Renée Elise Goldsberry was given THIS song the day before her audition for Hamilton. It was part of a mass-email sent to area actors; she almost didn't go until she heard the demo of it and then she spent the night learning the song. She went in with it the next morning for the director--who asked some questions, gave her a glass of water, and then had her do it again for Lin. He hired her on the spot.

The way Helpless and Satisfied fit together is incredible. The repeated choreography - but seeing different points of view. Angelica sings “if I tell her that I love him” in the same place that Eliza mentions wanting to share Alexander. (The action is where Angelica playfully takes Alexander’s letters from Eliza and Peggy’s hands.)

Phillips soo (Eliza) graduated from Julliard just a couple years prior to becoming involved with the Hamilton project, so at that point she didn’t have a ton of well known credits to her name. The winter’s ball didn’t really happen as portrayed. The letters and quick courtship were a thing though.
@LPnerd
@LPnerd 2 жыл бұрын
not true, the ball did happen and we know this because they had them where they were stationed, upstate NY at the time. Read Chernow's book, on Hamilton, it's what Lin read and inspired him to write this masterpiece.

@@cellokimmy yes, and I'm saying it pretty much did. exactly, no, did he combine a few balls into one, of course, as portrayed left way to much room for questions unanswered. so I wanted to clarify a little as lots of kids read these comments on Hamilton for history papers. Instead of going to the source book. "Isn't that right kids?"

Apparently Angelica wasn’t even the one who introduced Alexander to Eliza, and she actually didn’t get to meet him until the wedding. Also, apparently Eliza hated Alexander for a while, before finally giving him a chance. Of course Angelica couldn’t have him because 1: she was already married with two kids by time Alex and Eliza met and 2: let’s just say that she did want him….because of society status, it would’ve been beneath her to marry so below her wealthy status which….If wealthy families back then expected the daughters to marry into wealth, idk why Phillip Schuyler allowed Eliza to be with Alexander knowing he was a penniless orphan even if Eliza really loved him, some might say that it’s up to the oldest sibling in this case the oldest sister to marry wealthy, but I would think that their father would’ve wanted all of his daughters to marry wealthy. Plus considering the fact that Alexander ended up having an affair…..that looks bad on Phillip Schuyler because he allowed them to be together.

@@tiamarrow6366marrying for wealth was a top priority true. But Hamilton was in good standing with Washington at that point and back then being a war hero carried much weight, hence the whole "rise above my station after the war" concept.

For this show, mic placement is partly actor's choice and partly just what will work best. Many have them threaded from the back of their neck and through their hair/wig so that the actual mic piece sticks out just from their hairline, in the center. Others have side mics that hook over their ear using a specially created mechanism that has now been patented (see Burr, for example). Mic packs (the battery and transmitter) are usually sitting in their lower back under their costumes.The king's mic (and maybe pack) is actually in his crown, if I remember correctly. The sound design for this show is incredible.

Actually in this show everyone with hair has the mic in their hair and the people that are bald have side mics
@mangacraz00
@mangacraz00 Жыл бұрын
Yep the king’s mic is hidden in the crown. It’s part of why he doesn’t dance much for his songs. The crown is incredibly heavy and a delicate balance on the head. So he came up with the very subdued ‘dance’ for his songs to keep the crown on his head. It also helps sell the slightly crazy characterization

It wasn't how they technically met, (he had sat down for dinner at the Schuylers' house once on his way to or from a job he was doing for Washington in upstate New York because Eliza's dad was a friend of Washington's) but it is the first time they saw each other in a formal-ish setting with dancing an socializing. It was at the Morristown Assembly ball in February, and it must have made an impact on them both because pretty much as the play says, they immediately started corresponding, and by April they were engaged.

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote this after reading Ron Chernow's Book about Hamilton. He did one on Washington, too. They are both really well done. I know he talks about this time frame, but it's been a while since I read it, so I can't remember if he mentions the exact moment they met. Also, some of the actors have microphones in their hair.

Great Reaction! I love that you are taking our suggestions and fully making us part of the reactions. To answer your question about the historical references. This is an instance where the play deviates from history a bit. Alexander did meet Eliza at a ball thrown by Washington, but Angelica wasn’t there. In fact they didn’t officially meet until Alexander and Eliza’s wedding day (there were also Schuyler brothers as well at that point). Angelica was married before they met. There were rumors of something more between Angelica and Alexander historically (the “if you really loved me you would share him” is actually a reference to a real letter sent by Angelica to Eliza after they were married), but there was never any concrete proof of any affair between them. Angelica and Alexander were said to be very like minded so they spent a fair amount of time together for that reason, but Angelica was also very faithful to her family. A lot of people said that Alexander and Angelica had an obvious electricity together (also where the “ It’s Ben Franklin with a key and a kite, you see it right” line came from), but a large part of that seemed to be on an intellectual level. Angelica and Alexander were more extroverted than Eliza was as well, so I wonder if that is what a lot of people were picking up on. I guess it’s really hard to say though.

Everyone has straightened you out that this is not a Disney production correct? They just bought the right to distribute it. It was a Broadway show and has won every award there is. Hamilton was Puerto Rican as is Lin Manuel Miranda's family. The 🎤 are in their hair. It was Lin Manuel Miranda's second Broadway show. The first is "In the Heights". I know I’m Super duper late to the party, but I’ve notched something people haven’t talked about yet. Lin Manuel Miranda wrote his songs with inspiration from popular hip hop and R&B artists. For example, Lin has said that “Helpless” was inspired by “Countdown” from Beyoncé. When Eliza sings “I do I do I do,” it’s reminiscent of “boy, killing me softly, and I’m still falling” from Beyoncé’s song.
