Yes he growled but TBH I think it shows more range. He didn't control his voice the way he should've but just because it wasn't the best doesn't mean he can't learn to control his voice. To me, bad doesn't mean terrible. It just means there is some work. With wider range though there are mkre possibilities

Unfortunately, they can only judge what is tho, ya know? Prob w/ a different song choice = different outcome. This one tho, could REALLY tell how nervous he was. Maybe because of nerves + the song... in many places tbh... he was quite off-pitch too. Hopefully, if it's what HE wants (not his mom) he's been practicing, maybe even taking some lessons to bring it up just a notch when it comes to relaxing & pitch... & can try again w/ a better song. :)

Song choice is a huge factor in a great performance. It also sounded like he wasn’t projecting his voice enough and then he realized that and then projected it too much. It’s not at all to say that it’s a bad song because it’s a great song but not for his voice. To me it sounded more Karaoke but you know he can sing if you’ve seen his video with Michael Buble. I think if he kept at it and found what songs are more compatible with his voice and range, he’ll be able to easily make it in the music industry.

As someone who loves to sing myself (as evidenced by my own videos), I do wish Sam all the best. I don't think this song showcased his voice as well as something like a jazzy / crooner type song would have. Definitely hope he keeps on singing and maybe look into some vocal coaches to help find his own style if he hasn't already. He's still young and has plenty of time to keep getting better!
