I have a 1966 impala sedan that I am building with my girls. My youngest named it the Swampala and we are building it to look like a monster. I have trying to figure out how to do patina and your video has just shown me the plan for our beast. I put down a coat of black, then oxide red, then dark green. Now going to top it off with matte black and sand it back down for a patina look, like it crawled out of a swamp to eat. also the interior is all blood red. Thanks for the awesome content and the ideas. Killer builds. I am now a lifetime Subscriber. Keep up the badass work.

Did a buddies truck like this. Was an old Ford always broke down i did wear spots on rear of bed n tailgate where he was always pushing it and along edge of hood bc it was always opened and closed and under windows and along window frame where ud pull door closed and where your arm would ride when window were down when it was running. He didn't think the rear and hood was funny @ first but grew on him.

I couldn't get to it in time so it smacked a tree. Everyone is fine except the burb. It was the coolest blue patina and I thought I had just forced him into a paint job he didn't want. Now I can use this method to save the look! And I think I'll fix the parking brake too. :)

Normal clear coats aren't urethane based and won't have the added UV protection. It's a bit more durable too. You can definitely add a normal clear but chances are you're going to have to spray a couple more coats than the single coat we were able to do with the Poppy's. Plus you don't get that hydrophobic property unless you end up ceramic coating your basic clear

So I just done this method on my c10. Idk if I did something wrong or what but the rust I created with the mix wiped right off after sitting overnight with a rag over it. Is that normal or do I need to do something else I missed. Thanks!!
@SalvagetoSavage3 ай бұрын
So that rust is just going to be surface oxidation. You're going to want to spray it with clear or if you're doing it a wipe on clear coat, go over it heavy so you don't have any friction to wipe it away. The longer you let it sit, the more it will set in though!
@jimmylawhorn41753 ай бұрын
@@SalvagetoSavage 10-4 thanks buddy! I don’t think I let it sit long enough to really set in good. It was still a bit damp from the mix I sprayed on it and I probably got a little too excited and messed with it too soon. I’ll let it set and cook in longer before messing with it. Thank again man. How long do you leave the patina formula, on bare metal?
@SalvagetoSavage Жыл бұрын
Just until you get the desired amount of oxidation. There's no set time, but there will be a point where you won't see any noticeable difference in rust after 5 or 10 minutes. That's when we usually see that it's been on long enough.

Hey man, I followed all of your steps but when I touch the "rust" it comes off super easy. Is that normal? Should I just not touch it afterwards and get it cleared as fast as possible. I'm doing this on a Japanese truck. Ik that Japanese steel is tough 🤣 wasn't sure if it just wasn't etching into the metal enough or it really wasn't supposed to be embedded in
@SalvagetoSavage10 ай бұрын
It's pretty normal for it to come off easily like that. That concoction just works to promote oxidation of the metal, but it's not really strong enough to dig down into the metal really fast. Etching the metal a bit more might be helpful, but also, if you have the time to wait, giving it a few days to oxidate some more will help it bite into the metal some. If you don't want to wait, throwing some clear on it will help seal it all in though!
@4.8Flatbed10 ай бұрын
@SalvagetoSavage So I actually did this! I used a scotch bright and wet sanded the entire thing down. It definitely scuffed the metal up better. The rust is wayyyyy better binded to thr bare metal than it was. I could take it off with my finger before. Appreciate the response

Why does poppy's patina say its wipe on but yall always spray it on? Is it to avoid runs? You can get the same look with "sweet patinas" wipe on product and its not permanent.
@SalvagetoSavage2 жыл бұрын
Good question, was wondering if anyone would pick up on that. So king story short, you can only use the whip on if it’s the real deal automotive paint that has faded or weathered over time. If you whip on after using spray cans it will smear. As far as the sweet patina I think that’s more of an oil that has to be reapplied. And leaves you a greasy
