To me it is a happy melody about someone suffering from depression. "What's the matter here" is really powerful

"Hey Jack Kerouac" One of my favorites off that album. Really well written song with great lyrics about the Beat Generation of the 1950s.

The world discovered Natalie Merchant with 10,000 Maniacs - one of the best lyricists and unique singers. I’m not surprised that you’d also “get” this song. Your reaction was a treat.❤

Both 10,000 Maniacs and The Smiths had that duality of sometimes somber or serious lyrics combined with fun, bouncy music.

I got to see 10,000 Maniacs when they toured their album after this "Blind Mans' Zoo" and they were amazing. Natalie danced differently for every song and she talked with the audience on such a friendly way.

Great song! I love this album. Really glad to read you are doing a full album reaction here. The last song - "Verdi Cries" - is also one of my favorites from "In My Tribe". I've seen the 10,000 Maniacs live a few times and my most memorable part to this day is a specific live version of "Verdi Cries". There was a woman on violin (from the warm up band - name escapes me now - apologies) & Natalie Merchant on a grand piano and vocals. A simplistic but beautiful rendition. NOTE: I just looked it up and see that their cover of Cat Stevens "Peace Train" has been omitted from later US CD and digital releases. I really enjoyed their song cover. How sad.

It's one of my favorites as well. A while back, someone uploaded the album version from 1987. There were slight pops, crackles and scratches, that were very subtle, and did not ruin the song. In fact, it added to the track, with all those nuances. Very nostalgic, as I miss those sounds...

I don’t remember any KZbinr reacting to 10,000 Maniacs and don’t know why! I’ve been a fan since buying their 1992 album Our Time in Eden and recommend ‘If You Intend’ if you want to hear something good! Love your reactions and the diverse range of music you listen to so keep them coming!

I always had a much darker interpretation of this song, like it was someone with a terminal illness who couldn't get outside if they wanted to and is always looking for the sunny days for a possible better diagnosis.

I'm on the side of those who say that "Like The Weather" is about depression. My sister-in-law gets the credit for my discovery of 10,000 Maniacs. She and my big brother started dating in 1988, and my brother gave me a cassette of "In My Tribe" to listen to.. Four years later, they were married, and in June 1993, I saw the band in concert with them. Just 10 days later, Natalie Merchant left the band to pursue her solo career. 10,000 Maniacs continued on for quite some time after that with a new singer. Other 10,000 Maniacs worth checking out include "Don't Talk", "What's The Matter Here?", "These Are Days", and "Candy Everyone Wants". Natalie later did a very lovely cover of an Aretha Franklin song, "Baby I Love You" as well .

As I posted last week, please explore 10,000 Maniacs power pop catalog. Natalie Merchant has an incredible range. "Headstrong" and "Scorpio Rising" are hard charging tunes with complicated themes where the band and Natalie push the limits of voice and their creativity. Enjoy!
@joeturner1007 ай бұрын
agree with others, the sense of clinical depression in a such a great melody. Natalie collaborated with a group later (the Innocence Mission) - and they have a song that feels more celebratory about being shut-in with the rain (and Hiding Away kzbin.info/www/bejne/fojJoICaaqaqiNE)
