If you wonder about the very nerdy sweater vest Jimmy is wearing……His mom made it for him for his birthday, and this concert was ON his 26th birthday, and family and friends were there, so he wore it for his “mum”. What a good kid! 😁. Doesn’t go with a rock performance though, I gotta say. He never wore anything remotely like it again either.

This song is a reworking of a song by Sonny Boy Williamson, written by Willie Dixon. Certainly do listen to the studio track also. I wish you'd give a reaction on the studio version because I'd like to see what you thought the differences were, if you like one better or equally but for different reasons. Some history on the 3rd album; as I said, the 2nd album was recorded while on tour so they were all exhausted when it was finished. To relax, Robert and Jimmy took their wife/girlfriend to a cottage in Wales called Bron Yr-Aur (pronounced kind of like "brawn rawr" it means "golden breast" or "golden hill" in Welsh, due to the cottage being in a valley surrounded by hills). The place had no electricity or running water so they brought acoustic guitars and a tape recorder and began work on the 3rd album. The surroundings inspired a more folk music feel which is reflected in the album overall. Critics (and some fans) hated it, complaining Zep had gone soft. However, the problem was, critics didn't like the first 2 albums either, so...critics suck lol Glad you're enjoying the journey.

Salvo, the band was largely against the release of singles (and never did release one in the UK) but there were a few released in the US (at the insistence of Atlantic Records). One of them was the "Immigrant Song" (the first track on Led Zeppelin III). The B side of this 45 is the song "HEY, HEY WHAT CAN I DO" also recorded in 1970 but did not appear on the album release, I strongly suggest you add this song in while doing Led Zeppelin III as it was not included with any album until much later in 1990 with the release of "Led Zeppelin Boxed Set" and again with the CD release of "Coda" in 1993 but it did NOT appear on the original release of this album (this original release of this album was in 1982 after the death of John Bonham to honor contractual commitments to Atlantic Records and is a collection of tracks spanning the length of Zeppelin's twelve-year history) but "Hey Hey What Can I Do" had radio play back in 1970 so your followers who were listening then know it well and it's a track you should hear (Page and Plant did include it in live sets during the 1990's).

Jimmy with his soon to be stolen “black beauty” guitar. He got it back decades later though. That’s a helluva story in itself. At least they brought it on home. Awesome tune to close out an epic album. This album supplanted the Beatles Abbey Road to close out the 60’s at the top of the charts.

Salvo was having a hard time early on appreciating songs like "Stairway", so I think to grasp how great songs like it really are if he does studio first and then picks a live version of the studio version he has struggled with he will get the true scope of what they really can do, for example, when he listens to "Stairway" again on IV, if he follows it up with "Stairway" from "The Song Remains The Same" concert at MSG he'll change his mind about that track, your thoughts? This is not to disagree with you that their live performances are what most of us want to see knowing that the same songs in live performances will change from show to show... so glad I was in the audience at several MSG shows! Also have a struggle with those who think Robert's voice isn't good in later recordings, with age all voices change but that doesn't diminish Robert as being one of the greatest then and now, I will point to the Celebration Day concert in 2012 as a backup to my opinion!

@betseyr.90812 жыл бұрын
Salvo, your objective was to go album by album, you really haven't done this here by not reacting to the track on the album, live recordings were very different at times from studio tracks, this isn't exactly what was heard on Led Zeppelin II when it was released. In the future you should do your first time reaction to the studio release and then return in a future reaction for the live recording, otherwise you will have no reference point for what you hear in the live performance and not all nuances achieved in a studio track were possible to replicate live (very apparent in vocals as Robert emerged as the only vocalist in the band rather quickly and he couldn't sing overlaid vocals live and therefore you could miss out on some remarkable harmonizing Robert did with himself). The same in reverse, if you first reacted to the live then you need to go back to the studio release, specially for "Stairway", it isn't the same as you have already heard.
@johnpetrie19182 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer this to the album version, as Plant's vocals at the beginning & end of the album cut are a bit problematic. There's an offensive term for what he's doing that I won't repeat, but suffice to say it crosses the line from blues style to offensive stereotype. Here it's toned down.

@@SalvoG After finishing my comment, I had to come back to the top and apologize in advance for it's length, but here I go. lol Someone is splitting hairs. You covered the live version of the last two songs from the 2nd album, thus you didn't finish covering the actual album. Not sure why that would get someone so twisted, but there you have it. ;) For me, I say go with the studio version first, then live of anything you really like if you can find a decent video. Watching them perform live is always a gas (although like all bands, they had a few live performances that weren't their best) but it wasn't always easy for them to replicate live what they recorded, mostly because of the layering in of instrumentation and vocals, so that's why listening to studio versions is important. As it happens, I like the live version of this song better than the studio version because I didn't care for Plant's vocals on the studio version at the beginning and end of the song, keeping in mind that albums 1 and 2 were recorded pretty much back to back and at the very start of their career so they were doing a lot of experimentation with their sound. Besides, that entire concert was just fire! If you did studio versions of songs back to back with live versions, it would be a longer reaction but one I think people would hang in with and enjoy. Zeppers will listen to them all day long (lol), and it gives newbies a fuller picture of what LZ was all about. But that takes up more of your time, especially when they improvise during live performances, although you certainly wouldn't have to do that for every single song, just now and again. Or, you could intersperse reactions to songs on their albums with a separate reaction to a live version, even it it's a song you've already covered from an album. I've seen people react to an entire concert in one go. Nothing is written in stone how to go about this. You can do as you like. In the end, keeping your reactions real is what will keep followers the happiest. Anyway, I'm really enjoying traveling with you through your LZ journey. Have a great day, Salvo, and don't let naysayers get to you. Not possible to keep 100% of the people happy 100% of the time, eh?

I can’t put too much energy into this post because soon I have 4 videos I have to record, edit, and upload but I’ll say this. I really hope the band wouldn’t consider suing me for claiming this was my first time hearing this song, even though it’s the live and not studio version. I can go back and listen to both studio versions in one go if I must. I’m just trying to have a pleasant experience listening to this legendary band, I don’t want it to feel like homework. You’re free to scrutinize, that is completely fine. I’ll stick to studio versions first, had no idea it would cause this type of reaction. Apologies.
