CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Noah (Martin Henderson) watches as Samara (Daveigh Chase) crawls out of the television and heads straight for him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A disturbing videotape appears to hold the power of life and death over those who view it in this offbeat thriller. A strange videotape begins making the rounds in a town in the Pacific Northwest; it is full of bizarre and haunting images, and after watching it, many viewers receive a telephone call in which they are warned they will die in seven days. A handful of teenagers who watched the tape while spending a weekend at a cabin in the mountains scoff at the threat, but as predicted, they all die suddenly on the same night. Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), the aunt of one of the ill-fated teens, is a journalist who has decided to investigate the matter and travels West with her young son, Aidan (David Dorfman), a troubled child who has been drawing pictures of strange and ominous visions. Rachel managed to find the cabin in the woods and watches the video herself; afterward, she receives the same phone call, and realizes she must solve the puzzle of the video and the person or persons behind it within a week. Rachel turns to her ex, Noah (Martin Henderson), an expert in video technology, who at first is convinced the story is a hoax until he digs deeper into the mystery. The Ring was adapted from a 1996 Japanese film by Hideo Nakata, which became a massive box-office success in Asia and spawned two sequels.

I would imagine so. This was adapted from a Japanese horror film. They're horror films are supposed to be more "eerie" or "supernatural" whereas American horror has monsters like werewolves, vampires, zombies, etc. The grudge was also a an adaption of a Japanese horror film. I had so many nightmares about her when I was a kid. I couldn't sleep

When I saw this in the theater something happened that's always stayed with me. When the camera pushes in on Samara, the place had gone quiet, and as her hair parts itself revealing her face a single woman in the theater let out the most piercing *scream*. Somehow it was just perfect. Still feels like one of the most memorable audience moments I'd witnessed seeing a movie.

@Take My Breath Away!!! because it's not scary. The first time I saw it after hearing all the hype about it was 2003ish around the age of 15. I'm not sure if it was unique but I'd never seen a horror film show someone crawling out of a TV before, so I thought it was cool and considered it original and creative. But even as a teenager I didn't find it scary in the slightest. For a jump scare you'd find the nurse scene in Exorcist 3 hard to beat. For body horror it'd be Guinea Pig 2 (a film so disturbing that Charlie Sheen contacted the FBI after watching it thinking it was a snuff film involving a real murder). For supernatural horror it'd probably be The Conjuring 1 or 2. The Ring and The Grudge is all hype.

When it happened in the Japanese film that inspired this, in that culture they take the paranormal and spiritual stuff very seriously and so people there were literally too afraid to go near their TVs for days after they watched it.

To anyone who asks "why didn't he just run?" Fear paralyzes a person. And also humans tend to freeze in the face of any danger. It's why so often people in footage of disasters seem to just stand and stare. Human fight-or-flight kicks in and we are mentally dancing between "run from danger" and "watch to see what the danger really is" For Clay, he had no idea why this seemingly impossible event is happening. For all his fear he's on some deep level trying to parse the "why" to what he's seeing which compells him to watch.

Conner Conrad I haven’t read it yet (I don’t even own it yet), but the tape’s curse was actually a “virus,” of sorts. Sadako doesn’t come out of the TV in the book (nor does her ghost appear at all). The virus was created from a combination of Sadako’s dying will, her psychic powers and her smallpox which mutated her powers.

It's Daveigh Chase under the makeup. If you base all this around this around the close up of her face then you are simply mistaken because there is nothing masculine about her. The fact that you can tell that it is a little girl acting so inhumanely in this scene is what makes it so powerful to begin with. If you have proof of this supposed quote from the screenwriter then provide a reliable source.

Actually Erik, In the first Ring movie, Daveigh Chase (Lilo) Also played Samara when she was climbing out of the TV, she wasn't just the Good 'normal' Samara. In The Ring Two, it was Kelly Stables, with contortionist Bonnie Morgan doing the spider crawl. And in Rings, it's all Bonnie Morgan. Archieve footage, like the flashbacks in Two, and Samara walking towards the TV, is just the Daveigh Chase footage from this movie.

I remember how pissed off I was when this movie came out, and people were seeing it, and all like, "Meh, it wasn't really scary." and EVERY time someone had told them that she comes out of the TV at the end and more. When I saw it? I literally had never heard of the movie before. Me and some friends just walked into the theater. "The Ring? What's that?" We hadn't seen a trailer, NOTHING. And it scared the SHIT out of me. That's how you see it.

Same here. I watched this film for the first time when i was eleven, and i didn't knew anything about it, so when Rachel survives after the sunset and Samara's body is taken out from the well, i actually thought everything was over, that Samara would rest in peace and Noah and Rachel would have their stupidly beautiful Hollywood ending. So can you imagine what i felt when she came out of the TV? No, you can't. I actually think the best part of this scene is Noah's reaction...You can tell his mind can't quite assimilate what's going on, and because of that, he can't even think about what to do. Great depiction of how watching something like this could destroy someone's sanity.

The way this movie works is genius. They place a big jumpscare at the beginning that comes out of nowhere, that way you are tense for the rest of the film. From there, do they keep trying to startle you? No, they slowly creep up on you to get under your skin, relying on a slow-burn atmospheric scare tactic. Then comes this scene and they drop the bomb on all the tension they’ve been building up in you.

I remember being bored during a snowstorm when I was little, so I sat in the living room and flipped through channels. I stopped it at the Ring, watched the whole thing, and then when it ended, I cried and had nightmares for the next few days. This fucking movie terrified me when I was younger.
