The first in this season's Humble Road build cycle. A Ford Transit 250 high roof, extended chassis. RWD semi-full-time custom van build. The custom modules are built using 2x2 stick frames and cardboard! This allows the owner to actually walk through and feel every square inch of her van floor plan BEFORE we build with costly (and scarce) materials. Wow, she's come up with a super original floor plan! I love how you listen to your clients and work closely with them to achieve what it is THEY want and then build on it with your immensley creative brain! The beauty of building out an empty van is being able to make it totally YOURS, a van should be designed to meet your specific wants and needs and you seem to really understand that. If I didn't have the means to be building out my AWD Transit 250 ext length I'd be knocking on your door. My son scanned the interior of my van and created the different layouts I'd come up with in his VR program. He set everything to life size for my VR tours and placed chairs where the toilet and seating were so I could feel the space both walking around and seated. I wanted an open feel and good sized comfortable sitting area, I knew immediately which of the plans I wanted after I was through with the VR walk through and it wasn't the one I thought I'd choose from my paper sketches. Window install has held up my build, finally got that done and just built a cardboard version (not as fancy as yours) inside my van to double check my layout decision before ordering the 80/20. I still want it the same plan as I did after the VR walk through but cardboard cemented that decision. VR (if you have that ability) and cardboard are totally worth the extra time and effort. Your clients are Lucky to have the cardboard option and I'm lucky to have been watching all your videos since deciding to build out a van. I'm looking forward to what tricks you come up with on this build George. I've already used a lot of your previous build ideas for inspiration in planning my van, I wonder what else I'll learn about and use from this build 🤔😊. I love the original layout, but depending on the type of camping she intends to do, having her head on the driver's side of the bed may make more sense. If stealth camping on a public street, the crown of the road will put the driver's side higher than the passenger side. You want to make sure to sleep head up if you can't be level.

So just thought I'd throw a few ideas out. In those curved spaces behind the cabinets, maybe a vertical lazy Suzan like a roulette wheel [Spice Wheel, silverware storage] or an oval type track that travels behind the shelf that can be wound that has little boxes with a plexiglass cover that keeps everything in the box as it's rotated around the track. I know you've also got a nice electrical setup, don't know if thought about adding the NEMA 10-30 charging port where they also have the option to charge at those electrical car charging stations.

Very nice layout - we are so spoiled George! After seeing your van builds, I find too many things wrong with the other builds, ha ha! Like biting into the apple in the Garden of Eden. Nothing is ever as good as before. I love your bathroom, fridge, galley, wardrobe and cabinets every time. However, I keep being conflicted in my mind about one thing - such a pity to have those double doors open into a glorious landscape but only be able to view the top half from the bed, and never have the full access into the van from the rear due to the fixed bed taking up the entire room. I much prefer an open hall area, with a pull out slat bed /lounge seat. This model suits me better and leaves the entire hallway open. Of course, all the wiring, tanks, battery has to go under those seats and single bed. But this would be so airy and open. I hope you can build one someday like this. Maybe on the Mini Me Models. Sending you some California sunshine during these cold overcast NJ days! I can bike in shorts during midday and swim open air. So nice!

Thank you MJ. One thing to keep in mind is that the fixed bed provides the massive storage garage underneath. If you remember my van #01, the bed was up front. Very spacious open design, "the class A of class Bs." But very little storage. It depends on how the client intends to use the van. I have a build starting next year with a rear bath and twin beds. Stay tuned, the beat goes on!

Hi George, I love your approach to design, function and form! I have been watching and loving your videos since the beginning. I bought a Transit 350 (not HD) van about a year ago with the dream of setting it up for three people (part time) Two most of the time and have struggled with how to make all work. Your layout is the best I have seen to accomplish this. A couple of things I might want to alter would be to make the bed larger (for a couple) 60” x 75”. 48” seems small! I would like to see a fold up bed segment of 12” or even 27” which would like up with the back of the rear dinette seat back. The bed could fold down over the countertop for night mode. I would consider extending the rear dinette seat to become a bench seat all the way to the face of the 6’ galley cabinet. I would put slide out steps under the bench seat to allow access to the bed at night. I may add a fold up counter to create the L-counter similar to your layout. If the dinette seating was raised about 5” or 6” with a raised floor, it would allow for a composting toilet under the front dinette seat. Another benefit of raising the dinette seating is you could widen the seats into the van window pop-out area for a wider 2nd bed. I love your van design and just wanted to add possible variations for future design considerations. But mostly because I may make these changes to my van. Keep up the pioneering work George it is so fresh and inspiring! Scott T

I forgot to add a question that concerns me. How are you going to add seatbelts for a third (and possibly 4th) passenger? I may have a welder make an L-braket with angle bracing. I want to bolt the bracket to the wall and floor. I have an extra rear transit seat with seat belt, that I may cannibalize the seatbelt assembly from.

Georges, what an original floor plan. And seems tailored nicely with future owner needs! In my Transit same size, I was able to move without cutting any wire the main vehicle harness within the overhead structure members and in the rear barn door structure. That way, i am not limited by the harness for furniture or wall covers. No wire was damaged during the operation 😉

@Orwell Nailed It you can unplug all connectors from the back of the vehicle (right and left sides), and the grounding points shown by Georges on the video (van battery disconnected of course!) Then you have to drag the harness until the front of the van. After that, you drill a hole where you have foam above the cabin area, above the pillar. You then have to run the harness back in the overhead structure. There is a tight hole where the two parts of the body structure meets near the roof where the harness can be driven through. This is the central pillar Georges touches at 3:27. I made also a hole a bit bigger in the back left near the rear doors to go above the rear doors arch. Then you can reconnect all the plugs. This takes quite some time, and requires to be precise while identifying the plugs you connect/disconnect. In the places where the harness goes through the body parts drilled or existing, I added some rubber plugs and even put a loom around the harness - belt and suspenders approach ;-). The harness itself is covered with some foam. The longest part was to get through the hole on the top of the central pillar. Wear some gloves if you intend to do it, the metal edges are rather tough in Transit. Finally, be careful when drilling and running the harness in the front pillar aboce driver seat. The body structure makes several compartments, you have to find the right one that gives you access front to back.

Can I suggest that the seat cushion you stepped on going up to the bed have a timber base that becomes the mid bed part (2nd Bed) and the rear back cushion comes down to fill the space the mid cushion was in. The sliding table is still a good idea, just not needed yet. Make a Lagun table with leg on the bench return, then the 2nd bed can have a table handy at night, or it could rotate and park over the bench return. You and your client will be the best judges, keep it simple you said. The floor is clean the wall is clean no mechanisms but a handy lagun table. Love your design work and logic, and your quality of finish. Love the bench return and it's hutch / bed privacy screen with it's shelf.

I LOVE the idea of making a cardboard template first! I think I would like to stay in that cardboard stage long enough to get a good feel for different layouts. Hubby did that for me in our kitchen. I can really appreciate a different design although those seats look already cramped (especially the one on the bedside) even without the straight wall. Having a comfortable seat/lounge is often undervalued. So perhaps shorten the L part of the kitchen and widen the seat. I'm also not sure about the position of the seating area. From both seats there's no direct view outdoors. You're tucked away quite deep in the van behind counters. Enjoying the outdoors as much as possible even from within the van, isn't that what it's all about (not just from behind a window which isn't the same experience)? One more thing, having the fridge higher up off the floor is so much more convenient.

The dinette seats are 25" wide, which is one inch wider than the standard outdoor lounge chair. Designed specifically so the owner can purchase new cushions wherever and whenever. There will be a large square window directly over the dinette table and a larger one in the sliding door. Your thought on raising the fridge is well taken. However, keep in mind you will give up the additional countertop area and hutch. It's a matter of priorities.

I’m curious how the person sleeping in the bed. Would get up in the middle of the night. If a guest was sleeping in that dinette area? It seams the person in the bed area would need to somehow steep onto the persons bed area below? Or maybe exit out the back door? Say if you need to pee in the middle of the night?

Cargo light switch on rear column left side is pain in the arse! What I did is add another switch and plate and tap the wires from left to right side. So when you open the right rear door, the switch will be on right side. Something for you to think about it. It's entirely up to your customer(s). I have photos if you want to look at my version. What type of mechanism do you use to secure the slide cabinet doors closed during driving to prevent them from sliding open? Haven't seen many sliding doors on the upper cabinets in many vans, perhaps for this reason. Would think you'd keep the tolerance to a tight fit and some hobby felt to keep the rattle down but not sure if that be enough to keep the door from sliding open during braking and driving. You've probably thought this through but be cautious of the cabinet above the door entry. I've hit my head so many times, over time, it brings out the dark side. That cabinet is a goner in my van!

One thing to consider is if she urban camps/parks it on a city street, the curb side/passenger side often will be slightly lower, thus putting her head at a lower level than her feet in this configuration. If she doesn't plan on doing that much, on the rare occasion, she can always sleep with her head on the TV/cabinet side for that scenario, if needed.

@@HumbleRoad your reasoning makes sense, though Kent hit it on the head with regards to which way a van leans and it isn't just when on city streets. I live full time in my van and like the convenience of not having to level the van. Two thumbs up on the fridge (I have the same) and new kitchen layout which I've not seen before.

There will rarely be a visitor, and getting in and out of a fixed bed, whether in the center aisle or offset is the same.

Love the layout. No toilet in this one or maybe an outside shower off the back so you could put a curtain rod between the two rear doors? Are we going to install two double pain awning type windows on each side of the bed. I seen they come pre-installed with shades.

Yes, toilet is under the fore dinette and the shower is out the back doors.
