Abandoned Millionaires Fortress Mansion

We explore an abandoned millionaires fortress mansions.
This unusual structure was built in 1761 by a man named Thomas, a prominent figure in the local area who inherited a great deal of money.
By the age of 25 Thomas was knighted, had become a member of parliament, was elected as MP, appointed as Constable and Lord Lieutenant and was responsible for the county's militia.
He was a notable eccentric of his day and he carried out these responsibilities in an unparalleled way… by building his own private garrison on the grounds of his estate.
Sir Thomas went on to publish laws and an enrolment book for his fort, it soon resembled a real military establishment, complete with soldiers, but had no practical defensive purpose.
The fort contains a parade ground, magazine and tunnels linking the surrounding earthworks with the tower.
The king elevated Sir Thomas to lord of the county in 1776, the American War Of Independence had began and war in Europe had become a distinct possibility.
His lordship’s private force was considered one of the best equipped regiments in the country and the king signed a warrant allowing Sir Thomas to mobilise his militia.
He built a new defensive fort on the coast, at his own expense, while taking refuge at home in his own personal fort but thankfully, the expected invasion never came.
In 1807, Sir Thomas passed away, and with the fort having no strategic importance, it was abandoned.
It now stands empty and although being listed, the buildings continue to decay, a sad end to the fort built by an eccentric gentleman.

Such beautiful stone work! Why is this not a national treasure? I realize there are much older and more historic places that need saving but this is unique. It is not as big as I thought it would be. Rather an intimate defense structure. Love the courtyards and even all the growth. It would be quite a sight with groomed gardens and lots of flowers. Thank you!

Hello Sam and Jess, I thought I was having de-ja-vou again, but then realised that I'd seen this on Karl's channel. The tower with the bricked-up entrance makes me think of "Rapunzel". Absolutely beautiful architecture of this place. I love your cinematics. The files were kept like that before we had computers. For legal reasons they had to be kept for 7 - 10 yrs and were usually stored in a filing cabinet. When you got too many you would put them in the large folders and store them. Awesome explore again. Side note for everyone. Thanks S & J for rescuing the sheep. If anyone rescue keep in mind water is desired by the animals..give water. Also light is bad for bird rescue. It confuses them. Best to let them alone. I know I work with them 🐟💜

Another great explore. Sad that it's gone so far to rot. Also too bad they bricked up the entrances to that tower. When I see windows that you can see in just a little bit, like the ones on the top of the tower, it really makes me want to see inside. Then the bricked up door ways make me want to see it even more. Wow that was unbelievably a large mansion that could be fixed to be Regal, but that takes money. 2 bathrooms and 20 bedrooms, kitchen and living room. The rooms weren’t really small. If you have a commune and everyone pitch in, it would be a nice place. Bed and Breakfast, my mind wont stop seeing all that can be done. Thank God you saved the poor sheep, that’s cruel no window, fresh air, water or food locked up in such a small cage. I would report it, if they didn’t find out how I know☺️. I wish you could have went up in the tower castle, wonder what that would look like since he lived in it?? Stay safe and God Bless you both🙏🏻💕

The bird or any wild animal. Keep totally quiet. Keep very still. You disorientated it with fright. They are a hundred times more frightened of you than you will ever be of them. Alternatively, leave the building. It is their home. That was one lucky sheep when you turned up. You two are a delight to watch and listen to.

Wales is sooo very beautiful & green!!! The property was gorgeous!!! I loved the architecture of the exterior of the buildings! The stonework was phenomenal! I was disappointed with the interior of the building! It was sooo very plain, narrow hallways, low doorways, small, uneventful rooms 👎 I actually was shocked that other than the exterior, nothing appeared to be castle like😢 I’ve always hated wallpaper, as it peels & falls as it was in those buildings! Also, I personally think that it is ugly😂👍 I would have loved to have been able to see the inside of that intriguing White Castle tower! As I always say, & due to my disability notate, that sooo many buildings built in this time period, were not handicapped friendly! Apparently they didn’t have any handicapped people back then🙏😳 Jess & Sam, another wonderful adventure!!! Thank you for sharing this with us! I loved it ❤️❤️❤️

The place was different, small rooms. That poor bird. You have to gently place your hands over them and then let them go. I have had to do that with hummingbirds that got trapped on my open ended and open sided back porch. They fly in but they don’t know to fly down to fly out. I had to hold it in my hands to allow each of them to calm down and then once I was out in the open to fly away. Love the birds.

You know what? Maybe I need to identify this place (if I can) and do a little research. The place itself doesn’t offer much, any more, with its sealed-up tower and its wallpaper showroom buildings! 4:51 If I walked through all that fern and bracken in shorts, I’d be having a good brush-down and a quick check for ticks! 18:30 As someone below said, I also love the shot of Jess on the stairs! 20:50 ‘It really smells like someones been living in here, like there’s a hot body in here’ I wouldn’t know, Jess, but I feel sure that you are right! ;) Looking forward to a Croatia vid!

Strange isn’t it, we agree. That strange little room with the peculiar holes in the floor really gave us the creeps. Who knows what went on here… its very hard to find any history on it after Thomas died, its definitely been used though, a mystery 🧐

You guys should carry a small collapsible net to safely and quickly catch the birds and butterflies you find trapped. I have one for catching my finches safely as they are so tiny and easily injured .

True! I think by doing it more you become more in tune, its also easier not to freak out instantly after a few experiences 😆 It really does depend on the location though, we still visit places and have almost no activity! You just never know where these things reside.
