Love everything about your van build except the french cleat on the mirror behind the driver. Any minor frontal accident could have an airborne mirror coming at you. Only thing I’d change, love your attention to detail throughout the van.

What a thing of beauty this van is! I play a game of trying to find something you could have done better. Just when I thought - Gotcha, you made the toilet too low for Sam's long legs (you mentioned he was tall), you lifted the shower floor lid and I saw the toilet was the right size. Darn it! You are too good. Flawless! I just love the wide open space and shower design. Brilliant, simply brilliant! Your brain is a such a mechanical wonder, truly.

Great video series! I noticed that the grain orientation on the starboard side was different on the drawers vs the rest; and all similar on the port side: I think that the port side looks better.

I like the shower/toilet combo. Despite what you've said in the past about getting used to doing your "business" a little more openly, I'm still kind of skeptical. That design (or something like it) could work by leaving the curtain as a method for modesty though, methinks. I'll have to play around with it in my designs some. Thanks for the videos; your craftsmanship and creativity is an inspiration. I do have one question about that removable toilet box though, is there a vent hole for it? I know most composting toilets use one, but you mentioned in a comment that that Sam isn't using it as intended, so I'm not sure.
@HumbleRoad2 жыл бұрын
Toilet only needs venting if you are composting. Sam is not.
@warrenmiller11372 жыл бұрын
@@HumbleRoad Interesting, I was under the impression that the venting was needed to dry out the waste and keep the smell down. That certainly frees up some options then. Thanks!

Hi humbleroad, love your channel. I've watched almost every single one of your videos, especially the ones related to the Sam van. I'm trying to build similar false floor/ floating shower system for my van. Do you happen to know what shower pan you used or maybe the rough dimensions of the shower pan used in the Sam Van? I remember you mentioning it was 5 to 6 feet long in one video. Thanks a bunch.
@HumbleRoad Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and supporting my channel! The Sam van shower pan is custom made.
@GreganDunn2 жыл бұрын
Why does the shower draining pan go underneath the cabinets? I love how the bathroom and shower aren't a massive dedicated block of space in the van. This is a great way to incorporate them into the floorplan.
@Un1234l2 жыл бұрын
This is probably one of the better implementations of a convertible wet room I've seen, but I'd still like to say a dedicated wet room is still LOADS more convenient and hassle-free, and is more isolated so easier to clean, or if not clean, doesn't affect the rest of the van.

I personally LOVE the pantry/armoire convertible shower concept. I've been mulling over a similar idea to this for a while. I have a family of 5 and we want to live full time van life so we need as much convertible spaces as possible. If I wanted you to build a van layout I worked on how do I get it to you for an estimate? You have some of the most innovative ideas I've seen from hundreds of concept I've seen.

Might work well to put a fold down surface the size of the cushion that covers the toilet and rests on the toilet seat, although I know this works just fine. Just a thought.
@HumbleRoad2 жыл бұрын
The toilet top cover was not designed, nor settled upon before the video was shot. I neglected to mention that. we will complete it and send it off to Sam at a later date.
@alt342 жыл бұрын
Too bad you couldn’t have made a small box to cover the toilet seat that would include the cushion. Seeing the toilet seat as-is doesn’t seem to fit the other aesthetic decisions and details.
@HumbleRoad2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, just did not have it designed in time
@mikefranks45282 жыл бұрын
Suggestion on the shower curtain being too long: Instead of the cleat you can get the shower curtain hemmed exactly to fit the slow rise. Just fully extend the shower curtain around the track and hem it accordingly by setting it with pins. Take it to a local seamstress (or use a sewing machine) to hem it professionally. This way the curtain can just hang straight to dry instead of part of it being bunched up on a cleat. Great design btw! Love it. 😃
@HumbleRoad2 жыл бұрын
The curtain track is tapered in height. Right now the section that spans the inboard side is at the proper length. When it returns to it's cubby, it's too long.

7:54 George, I caught something, 👀you may wanna round the corners of the French cleat adhered to the wall. When showering people tend to do a lot of overhead arm extensions (e.g. using the wand to say maybe wash their hair or stretching to wash the armpits 🤽♂).
@mjremy26052 жыл бұрын
Yes, good catch! Pointy sharp end there. I would file the sharp ends and also coat them with some liquid rubber. Better grip on mirror cleat, less noise, and no sharpies.

I’ve been fascinated by the shower/armoire concept from Cardboard. Just how clever this design is has been slowly revealing itself in my elderly brain over the last few hours. I really love the very basic (?) toilet itself. I just don’t personally feel the need of expensive and large toilets. Keep it simple. ( I agreed with Irene C on the Natures Head.) A smart man once advised “Take Care Of Business and get on with your day.” And a huge shower without essentially giving up any space at all! Fantastic.
