I had this for the Atari 1200XL. SAM can also sing. Great to hear SAM’s voice again!

I wonder why SAM sounds the same on Atari, Apple, and the C64, considering the latter has a superior synth chip - it seems that is hardly used and most of the work is done by the CPU (which is the same on these systems). It is also officially called a "software speech synthesizer" - not relying on a (good) hardware synth I assume.

SAM eventually evolved into MacInTalk, and SAM is also included in Chipspeech

I have read somewhere that the digitized speech playback feature was not a designed function on the C64 but a clever use of a noise glitch.

Back in the day, using my 1670 modem, you could play SAM through it. Hours of fun pranking people with it. Even made a "soundboard" to use it.

Sam's text to sound is pretty basic, but you can do a lot better if you use its phonetic mode.

SAM is clearly NOT written entirely Basic. It uses a basic interface to make it interactible from the basic prompt. The action takes place in assembly/machine code.

Some words have to be deliberately misspelled or else SAM will butcher them. Try inputting, "He drinks douches." and see what happens. Now input, "He drinks dooshes." Sounds better doen't it? Words like, "towel" and, "shower" also require misspelling.
