Swami Sivananda (1887 - 1963) was a yoga guru, a Hindu spiritual teacher, and a proponent of Vedanta. Sivananda was born in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. He studied medicine and served in British Malaya as a physician for several years before taking up monasticism. He lived most of his life near Muni Ki Reti, Rishikesh.
He was the founder of the Divine Life Society (DLS) in 1936, Yoga-Vedanta Forest Academy (1948) and author of over 200 books on yoga, Vedanta, and a variety of subjects. He established Sivananda Ashram, the headquarters of the DLS, on the bank of the Ganges at Sivanandanagar, near Rishikesh.

Went to India in 1994. Wandered around, lonely, seeking, sapped, desperate, exhausted. Happened upon Sivananda’s ashram in Rishikesh on the banks of the Holy Ganga. Somehow wandered into a small room with a large picture of Krishna. Became urged to fall to the ground closed my eyes. Found peace and joy. Bowed to the picture. Walked outside. Asked the monks what is that room that I just came out of. They told me that the room is closed to visitors now. They said that it is the place where Sivananda meditated. His vibrations were still in that room, and greatly influenced me. I later listened to his recordings and read his books. His work allowed me to march on through very tumultuous times and build confidence. Also, his student, Swami Satchidananda, was a great and powerful influence and friend to myself. They are a great lineage and left a powerful body of work to uplift humanity. I am forever grateful to them, as well as to Sister Samaneri Jayasara for her labors of love, making so many works available to so many. Thank you.

There is a very uplifting speech given by Sivananda. I often remember one passage of that speech in times of need, when God seems far. Sivananda says: “The all-Mericiful God resides in the inner chambers of your heart. He is quite close to you. But, you have forgotten Him. Troubles are His Blessings in disguise. He wants to mould your body and mind as fit instruments for His unhampered play of Lila. (God’s Divine Drama) He will do everything for you. Believe me; take my word for it. Open your heart to Him quite freely like a child. He is waiting there with outstretched arms to embrace you.” (It is a very long speech. Much comes before this excerpt, and much comes after it.)
