Samaneri Jayasāra - Wisdom of the Masters

4 жыл бұрын

“Who am I?” is the title given to a set of questions and answers bearing on Self-enquiry. The questions were put to Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi by Sri M. Sivaprakasam Pillai around the year 1902.
Translated by Dr. T. M. P. MAHADEVAN
I have omitted most of the questions for ease of flow - the answers are direct in answering the questions.
Please note that all of my recordings can be downloaded via my Google Drive, details of which can be found under the COMMUNITY tab of the main page of my You Tube channel.

To think that this whole world is just an imagination of the mind, every person that we come across is just our perceptiveness, every happening is just a perceived expression of mind, is so freeing. There is nothing to criticise, nothing to condemn, nothing to boast of, no achievements, no failures. How beautiful the world becomes in the mind. Only love & happiness remains-not for anyone or anything or any reason in particular. Just happiness & love as a feeling remains. Not in the mind or brain or heart-it is just there for its own Self!

Who am I? Am I the awareness reflected when I look into a baby's eyes? Perhaps I am the stillness and strength of an old tree, Or the joy felt hearing a bird's song. Life's mystery is all around and within us! The beauty of an open flower fills my soul. Blue sky and night stars, calm my spirit. Such a wonder to behold in every moment - if we look. No reason to search anymore. For we are the question and the answer. We are the Universe, this Oneness, this Awe! Each an essential thread in the sacred tapestry of Life. We are all this and that. Together as one, united by love. Be quiet, still, silent and see The dancing light upon all, and just Be! Your channel is like a soothing balm to my soul 🙏🙏 Immense gratitude from my heart ❤❤

At 26 min utes to 28 minutes in above Ramana states clearly that meditative practices are essential to create a sattvuc mind , almost wholly essential for western minds, in order to allow novice to get self inquiry successfully off the ground.This is in line with traditional vedanta practice philosophy, I.e. yoga is a preliminary requirement for self inquiry. This idea of graduation is for some reason anathema to the direct path neo-advaita approaches current in the west. E.G Tony Parsons
@eonoe11
@eonoe11 2 жыл бұрын
I think there is a reason for it being anathema, this idea of graduation, when one considers knowledge as either existing or not! One can not partially know something. Either it is known or only suspected, no matter how strongly. It can not be both. The eternal nature of the Self, unchangeable, indestructible and not constructable, once realized fully, needs nothing. The answer to all self inquiry is the one asking, and to simply recognize this precludes any need for gradient activity. Kind of a conundrum? Should meditation be time spent in knowledge, then it could also be called knowing. Should meditation be time spent in the quest for knowledge, then it is merely Illusory action.
@leatui7
@leatui7 2 жыл бұрын
@@eonoe11 You might want to see some of Swami Sarvapriyananda's videos as he brings together both your view and fizywig's. For those for whom it is appropriate, one does not need gradual practice. For those for whom the direct path has not helped, gradual practice helps. in fact, if you look more closely, Krishna Menon (Atmananda) who developed the direct path, was quite open to practice, as are his students Francis Lucille and Rupert Spira. Still, I'm not aware of anyone who has integrated both approaches within the context of Advaita Vedanta as simply and clearly as Swami Sarvapriyananda.

This mind, this ego, this body are not you yet spirit chose them to experience a contrast to better understand its self. To intellectually reject everything but the spirit is to turn your back on it and it's purpose in this state. Go with it, except it, be a good person who wants well for itself and others or else you will become an enlightened being who doesn't brush their teeth or do anything else.

Thank you so much, Samaneri, for your wonderful reading!! There's this question: I've heard talks about "Parallel Realities" by newer spiritual teachers online, yet I've never heard Ramana Maharshi or Nisargadatta Maharaj ever mentioned about "Parallel Realities". Is this a new theory/philosophy or has it been around for a long time? Is there really such thing as "Parallel Realities"? Hopefully, with your deep knowledge of spirituality you can clear this up (Others are also welcomed to clarify). Thanks so much in advance, everyone!
@SamaneriJayasara
@SamaneriJayasara 4 жыл бұрын
I think the reason you've never heard Ramana or Nisargadatta talk about this concept or phenomena is that they would probably say (and excuse my presumptuousness here) "Have you figured out your existing reality and learnt to master that yet?!" They always encouraged people not to bother getting lost in whether there were past lives to remember, spiritual powers to attain, blissing out trips in meditation, and so on. A recent recording I did from Ramana talks specifically about that and clairvoyant powers. The way the Buddha taught was the same. The latter saying that if you had a poison arrow stuck in your arm would you waste your time asking how the arrow got there, who shot it, what make it was, etc.. All the great teachers were concerned with teaching one main thing and that was how to be Liberated from samsara here and now. Everything else is just a distraction and a waste of time. Personally I know little about parallel realities so can't help you but you could Google it! 🙂

Is there a book or a formal guide to fundamentally understand what is the Bhagavan and Samsara . I am deeply interested in Spirituality it's been more than 2 years now , however the concept of rebirth and that the whole word is imaginary seems more like a belief or concept that I do not know is true or not (just a belief system that is not true) , Is there a path to take in order to investigate are these real or just concepts & beliefs ?

I would like to ask which answer do we expect from who am I question since I am asking since 12 years but didn’t get an answer since I am trying at work while at home but still I didn’t feel stillness but it quickly fades away so what’s the answer of the question who am I so we have to ask the mind of right heart since the end point of breathe is also guide to self so please guide me in this path. Regards, Suman from Uk but originally from Lumbini zone.I tried in Lumbini as well but still mind is giving answer.

That's the true truth. Which is why I keep saying this that it is consciousness vs consciousness as far as subject and object dualities are concerned. You are not you, nor the universe is not it. Consciousness in a mind posture makes the difference between itself and itself within itself.

I come to the sacred ground to ask another question. I will try n be clear n concise, no fishing trip. After listening to your new reading of Annamalai Swami, like 10 times, what struck me at first was he tweaked the Masters method, but it was very good. I love that reading! This open me up enough to hear something. This is fresh of the press, just started to do it. I struggle with the inquire but this came up. The Christian bible in Genesis right after the fall. God asks Adam ‘who told you, you were naked’. I don’t want to be deceived on some rabbit trail n go down the rabbit hole, or just waste my time, so I am asking now, at the seeing of this. For me ‘who told you’ or ' who said that' chops both the thought & the person much more simply. If you would check this out, see what happens for you it would be much appreciated. If you don’t like this I will remove the question, no problem.

Hi Tony, thanks for sharing your recent insights with these parallel teachings. Yes, whatever works for one to take you deeper into the understanding is great. I am so often seeing all the parallels between my tradition - Theravada Buddhism - and Dzogchen, Advaita, Christian Mystics, Sufis, etc... that it is clear that Truth is just One. But we have a gizillion words, frameworks, concepts, and structures to explain it and point to it. Thus is the complex and complicated nature of our minds. However, it also reflects such wonderful diversity of culture, language, and spirit. Hence why I choose to represent them all on my channel. I get delight and insight out of all of them. With all good wishes in your unfolding insights.

If I may say something to fellow Christians that read this. As when the Israelites were to utterly destroy the inhabitants of the land, after crossing the Jordan River, so that they wouldn't be a thorn in their side. So is it important to destroy every thought, or they will be a thorn in your foot or side.

I guess I'm screwed for not eating a sattvic diet. But I was screwed when I was. Bipolar they said. I see it as an energetic thing...not a mood thing. I'd be so high, I thought I was like Jesus...on a mission to save the world. I have found that meat is very grounding. I was able to get off the meds entirely.

What did Ramana mean when he said: "destroy the I thought? the I thought no longer rises". Does the simple knowledge "I AM", the awareness of being remain in the one who is enlightened? I suppose if someone had asked Ramana, "are you aware?" He would have replied: "yes, I am aware". Does the mere use of thought as a function remain? Can you help me clarify this doubt? Thanks.
@SamaneriJayasara
@SamaneriJayasara 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Fabio, your questions and wanting to know what it is like for the 'one' who is 'enlightened' are problematic because it is coming from the same mind and thought processes that are the very veil of this enlightenment. Enlightenment cannot be understood through words, reason or the intellect. Although the Masters must use words to help us, they are mere pointers to that which is beyond the mind. If you asked such a question to Ramana, it would be unlikely that he would state "I am aware" but rather would ask, "Who wants to know?" Stay with this very enquiry. The assumption that there is a someone here, a person, an unchanging entity or soul is the root of the delusion. It is this that must be transcended, but YOU can't do it as there is no you to do it. It unveils itself through Grace (in Ramana's language) and when wisdom and understanding is fully ripe, and the mind is purified. I trust these words will be of no help! All the best

@@SamaneriJayasara Hi, in the meantime, thank you for your reply. My question was much simpler: if by asking a question to "someone", that "someone" answers it means that "someone" understood the question and gave an answer. Here by "someone" I do not mean a psychological, individual entity but simply being aware. Even when you say: destroy all thoughts it means that you are aware of this and can still potentially speak and somehow try to verbalize. Ramana too, if I am not mistaken, when describing his first experience of "death" as a teenager: "one entity died and another arose saying I am I". If we deny this, in my humble opinion, we fall into a strange neoadvaita language where "no one is, no one can do anything" which, even if I sense the meaning, I find it a pseudomistic and counterproductive language. Thanks.

How do I think from the heart and stay there? I do not want to be in the mind for the mind causes depression
@SamaneriJayasara
@SamaneriJayasara 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, the mind can be either our greatest enemy or friend. To 'stay in the heart' and abide there as Ramana encourages us, means to allow the thought waves to settle and to stop identifying with them as 'me' or 'mine'. They are simply energy vibrations which in Reality have no real substance to them, yet we give them power by consistently focusing on them and identifying and clinging to them. See this habitual pattern and behaviour that happens, wake up to it, and in seeing it clearly without judging, condemning, pushing away with aversion, or clinging, thoughts will naturally dissolve. It does take some commitment though to be present and aware. I wish you all inner peace and contentment.

Remember love, remember laughter, remember them now and forever after. Continue to exhale until you must inhale your Self (or the other way around). Remember, stupidity does not really exist either.

I don' t understand why would we call "material" world real or unreal, when it is both, constantly changing. Only change is real in material world, and that change us very real. Sure, there is observer who gives meaning to it, but there is still "it" outside observer in the form of vibrations. You can't step in the same river twice, but there is stll a river. I am not saying it is more important than our center in the heart, our own immovable center through which we percive this reality is infinitely more important.

I think the Master's are pointing to the fact that once you fully realise, you realise there is no river. We are dreaming it into existence.

Dear John, Edwin Schrodinger was the first scientist to recognise the impermanence of the external..Ramana does not say it is unreal, only that it is impermanent, uncertain and inabsolute. Look up Schrodingers uncertainty principle. Perhaps in acknowledgement, he named his dog 'Atma'

@@mohanbala3743 Ramana did say that sometimes but real or not it is more important who knows it? There is only one Self that knows. It is in the last verse of Ulladu Narpadu 40 verses on Reality "If it is said that there are three kinds of Liberation with form without form or with and without form let me tell you that the extinction of three froms of Liberation is the real Liberation ".
