on it, didn't put the crank thrush washers back in? Or, alternatively park it up and wait for a Cat B to come up at Co-part to pinch the engine from.

No no, this is a well known problem, go to any vauxhall forum and they will tell you to stay clear of the 1.4T due to endfloat problems and also LSPI...I dont remember if it's not the LSPI that creates the endfloat problem actually.

Crank thrust bearing wear is a known issue on those Rob. Have you guys checked the excess end float on the crank, and what's the rest of the engine condition like ? I wouldn't just assume some engine work has been done because of the new sealant. It may have been a quick check once the clutch wasn't found to be the cause, and they've replaced the friction plate as a matter of course. The owner may have decided they'd spent enough already, especially as most of the job would be a repeat of the parts stripdown already done, again. Depending on its potential resale value, and how much you're in to it already, you could just be looking at a new oversized main bearing set to fix it, possibly a crank dress / grind and big ends too. If it's a genuine mileage car, then it should be worth spending a bit, but maybe not to the extent of an engine swap.

How is oversize main bearings going to fix end float
@brianwhittington5086
@brianwhittington5086 11 ай бұрын
@@garyevans9509 Depending on the design, many engines have just a centre main bearing with shoulders, that are the thrust bearing face. They have different thickness of white metal coating. It may , or may not need a crank grind to get bearings with the right combination of diameter, and thrust face thickness. Whoever stripped it down after the clutch was found to be OK, may not have even taken a main cap off. They may have not wanted the hassle and frightened the customer that it needed an engine rebuild. The guys could get out of it with the simplicity of a new main set, depending what's there regarding wear. It's the sort of car that attracts abuse of the clutch on full bore standing starts, so putting excess wear on the fore/ aft thrust on the crankshaft.

Crank walk is the thrust bearing failed. It's not a dead engine. It probably wasn't aligned properly OR it has been abused by the driver riding the clutch. The garage obviously changed the clutch and the problem was still there so they opened the sump and found the thrust bearing has failed. Rather than removing the crankshaft or being honest with the customer, to keep the money from the job they packed it up and sent it down the road. A bit of a shitty move by the garage.

As far as I recall that was a feature on the F12, F14 and F16 gearboxes and likely many others where 80s and 90s Vauxhalls were concerned. Fitted a high compression Astra 1.4 Family 0 to my ex's Nova in the early 2000s and in my haste to get the car back in one piece I actually forgot to fit the throwout bearing (I'd hired a lovely big engine hoist from HSS and it was due back in the morning and already back in bits in the back of my 16v Maestro). Thank Christ the CR Astra F14 'box fitted had the access panel and the ability to displace the input shaft, clever Vauxhall/Opel!

BMW swapped from 2 main thrust bearings to 1 in the later B petrol engines, these wore out too quickly, caused end float and started breaking the inductive pickup for the crank sensor. The solution was to revert to 2 thrust bearings.... I wonder how much that recall cost compared to doing it right the first time. Same with the F generation steering rack debacle.

Triumph sixes were notorious for crank end float. There was a C shaped thrust washer that often fell into the sump. once this happened if you operated the clutch the crank would move 1/8" forward or even 1/4". This forced the pistons into the sides of the bores and ovality was the side effect ........ a rebore and new pistons the cure. Sometimes the crank land was so worn the crank was scrap as well. I've not known the problem with any other unit.

Often the way with so called light damage cars, people find the cost of a mechanical repair too much so have a light crash to get out of it with the insurance money. Always seems to be the really small damage cars that's just had a bump on the wing in my experience. I've actually got one at the moment, easy body repair, wing and headlight, then found the gearbox is knackered once I drove it. Definitely evident before the crash as it's completely dry and howling it's nuts off.

Sorry to hear it’s bad news chaps. The first time rob put his foot on the clutch and I heard the noise, I thought that would be caused by end float issues. I had one recently with a similar issue but it was leaking oil out the front main oil seal, due to the amount of movement in the crank. Similar engine in mokka and Astra models. Such a shame. Hopefully you find a way to get it sorted and I would be interested to see what you do to it as I haven’t repaired one yet. Keep up the videos chaps! 👍🏼

By the sounds of it you have moved it on now but out of curiosity I searched this reg at work for previous parts supply (motor factors). Although not the depot I work at a clutch and flywheel had been supplied to it. But the clutch had been returned. Doesn’t mean to say it didn’t have one though.

Regardless of the outcome, the communication between Rob and Chris is fantastic. The way they worked together to get that gearbox out was exemplary 👏. Sorry it didn’t work out guys.

not worth whipping the sump off and checking there are some thrust washers fitted?

I loved them old Vauxhall clutches you could change them in half and hour and that included tidying your tools away and popping the kettle on

Gosh not even got 30k and its knackered. My old Focus is on 130k and going strong. I can only assume that it was thrashed out and this is the consequence

A lot of engines use thrustwashers so I would check to make sure they haven't fallen off the crank and into the sump

I wonder if it's had an undeclared knock to the wheel that has sent a shock through the driveshaft into the box and crank.

New subscriber just for your guys positivity not to mention your knowledge, I’d be livid tbh at the realisation that is not gearbox issues but a new engine especially if previous owner had to be aware and not given you full SP but you guys must off seen these type of things many times before.

Stuff like this is so annoying and frustrating. Honesty is a rarer and rarer commodity these days. I'm sure the whole SRUK community here are just as angry as me but, it's always so refreshing that you guys take it on the chin and stay positive. I'm certain that's why you have such success and good outcomes the rest of the time. Move on and keep smiling. :)

Interestingly DVLA tell you not to send stuff recorded! As they don’t sign for each one and it all goes in the same bucket! They literally deliver it all together with one signature for thousands of envelopes! Hope that saves you some money!
