Yumm! I love sambusa. My Somalian students make it for me and bring it to the school where I teach, but I've never tried making it myself. I will try this next weekend. Thanks for posting.

Hi! really nice video. I loved this recipe! One thing I want to point out. The Item you are calling a Sambusa Cutter has a function for cutting a perfectly sized circle out BEFORE you use the interior as a "press". Open the press until it lays flat. The BACK of the press, when flat, forms a perfect circular cutter that cuts a round piece of dough the exact size of the press. It essentially acts like a biscuit cutter. Then just put the cut circle of dough into the press as usual, adding filling. So there's no need to trim the dough around the teeth of the press.

Ever since ive seen this video 2 yeas ago, you dont know how often ive been making this for my dad and my sister. Even her coworkers started requesting for me to make it. I love it. I added my own twist, but it tastes so awesome. Thank you for the video! And honestly though, I dont see why people are hating so much on what this should be called or how it should be called, or how it should be made and which country it should be credited to. Our world is a melting pot, especially with food. Each country has their own kind of filled pastries. Empanadas, sambusa, samosa, it doesnt really matter. Theyre all yummy and tasty. And why does it matter what kind of device someone uses to cook their food? Ive traveled a lot when I was younger. I was born in the Philippines, grew up majority of my teen life in Saudi and now I live in the USA. Through my journey ive met tons of different people from all walks of life. Learned different cultures and religion. You know what it has taught me? Tolerance, understanding, and love towards other people. Especially food ^_^ So stop it with this narcissism and enjoy what the world has to offer. We should all make our own versions and have a big pot luck and enjoy :)

I don't know how so many Middle-Eastern recipes have been adopted by the Bengalis and have become a part of Bong cuisine so much so that people will be amazed to know about their origin. Sambusa, for example, is clearly where 'samosa' or 'singara' has been originated from. We have learnt to cook lentils from the Middle-East too, I guess. Also, both 'kofta' and 'korma', two highly popular Bengali cuisine are originally from the Middle East. We Bengalis too, like the Middle-Eastern people, love to use cumin powder, corriander seed, asofoetida in various recipes. While Middle-Eastern kofta is made of meat, we make koftas of raw banana or raw jackfruit too. The Iranian dish chelow kebab is a hot favourite of all true-blue Kolkatans which was introduced by the famour restaurant Peter Cat. I believe our kathi roll or chicken roll also has a Middle-Eastern origin since laccha paratha and kebabs both are moghlai dishes. I believe poppy seeds was introduced in India by the Afghans. We Bengalis are completely addicted to poppy seed which we lovingly named 'posto'. Sheek kebab or keban in any forms have come from the Middle-East again, or so I believe. Finally, there is the Middle-Eastern biryani, Maqluba, which I think may be the inspiration behind Indian biryani.

Middle Eastern and Indian cultures are very similar in food too.. Sambusa is also known as 'SAMOSA' in India. Though the shape is triangular. The sweeter version full of grated coconuts and dates is also known as KARANJI or GHOOHRA in India. This is a sweet savory. Incidentally the shape is the SAME but is made with hand... Thank you for getting our cultures closer..!!! :-)

Sambusa seems universal my wife makes Cornish Pasties with a filling of ground beef, carrots, onions and potato, Made in the same shape except larger and baked in the oven. Fairly popular in the UK. My wife says in the Philipines they are called empanadas, so I guess this dish is known under different names and variations around the world- united by food?. We are not all that different from each other as some people try to make us seem to be.
@SugarBean91510 жыл бұрын
They're called empanadas in Hispanic countries as well (which I suppose makes sense for the Phillipines.) It's the same dish all over the world with little tweeks on the the ingredients. I'm Colombian, and my grandmother uses pretty much the same stuff, substituting the parsley with cilantro, and seasoning the meat as it's cooked. I've also seen them made with shredded beef. As a condiment it's popular to use lemon juice or pico de gallo.

Actually I'm From Mexico for a state called "Hidalgo" near Pachuca which happens to be the state capital, and there were a lots of english men in the 1600-1900's (miners) and they left some foods that are still cooked among the locals, I guess the name comes from the english Word "Pastry" as it is being transformed into "Paste" which sounds pretty much alike when you say it in Spanish..in the other hand the word "Empanada" is Spaniard and it is used almost in every country where Spain have had ruled, that means most of south America, central and some north America locations, Philippines. and Empanada can be translated as "Covered with bread" sort of.... and they are filled with Bee& potatoes, Rice pudding, and lately they have been pushing lots of new fillins suchs as Cheese & ham, and Marmalade/Jellies/fruit Preserves, and some local dishes suchs as CHicken w/ Salsa verde, Chicken w/Mole and some other tasty dishes, You'll need to come and try them all cos some are really tasty and cheap! 1 is around $ 0.50 to 0.75 USD

Here in Brazil we also have something extremely similar and we also call it empanada. I think the idea of putting meat and some vegetables inside pastry and bakign it is practical and it is easy to think of why is it popular in so many places in the world.

We previously had a Middle Eastern restaurant in our area that served some of the most amazing Sambusa. They offered a blend of cheese with garlic and parsley, lamb with vegetable, a spiced chicken with vegetable, and a very beautiful sweet/savory mixed nuts with figs and honey.... They were absolutely beautiful in flavor! They were nice enough to bake them for the cheese and the fruit-nut mix for me, while the meats - well, you cant beat fried! LOL! I look forward to making a variation this coming Thanksgiving here this week!
