We drive through the Salzkammergut, a beautiful landscape of lakes and mountains just outside Salzburg, Austria. After a one-hour drive through splendid scenery we arrive at the little village of St. Gilgen on the shores of Lake Wolfgang, a very pretty place, famous as the home of Mozart’s mother and sister. The journey continues with a half-hour boat ride across Lake Wolfgang, a very pleasant excursion that passes some small village clusters along the way and wonderful mountain scenery in the distance. You can ride outdoors on the upper deck or down below in the bar and restaurant lounge. This pleasure ship has busy waiters who will keep you from getting thirsty or hungry.
The boat soon arrives at the quaint little village of St Wolfgang where you have nearly one or two hours free to browse around, have snacks at a terrace café overlooking the water, and visit the Gothic church to see an important wooden altar carved by Michael Pacher, a leading woodcarver from the Tyrol working in the early Renaissance. People have been flocking here ever since the 12th century when it was a pilgrimage town dedicated to St. Wolfgang.

Can you go to these towns in December?January? Will all the cafe's and shops be open? Also we will be driving. Can we park somewhere and walk into the towns?

Shops and cafes are open, but some tours, like Panorama to the lakes and mountains, only run early May to late October. Parking is available.

Young people would probably have more fun going into the real Salzkammergut which start right behind Lake Wolfgang. More rugged and wild landscape, very open minded people, less conservative, less rich people owning the lake sides and less pensioners ;) E.g. hiking the huts of the "Totes Gebirge" can be great fun also due to the people there.

This was early October, an excellent time, but late September is even better. If you like festivals -- music, food, beer, oom-pah, locals in traditional outfits, folk dance -- visit Salzburg for the "Ruperti-Kirtag" St. Rupert's Festival, several days around Sept 24, birthdate of their patron saint.
