A friend of my parents ordered a brand new Peugeot 405 Mi16x4 back in 1990 and spec'd every single optional extra on it. First drive and it was hit by a BMW and rolled. Because the car was so new they re-shelled it and it was nothing but trouble from then on in. I think everyone regretted the re-shelling, I think you will dodge a bullet by not going down that route! Much as it would be fun to watch!
@steveegginton5352 жыл бұрын
The car was in a shocking state almost urecognisable from some angles! I guess its a testament to the construction of BMW's that the owner walked away from this one particularly the speed he was doing! Seems his wallet was more injured though, looks like he paid 26k for it the end of last year, nine months later its worth 2k!! The body is only fit for the crusher although plenty of parts. Would be great to see you guys do a re-shell but imagine the man hours that would take would tie you both up for ages.

Take in attention crash tests are done at +- 35mph and the damage is massive as the new cars are made to dissipate the energy of the impact around the shell protecting the occupants, now having that in mind imagine if that impact in what looks like an not deformable barrier at 120mph, the steering wheel will be in the boot and the driver will be mash peas

when i was a trainee mechanic around 2000/2001 i went on many breakdown/recoveries as bad as that. often wondered how possible it is to repair, i mean its mostly bolt on parts plus whatever frame treatment it needs assuming engine etc is fine. i know insurance people write em off straight away especially older cars lately. years ago id love to get 2 damaged cars and make 1 run to sell on but i never did it and now im in care work instead of mechanics lol (bit of a profession jump)
@super69542 жыл бұрын
This whole video clearly shows how laid back Chris really is, he wasn't bothered at all, and took it for what it was. That cars exactly why I haven't bought any accident damaged machines recently yeah in theory it's a 6000 plus profit, until you find 10 bits that aren't available used, the dealers /OEM have no stock or those few unexpected bits take all the profit. yeah it would be a good Chanel project if it generated enough revenue from views to cover the extra time involved. Practically though you made the right call dumping it. The only other thing is it highlights a problem not being recorded, somebody who's not honest could re shell that and sell it for huge money. If they didn't say nobody would ever know it's real history, thats just plain nasty if that happens with other cars out there. The checks are totally useless in those cases.. Thanks for the video, take care guys.

Many years ago, when I was a junior doctor I worked in A&E. I always asked what cars people were driving when they had a bad smash and walked away (particularly when people in the other car were seriously injured or killed). More often than not, BMWs which is one of the reason I have had so many of them. Would have been interesting watching you swap everything onto a new body shell, but I’m sure you made the right decision moving it on.

£4000 engine with ECU and keys, gearbox £750, rear subframe and diff £650.....that'll break very quickly to 5-6k. Then send the V5 to DVLA as scrap with a covering letter. Even if you sell to a breaker, I would still write to DVLA saying the car is damaged beyond repair. At £2500, you did very nicely. Good effort!

The worst accident damaged car I ever came across in a "salvage yard" in Lochgelly Fife ,was a vauxhall calibra . Then a brand new model. I had no idea what the car was or even the maker initially untill we saw the engine cylinder head. It had left the road at over 100 mph , demolished a wall and hit a huge tree roof first , sadly the joy riding apprentice mechanic was eviscerated. His remains largely removed had left the black leather seats stained dark brown and his hair and scalp parts were still embedded in the crushed windscreen. The question was and is Is it ethically and morally right to remove any parts useable or not from such a tragic situation . And if you do , and due to invisible stress fatigue in another accident another person is seriously injured. Do you say to yourself well they knew it was a used part and not my problem mate . This side of the salvage industry has always stuck in my craw. So many make cash from the misery and loss of others .

Definitely needs a new shell. I'm only a DIYer, but rebuilt a few Fords and Vauxhalls in the 1980s and 90s with that sort of damage. Although even they took about 120 hours of work, and a modern Batmobile would take longer. As you say, you can spend time more cost effectively on repairing less badly damaged cars. You'd spend ages sourcing bits for a car like this. Glad you're not offering it on Instagram, as it would surely fall into the hands of a tea leaf wanting to ring it.
