This is a classic I rarely see recommended. Watching these clips has made me realize this is a film I’ve only seen once in my life. I watched it at a very young age when I lived with a very abusive mother. I remember how real it was to me back then. Scenes from this movie have stuck with me since. In many ways it has inspired my love of film while serving as a reminder of things I’ve moved on from. Even requiem for a dream has become a yearly staple for me, but this movie did things to me as a kid. Might finally be time for a second dive, 20 years later.

This is like the rules about Gremlins - it's been discussed for a while and debated. Theory is that when the tape starts it a hypnotic journey and when it ends you come out of the trance and the phone rings - or the ringing phone is what brings you out and you hear the voice. The phone didn't really ring, you just think it did, and the voice you think you hear was implanted by the trance, so there is no escaping it. So when the tape starts it takes you into the trance state, so you can't look away or turn it off. Presumably if you did, you would not download the whole "program" so would not get to the phone ring, not see the ladders and deer and not die at the end.
