The way she talked about her own limitations and (temporary) missteps so straightforwardly and most importantly not diminishing herself in any way while still acknowledging her agency is something men in leadership positions can and should learn from. This is what a leader should be able to do and be - recognise and accept their own humanity and OWN IT. Very inspiring.

So interesting... I spent the whole interview wondering if a man in the same position would be so open, so transparent, so honest. My guess is they would have spent more time justifying their record and their stance, rather than being humble or pragmatic. That said, this is exactly the experience and perspective we need in the administration.

Lovely episode! It's easy to become jaded and think that powerful people are doing nothing...so it was affirming to hear that they're trying, very hard....some things are just too complicated. Also the fact that women face a unique set of challenges in the workplace, even those at the highest levels, makes me feel less alone!

@@headcrusher1966 u know what, the truth is, I barely agree with a whole lot of her pro-intervention, pro - militaristic foreign policy, and she def shouldn't have pushed for intervention in syria and libya. but doesn't take away from the fact that the good things she does goes way unnoticed, and there are a lot of those good things. im willing to hold her to account while still pointing out how she pushed for genocide recognition, helped LGBTQ equality gain more traction as an idea, and helped stop foreign meddling in democratic processes.

This makes me think that "Never Again" needs to be something more like "Should it happen, do something better". We can't control the world, but we can keep taking actions towards an ideal. The other thought that comes to mind (when she was talking about previous generations being more interventionist and current generation wanting to withdraw) is that positionality matters most - where and who we are matters on how to respond to an issue. That's the difference between being an ally to vs taking charge over another country, knowing your own position.

Nonsense. She has a key role in pushing the disastrous war in Libya, for which she has ducked responsibility. The result was a disaster in humanitarian terms and the legacy was misery for the Libyan people, and for security for the world given the fact that Libya is now a haven for terrorists. When she talks about her triumph in the Obama Administration she completely ignore this as if it doesn't exist? That makes her underrated? Really?

Why is everyone so afraid to criticize Obama? Her story seems extremely generous when at its core it is a man going off on a pregnant woman, regardless of the circumstances. I'm a Democrat but I think we all need to become more comfortable scrutinizing and criticizing our own party when justified. Obama's presidency was a flawed presidency, just as they all inevitably are.

Dear Samantha, When will you come clean on your role in the disaster that the Libya War was, and the consequences for Libya? After your astute criticism of the second Iraq War, you basically repeated the errors on a smaller scale, but with worse long-term consequences. Brushing this under the table undermines your credentials. All the idealism inn the world is useless if a disaster is created with the best intentions.
