All filters will "flow" the same, the volume is determined by the pump, some media may be more restrictive, but the flow through the filters should be virtually identical, the only thing is if the media is more restrictive it makes bypass events more likely.
@KGiustOD
@KGiustOD 3 жыл бұрын
@@brandonupchurch7628 That’s my point. They should be the same but differences in the media absolutely will change the flow rating. A more restrictive media will not be rated for the needed flow or as you pointed out, possibly cause a bypass which then does not filter the oil. The flow rating is what matters.

@@xabhax His analysis in this video is completely correct though. Any of those filters will likely perform perfectly adequately within a 3,000-5,000 mile oil change interval. Only one I wouldn't use is the Fram if it truly constantly bypasses. The Aston Martin engine is not an F1 engine. It's still just an engine. Obviously I'd still stick with a better brand personally, but he obviously did this to get attention and it's working. Clever, IMO.

"Cheap disposable oil filters do not have enough pore density - basically they contain too few pores. As a result, the pores clog quickly. Once an oil filter gets too clogged up, its bypass valve lets the dirty oil through to the engine. It’s better for an engine to get dirty oil than no oil." It's like a quality HEPA filter for your indoor air. There are cheap Chinese versions that look and feel the same but perform quite differently.
@802Garage
@802Garage 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on which cheap filter. Some filters are quite literally rebrands that more expensive brand names use as well. There are only so many filter manufacturers in the world. Subaru used to use only Tokyo Roki, then went to Honeywell AKA Fram. Napa rebrands Wix and other brands for their series of filters and actually charges less despite the filters being identical. Basically, there is so much more to it than just price and most filters are going to do the job on a typical oil change interval. I personally stick with higher quality brands I like such as Wix and Purolator, but I'm just saying his overall analysis was correct.

Mann filter from Rock Auto
@blahorgaslisk7763
@blahorgaslisk7763 3 жыл бұрын
@@chetbales3962 Usually you mean "Original Equipment Manufacturer" when you are talking about OEM. The cheap filter he had was not a OEM filter in the usual sense as it stood for Original Engine Management. So don't mix OEM and OEM. The cheap filter is only called OEM to trick people into thinking they get some kind of standard product. After all, "everyone has been telling them to get a OEM filter so that's what they bought". Now to the really confusing part. A OEM filter for a engine does not have to be manufactured by the engine manufacturer. However it has to be manufactured for the engine manufacturer. That is the manufacturers enter an agreement to have the filters made and stamped with the engine manufacturers brand name and model and part number. This agreement will include some language detailing the capabilities of the filter meaning the manufacturer can't sometime later just witch to using tissue paper instead of the proper filter cloth. Now with quality brands like Mann there is little risk of them cheeping out on the filter cloth or construction even on their "generic" filter range, but with something like the "OEM" branded filter in the video that's not something you can rely on. So forget about the filter being called OEM. In this case it has nothing to do with either Mann or Aston Martin. It's just a way to trick people into buying something they think is the correct filter for their car, no matter what brand.

Small point. Cars start off a battery. Once started, they produce their own electricity. You can even disconnect the battery. And revving high enough the battery is actually being charged. And those things sticking out of the gearbox (or diff in conventional RWD cars) and spinning are called stubs.

One of the concerns with the aftermarket filters is the bypass pressure valve. The Aston uses a very heavy oil (10w-60) and is believed to have a relatively high force spring on the bypass valve. I'd want to know that the other filters have the same spec.

Wow! I'd use any of those filters except the Fram. It literally just allows oil to bypass unfiltered constantly? That's ridiculous. That other brand is Pentius, by the way, and their filters are generally fine. I'm a big Wix fan myself. Purolator is good too.

Why is everyone obsessed with the price of his filter? What if it was free? What if the store had a promo and gave him a free filter instead of a clearance price of $1? Would a free promo filter be an even worse option? lol

The relief valve opens a lot more than you'd think. When the oil is cold it is thick enough to not readily pass through the paper and the bypass opens then. Oil filters mostly catch oil sludge and wear particles as that is what is in the oil. If the engine has been apart then sealant and gasket bits might get captured. If you dissect old filters you'd see very little except sludge lines in the pleats of the paper. If you make the filter paper have finer particle capture then it is harder to pass oil through and the bypassed oil is greater so there is a balance point of filtration size and more unfiltered oil flow. Bigger filter can have tighter paper but many engines have no room for larger filter.

I actually seen that video with the oil filters when it first came out. Almost every car I own or have owned have been Fords and when it comes to oil filters that's all I buy is motorcraft the same with the air cleaner. Someone else had did a air filter test and it showed how the other brands of filters fell apart after a short time and how the motorcraft filter stood up to everything they threw at it. Apparently the other brands do not use a good base that holds everything together. With the oil filters I was taken back that Fram finished almost dead last. That had always been my go-to filter for any other brands of cars I have owned. I saw in the comments from the last video about people talking about the $1 filter. A lot of people don't get it when it comes to RockAuto. They only try to hold on to stock parts for a certain amount of time. If that type of motor and other parts haven't been in production for 10 plus years they want to try to recoup some of the money they have in inventory. I have already seen from myself parts for my expedition that has gone from $175 all the way down to $35 within 6 to 8 months. If you sign up for their newsletter enter in your cars all of them once a month or so you will get a email telling you these parts for your car are now on clearance. You just will not believe how cheap some of the stuff is. I have already pot different things like wear and tear items that I just did not need at that time yes they have them here because of how cheap they were and if I were to never use them I'm not out a lot of money and I can always go online trying to sell them or give them away. You definitely made me a believer in that jump box. When the first ones started coming out that small I had some bad luck with them and could not even start my Harley with one. So I have stuck with the big ones that's about the size of a car battery. I want something small and compact and since all of my vehicles are each cylinders I need something it's up to the challenge. Like always enjoyed your video look forward to see the final one for this car.

19:45 you will never be able to see the difference in the filters. When you lookup Wix filters specs they have different filters that are in the micron range of 12-30. You cannot see that with the naked eye.
@802Garage
@802Garage 3 жыл бұрын
Funny enough the Wix XP filters which are "better" and are supposed to last much longer actually just have a much higher micron rating and therefore only trap larger contaminates. The micron rating is not the whole story, nor is the price. Any of those filters he showed will likely do the job in a normal interval just fine. I wouldn't use that POS Fram though if it bypasses constantly. I tend to stick with Wix and Purolator.

(Not to discourage buying discounted and explicitly "damaged" filters. Just suggesting that potentially-destructive testing/analysis be part of the process.) (as a teenager, in the 90's) I was assigned to disassemble dozens of different branded oil filters that were accumulated wholesale from various flood and smoke/fire damage events; And found that many of them were dimensionally identical internally w/ FRAM, down to the artifacts from the tooling used to crimp them together. One thing that I noticed was that of those that arrived with even marginally collapsed boxes (previously water or solvent logged?) *only* the FRAM branded ones had filter elements that had separated from the mesh in a way that literally opened a path for oil to flow without any restriction. The dimensionally identical X-re-branded (and repackaged ?) filters were not compromised in this way. (If this was because of storage conditions or higher quality packaging [EDIT: or higher X-brand standards] was not explored.) The assignment was expanded to included 'discount' boxes that were previously offered for *purchase* new/surplus which had at most droplet sized discolourations with troublingly similar results. ... I had to workout a system so that these suspect filters could be identified *and sometimes* removed from mixed stores by others. (Note: I do occasionally buy "damaged" lots of filters, If I can identify the 'damage' and if it affects my use case. Lightning storms have been fantastic unexpected windfalls for me.)
