Salvage Workshop

Күн бұрын

Check out PART 1 of rescuing this Old Loader HERE:
• Allis Chalmers 645 Whe...
Today the plan is to dive DEEP into the fuel system and see why we aren't getting fuel to the injectors!
We'll completely disassemble the 6 cylinder Stanadyne Injection pump, and see what is going on inside of it! This isn't a rebuild, as much as it's a cleaning and inspection of the pump to see if we can get it running without spending any money on it!
Then I'll give you a quick tour of Salvage Workshop, and you can see where it ALL began! A LOT has changed in the shop!
~
This old loader is a 1965 Allis Chalmers TL645 Wheel Loader with an Allis Chalmers 3500 turbo charged 6 cylinder diesel engine. It has an Allison automatic transmission, and can reach speeds of 21MPH going forward! It is articulated and can make VERY tight turns, making it very nimble in tight places. It weighs about 26000 lbs or so, and it's a PERFECT sized machine for all the random things I do!
Join me on this journey as we work together to figure out what it's going to take to get this machine back up and running once again! This will be a daily account of the process showing a bit more of what is takes to properly bring this old beast back to life and make it usable once again!
This machine should be a LOT of fun!
~
Thanks as always for watching and following along with all my crazy adventures here on Salvage Workshop, I TRULY appreciate it!
Please enjoy! I know I did!

You definitely ain't scared. I've been a diesel mechanic for nearly 30 yrs and wouldn't dream of tackling an injection pump rebuild. Typically I don't have to cause fuel supply to the injection pump or out of the transfer pump is the problem 99.9999% of the time.

Ya the reassembly of complicated things is often left out... but it's just as, if not MORE important! Cus if you can't get it back together properly, it will NEVER work! Plus, I wanted to document the WHOLE thing in case I needed to watch the video to reassemble it!

I thought you were kidding, but nope - 5:24. I think that in Japan, a job interview includes having to enter a tube full of fasteners and being able to remove them even being upside down. It can be disorienting.

Sometimes its best to tighten an oil filter a 1/8 - 1/4 turn to crush the gasket and break the seal, then remove normally. Contrary plumbing fittings too.

You need the rain just as much as we do in Germany. You can really hear the water falling on the roof. It's just that torrential rains don't do anything. Because then the water cannot seep into the ground. On the other hand, it brings a cooling when working on the mas'chine. So wonderful refreshment.

Nice job on the pump, and hope it pays off with a running motor, for just investing time. Hopefully those 2 umbrella seals went in right if the back one rolls forward it will let diesel run out of the pump and fill the timing case/ oil pan with fuel. There has been many motors destroyed when guys didn't Know they leaked and the oil was thinned way down. There is a proper tool to install them so they don't, Check it a few times when you get it running. As Hank over at Hamilton would say make sure it's not "Making oil" . I'd bet that blue fuel filters an AC Delco, not AC as in Allis Chalmers . Thanks for another interesting video, Take care.
@notajp
@notajp 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve used a thin piece of plastic wrapped around the seal to hold it in the “closed” position during installation.

Don’t forget to squirt a liberal amount of ATF in the fuel inlet on that vane pump. That’s your mechanical fuel transfer pump that pulls fuel from the tank, through the filter(s) and into the injection pump. The ATF is to prime the vane pump with some sort of oil so it pulls a vacuum on the fuel suction line from the tank, which it won’t do if the vanes are left cleaned and dry.
@SalvageWorkshop
@SalvageWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
So the Injection pump IS the fuel pump? I wondered... I have the machine running beautifully now, but thought that someone deleted a mechanical or electric pump like they did the water separator.
@ralfie8801
@ralfie8801 2 жыл бұрын
@@SalvageWorkshop That is correct, it’s two pumps in one. Not knowing what the actual pressures are, just look at it as the vane pump is the low pressure side and that cage with all the plungers and check balls is the high pressure side.

ahhh, the soothing squeal of a bone-dry fuel filter gasket. Several companies make 3-legged claw that fits on a 1/2" drive. Use one from Matco every day and it's a great tool to have. Only ran me about $35 too. Major life saver for stuck filters.

One minor thing, the wrench size you use to remove a hex bolt is not the same size as the bolt size. So you mentioned a “9/16” bolt”, that really is a 3/8” bolt.
@SalvageWorkshop
@SalvageWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Ya I see where you're coming from, but its a reference to the wrench I needed to remove it... Size of the bolt doesn't matter when removing them and reinstalling them, only the size of the wrench you need matters for that!
