Love this, thank you so much Wayne, always learn a lot from your videos!⛳

Thank you for the video. If you look, Sam did everything he could to keep his head behind the ball at impact. This will naturally cause what people refer to as the "squat"...lateral + rotational leg movement. This encouraged his draw as it gave time to square or close the clubface.

The knee break and lowering is to allow one to create greater ground force. No different than an infielder lowering in anticipation of the hit ball.

I think your analysis of the lateral movement combined with rotation and powered by the legs pressing into the ground corresponds to the biomechanical measurements being taken today by force pressure plates and other devices used in modern golf instruction and swing analysis. It looks like Sam Snead recenters his body and starts and completes his down swing by pressuring his left leg into the ground and using the corresponding pressure from the ground to lift and turn his pelvis and hips and shoulders. See Chris Como and Dr. Kwon.

Great video. One question.... Don't you think on the downswing Mr Sneed's right foot/heel was pulling backwards and when his left foot planted it was pushing forward?
@nickm.97265 жыл бұрын
In swings of this era, with the freedom of the legs on the backswing, the hips always move laterally first then rotate later. It's usually a move seen in power players of the time, a result of the lead heel float on the backswing. Jones did this very well, as did Nicklaus.

Excellent point! Combining this with keeping head back behind the ball = the "squat".

Exactly right, sir.

the squat is Sam leveraging the legs into the ground for power which is why he was one of the longer hitters of his day

Notice how his hands at address and impact are at the same spot each time.

The squat is key and no strain on his back because he's not restricting his hips or torquing against his upper body. This swing would kill in modern golf

Sam's swing is very similar to the way you swing a sledgehammer

Is there actually some modern consensus that, unlike Snead, the hip should stay level through transition? That would be illiterate basic physics.
@wdefrancesco5 жыл бұрын
the pelvis is tilted at address and remains so past impact. in fact, many great ball strikers increase pelvic tilt in transition, which is the primary cause of upper body lowering.
@davidmarilley60605 жыл бұрын
@@wdefrancesco I'm not talking about the tilt. I am right with Russell Heritage on that big time. I am talking about the distance above sea level of the center of mass of his entire pelvic structure. If you are teaching, that is something effectively enforceable by the player. Jim McLean calls it the "sit down position". Not having it explains why a number of KLPGA players hit so many drives OB and can't win money in golf. On the low millisecond level the sit down (highly evident in Woods and McIlroy) is, at the onset, a balancing reaction to adequate lateral shifting that happens slightly before transition. The very short sit down time interval, where the right foot pushes into the ground allows a second forward lateral impulse that supports impact, where the player is able to release with everything from the right. The best golf swings have several harmonic cycles in several directions that are not visible on sub 2000 fps video and really need at least a frame per millisecond. And yes,the art of teaching golf should have ways to communicate that to a player's canonical swing style.
