This song was played A LOT when it came out, in Sweden fpr sure. Loved the effect, sounds cool and fun. And Cher doesn't NEED autotune, she has real pipes and can sing, It"s just an effect. +They don't hide it. All that makes it 👍💥

Your assessment of auto-tune as an effect is spot-on. They weren't hiding it to put her voice on-key (her pitch has always been perfect). They used it as a kind of sound effect, as you say.
@hatleyhoward71937 ай бұрын
Excellent comment. Came here to say that when you are a strong singer like Cher, autotune is for effects only. The fact is, you could strip this down to just vocals and she would be pitch perfect and still be able to sell it as a hit.

The difference with Cher using AutoTune, as to say, Britney Spears, is that everyone already knew Cher could belt out some notes. She was using the new technology more as an added effect, not to reach notes that she couldn't naturally attain.

Many people do not realize the beginning of the song includes a sample from Electric Light Orchestra's (ELO) 1981 album, Time. The last 7 seconds of the final track on that album, 'Epilogue' is heard, which is the wind sounds and rising piano chords heard leading into the drum beat kicking in on 'Believe.'

The use of autotune or pitch correction or whatever they used in this song was to create a specific vocal effect. It's used sparingly. In no way is it used to try and disguise a sub par vocal performance.

They used AutuTune on this album because it was new and it was the first time it was used, so it was a novelty that worked. Nowadays it's overused and abused, as most all record companies insist that Autotune and Pitch Correction be used on so many modern artists who frankly, can't sing very well, and without these effects and corrections, would never have been able to get a record sold before 1998. Frankly, you don't even have to be able to sing anymore to songs on the charts. On records I guess it's fine, but if you were around before Autotune and enjoy going to live concerts to hear people sing, it's refreshing to hear voices that can sing in front of a live band and SING without lip-syncing. There is a big difference between a "recording artist" and a "Vocalist/Singer."

For the 41st Annual Kennedy Center Honors, Adam Lambert sang this song to Cher... and brought the house down with a melancholy version that had her crying and blowing him kisses. It's the best version, IMHO. (And no, Cher doesn't need autotune... it just happened to be a new effect the producers wanted to use).
@paintedbird7 ай бұрын
I agree with you about the use of auto tune on this. Obviously, Cher does not 'need' auto tune to sound good. It was being used as an effect on her voice which helped contribute to the over all sound of the song and production. This really was most peoples first time hearing that kind of effect, which is why it became known as "the Cher effect" for quite a while. Cher has a great voice and she is a pretty cool artist. She has a lot of good songs from all throughout her career.
@killatella906 ай бұрын
This is Autotune done right! Unlike most Autotuned singles featuring artists who actually needed it to cover their vocal failings, Cher can actually sing and used it more to tap into the Rave vein that was bumpin at the time.
@davidchapman22136 ай бұрын
The auto-tune use on this album was used for its effect. Not because Cher couldn’t hold a tune. If it were used as a crutch to correct her pitch, the effect on the vocal would have been much less evident. There are many portions of the song with higher ranges and difficulty that aren’t auto-tuned. Cher has never been accused of issues with pitch control, live or otherwise. I remember us talking about how cool the effect sounded and how awesome the song was. The whole album is fantastic. Auto-tune became an issue when studios and producers started using it to hide inadequacies of studio-made artists. It has also been widely used to perfect older music and re-released on compilations or greatest hits albums. Leave good enough alone. They were hits in their own right and for a reason.
