I ditched my junk BMW M5 V10 at auction for a cheap Mini Cooper S R56. It's DEAD but I think it's an easy fix; who knows what will happen but for it's $1,000 purchase price it will be tough to lose!

This car and immobilizer worked in the auction photos. It has to be something really simple like a loose connection. I would start with clearing all the codes in the car and start from there then unplug and replug all of the modules. Stat looking at the wiring from there. The chances those modules failed while at the auction are slim to none. Also does the physical key work in the doors, that would be your first clue that the key was switched at the auction or not.

One of the codes is for network down. IIRC it was the powertrain network (PT-CAN) which does control the ignition/engine. Maybe looking for a missing relay in that relay box will bring up the powertrain network and the key will be detected?
@aaronturner1072
@aaronturner1072 4 жыл бұрын
That loose box with relay under the hood was too fishy to me. Like someone at auction messed with it to disable the car and make it a non runner until they bought it. And yep I saw that on the Carly screen too and was figuring this thing would at least crank by the end of the video. But Sam has the money and time to load up the parts AK-47 and fire multiple magazines at his projects. So at least we get to see how to tear apart a Mini Cooper S for free-ninety-nine and Sam makes more money of the ads so we all win here!

Hey Sam, try if the physical key from the key fob matches with the lock on the driver door. One time, one of the cars I purchased from auction, came with a key from a completely different vehicle, so neither was the key fob, nor the physical key from the car I purchased. Worth a try.

@@garychillingworth there's not one in the interior, the lock they are referring to is in the door handle. It's an emergency override to the electronics. Let me stress EMERGENCY OVERIDE. BMW in their "infinite wisdom" has designed that door lock so that it will only work for ~1 month of use as the primary means of getting into the vehicle. After that it fails & then you really are screwed.

@miroslavmishev4789
@miroslavmishev4789 4 жыл бұрын
Hey guys, this became a very lengthy discussion from a simple suggestion. My idea was for Sam to try if the physical key will work on the door handle lock mechanism, in order to be sure that the key fob he has is in fact the one that belongs to this car. Because if the physical key does not work, then the fob is programmed to a different vehicle, not to Sam's one. I suggested this because this has actually happened to me - I purchased a car, from the auction it came with the key, but it was a key fob (and physical key) not for my car. I guess they got shuffled somewhere in the auction.

Definitely a loaded Cooper S. The Interior was a $2000 option and a complete interior sells for around $800-1000 by itself. Also the factory roof bars are $150-200 now so between that and the interior you are already break even. Looking forward to seeing more on the MINI.

Alexander Christiansen Urghh.. The dreaded THP (or so called, "THPum!"). Many many problems ranging from oil consumption, timing chain rattles, solenoid failure, faulty HPFP and the list goes on... Apparently the most "new" ones are an update to the early problematic ones, with most of the common issues already sorted. Still, 272PS for a 1.6l engine seems too exaggerated. Don't feel the engine will last much.

This seems like a chilly version of the R56s, which indeed is the top spec, at least in Europe. However, if and when this is repaired, you need to have a look at several parts that usually fall: - chain, chain tensioners etc - clogged valves (BMW cleans them with wallnut blasting) - high pressure fuel pump - thermostat housing leaking every 50k kms (at least in my case) - front silent blocks - in my case they fail every 50k kms When and if the above are repaired, you will be able to enjoy: - small rocket - very good turning/handling, even with the stock suspension - precise steering wheel Mine is a 2010 R56s, with 100,000kms and despite the problems, I enjoy daily driving it :) For a $1000 seems like a good deal, provided that you are ready to put some more money in it. Looking forward to see more videos of this thing!

As someone owning several BMW' and Mini's (have been living in Belgium, Netherlands and Germany) and working on them for at least 15 years I've seen these issues a lot. First the red icon is the immobilizer, the Key which is striped through means the key is not recognized at all. The unlock doors and ignition are 2 separate systems on these key's where the ignition system is read via an antenna. Also the ignition part is not powered by the keyfob battery. It is powered by induction when the key is inserted in the key slot. These are know to break down with these models. (And easy to override with a 15 dollar cable, laptop and correct software)

This is a very common issue even among BMW bikes. I have a 2004 BMW R1200GS and the immobilizer is one of the most common problems.There is a small plastic ring that contains the key reader device and when that fail, the car or bike no longer recongnizes the vehicle key and leave you stranded. It is like a $30 part and i always cary one spare. Change is like 15 minutes if you know how. It does not require reprogramming the key as the device itself that reads the key in the car or bike is dead. Once replaced, it will again read and recognize your old key.

Hi Sam, Im a mini owner over in the uk. As youve got the dreaded n14 engine id start to look for carbon buildup and install an oil catch can too. If theres carbon buildup then may need to get the engine walnut blasted. Also common faults are the timing chain going and the high pressure fuel pump. The fuel pump is a cheaper fix to buy and install one however the timing chain is a big job and can be pricey and time consuming as youll have to strip the engine out to do the job. As for the car it is a higher spec model as it has the full leather interior aswell as sunroof and multi function steering wheel Hope this helps

what do you mean, timing chain job can be done in 2 hours on these its so easy and not really expensive anymore. it used to be expensive but parts are cheap now adays.

@@nicklasclausen1247 to be fair i was quoted 4 days worth of work and about a grand from the garages i went too. Was told it was the chain but the timing valves and all that had to be replaced aswell. It was the whole reason i ended up going from a mini one to a cooper s as it became to uneconomical to repair.

I've encountered the same thing with my e90 BMW. For me, the fix was a new battery and alternator. BMW components are very sensitive to voltages. If the battery was weak it can throw the ELV code or the steering wheel lock. Charge the battery up and try a different key, that's where I would start.

Warren McCrory I’ve met a few smiths that work for auctions like this, they are usually the “low end” type. My guess they tried to program and failed a bunch or pulled a computer and botched the data files. Equally though, a antenna fault is a definite maybe too, but if the dollar store smith the auction hired messed with the computers he mighta broke that too! We also all might be wrong and it might just be in soft lockout because they key didn’t work and someone tried to start it 97,000 times

I own two Mini Cooper r56, the key you have is not the oem one, is an aftermarket version of it. Most people buy the aftermarket key shell 'cause if you want to replace the foab battery on the oem one you have to WELD it on the chip. Second thing, I had the same problem with the lock, red steering wheel logo. I've been fixing it wrapping the cas module with thermal tape, the error A0AA is casued by the heat of the sun hitting the dashboard

The development landrover series 1 also had a centre seating position and so did a Massey Ferguson.
