This was the penultimate round of the Tata Steel Chess India Blitz 2021. Nihal Sarin was up against Sam Shankland. Sam played 1.e4 and soon we had the Scotch game on the board. Judging from the speed at which he was making his moves Sam was definitely prepped until move 13.
The game lasted only 7 more moves. What happened there? How did the game end? Check out this short but instructive video.

Shankland is a genuine GM. An amateur would have continued, failing to realize he (or she) was done. A novice, I recall a higher rated Russian player resigning during the middle game online. It took me 2 to 3 minutes to figure out I had trapped his queen.

What if Be2? Not only it saves rook but connects both rook after some moves and attacks queen too - i thought for a while . But then blacks rook at b8 is just..... Puff for white.
@cwjalexx
@cwjalexx Жыл бұрын
What's striking to me is how uncoordinated white's pieces are in the final position. Almost nothing is defended and white's rook is trapped. I checked with an engine and stockfish evaluates the position as a massive -7 before Qb6. Black even has the time to play Re8 first and it's still around a -6 evaluation.
