As a first generation Canadian whose family is from former Yugoslavia, with "mixed" parents (Croatian and Serbian), it is so refreshing and heartening to hear an American speak to the war in Bosnia as being something unimaginable to the people there and how mixed and diverse the country was... and how people feel that that kind of thing is impossible to happen in the US or Canada and how that is an illusion. I feel like a lot of people hear about wars in other countries and think that it happened because it is an uncivilized, divided place - unlike the "West" - and I just want to thank you for bringing forward that insight and share it with others. It's exactly how my parents spoke to what happened and how we shouldn't be complacent in thinking it couldn't happen here

I'm from France, but really attached to democracy, and I'm glad too. I was really sad on wednesday, since so many have fought for people to get these rights, to vote, to debate, to have people representing them in congresses of democracies so I can't even imagine how it must feel for americans. That said that shows that the constitution and rules of law are strong and won't be shaken by a wannabe dictator.

From Ireland Great interview, tx. Looking forward to the Biden/Harris Administration taking over. It seems so long since the election. Absolutely, given the right circumstances every country is vulnerable to extremism. Let's hope it is eight years/two terms of a Democrat Government. Stability and enough time to rebuild America's relationships with its friends. Plus enough time be a major part of tackling climate change. Finally Building an alliance of strong democracies, protecting them and keeping them strong.

I agree with Amb Power that institutions surprisingly held, but there were 5 states that flipped from 2016 to 2020. There were too many challenges to overcome to change the presidential electoral results. If it had come down to one state, would we today say that the institutions held?

Syria, my friend, was turned into a problem. When I was a young woman in the 1970s Syria was a perfectly peaceful place. The invasion of Iraq created a lot of problems for the US...which is why people all over the world stood up to try to stop Cheney, Bush and probably Kissinger from doing it.

Good words, Samantha.... there is way too little positive focus on the added value of immigrants and refugee communities. They add value. And every affluent nation has a social responsibility to global citizens who are in desperate need of refuge. Here in NZ, there are stories of young children arriving as refugees with their parents. with NO English ... and their achievements and career paths are astounding. They apply themselves and ought to be rewarded. 🇳🇿🇳🇿🐑🐑😷🤗

American exceptionalism? Since when have we been exceptional? I’m not saying that Americans haven’t done great things b/c we have, but this idea strikes me as plain old arrogance. Having lived abroad & travelled abroad, I can’t say Americans are any better or worse than any other group of people. There are assholes everywhere, just as there good, righteous people everywhere. That’s our biggest fallacy, IMO.

@anthrogurl44843 жыл бұрын
@@MrOllievirus Given that only about 30% of Americans hold passports, I think some of the problem is a lack of knowledge of people outside the US. Many Americans never travel abroad, so they buy into this idea that we do everything the rightest & the best, which is just not true. Take healthcare & food security. Highest healthcare costs in the world, yet millions have no access to it. High rates of poverty & hunger, particularly children. Not only is that NOT exceptional, it’s downright criminal. This delusion that we’re better than any other country has to change. Even our own democracy, the oldest in the world, is in peril.

I don't believe credibility is the issue. It's credit. Which democracy is going to invest in a democracy that hasn't invested in its own people since Reagan? Education, infrastructure, health care, social security, ... i am sorry, but the optimism of Ms Power feels so misplaced to me. I don't know why, in all honesty. Maybe the times when skilful perception management sufficed by way of foreign policy are finally over? For every single one of the world's larger powers, including the USA? I am a citizen of the country that let the St. Louis refugees in, by the way.

Why are you giving a disgraced former official a platform? Power proved herself to be a hypocrite who criticized the Bush Administration for their Iraq War debacle and then repeated the mistakes in the ill-fated Libyan War, creating chaos and leaving it in worse condition than Iraq. This was was a failure by any measure and created a haven for terrorists the EU has had to deal with since. Her "idealism" is tarnished at best. Perhaps she should work on restoring her personal credibility starting with a little truth and reconciliation including examining her her role I'm making ill-informed, ideologically-driven and disasterious decisions. Power shares with Clinton and Rice responsibility for persuading Obama to make a bad decision against the better judgement of more experienced leaders in the administration that opposed the war. It is telling that Power has made a friend in the war criminal Henry Kissinger, himself an apologist who has evaded taking responsibility for bad, and illegal decisions. It is disappointing Biden had selected this person not qualified to give sound advice.
