The Double Dragon theme from this game is so awesome. What you have playing during the credits. The NES intro is a very close second, but the instrumentation they used for the SNES rendition sounds appropriate for a legend of video gaming's toughest twin brothers.

I will probably never "return" to Super Double Dragon (pun intended), seeing as Return is the same underlying game, just enhanced and more feature-complete. 12:48: in addition to Williams & Roper being named after characters from Enter The Dragon, Billy Lee is named after Bruce Lee, his 2nd name being Lee but also his 1st name being Billy as in Billy Lo, Bruce's Character in Game Of Death, Linda is named after Bruce's wife Linda, and Bolo from Double Dragon 2 (mistakenly referred to as Abobo) is of course based on Bolo Yeung from Enter The Dragon.

I’m sure Billy and Jimmy are still considered to be twins, the manual just didn’t say so. However, as we know, twins are never born at the exact same time, and this game answers the question of which twins was born first, and it turns out it is Jimmy. Jimmy’s position as the firstborn has continues to remain canon even when the brothers are still referred to as twins.
@SameNameDifferentGame
@SameNameDifferentGame 2 жыл бұрын
The US manual specifically says of Jimmy "he is Billy's older brother." Obviously, one twin has to be born first, but none of the twins I've ever known have referred to each other as "older" or "younger." They say "my twin brother" or "my twin" or whatever. "he is Billy's older brother" implies they aren't twins in this game, which is pretty clearly non-canon in numerous other ways, besides.

I switched to Return of DD soon after hearing it was the "only way to experience Super DD". The evasion moves are actually quite true to real martial arts techniques. If there are masochists out there, play the Genesis Arcade Double Dragon. It is faster than the original. Completely brutal, but not as good a game as Return. The elevator bad guys are a PAIN IN THE ASS in the US version. RE: Roper, his portrait is on the Wanted poster in the original, and he´s described in the manual.

It is a very deep and complex game with an excellent story that actually took me by surprise. I expected the usual, my girlfriend has been kidnapped for...reasons. The writing us top notch aside from a few spelling errors and I suspect regional difficulties. I love the main protagonist in the game. He exists not to help people, do good in the world, feed the poor, or help the impoverished...he just wants to be a Yakuza. So, I just found this video recently, even though it's 4 years old now. Firstly, I just want to say that just because one of the Lee brothers is called the older or oldest doesn't mean they're not still twins. In the case of twins, the older or oldest is the one that came out first, basically, the older one would be only seconds to minutes older, but would still be "the oldest". Not saying that's what they did here, but rather, I'm just pointing out that saying "Jimmy is now the oldest brother" isn't really prof of them not being twins anymore. Also, I've seen people talk about the game speed in these comments. YES, the game IS slow, but that's by design. It's not because of lag or unresponsive controls, but rather, it's more like the oldschool Castlevanias. All of your moves happen the SECOND you press the button, but, like the whip from Castlevania, they all have small amounts of windup animations that must be accounted for. This runs counter to how most games in this genre are played, thus I think it throws people off and many are left without the ability to truly articulate why the gam feels off other then just saying it's slow, and in their minds, slow must equal bad. But again, the game was very much built around this. I imagine the defensive moves would be MUCH harder to pull off at higher speeds for the average player. Sure, they're faster paced modern games that have defensive moves too, like the 3D Ninja Gaiden games, or using Royal Guard in the DMC games. However, even in those games, you have visual cues to know when to block, and are given time to react. Given the nature of sprite animation though, without those "windup" frames, which the enemies also suffer from, you'd have almost no warning to know when to time your blocks. There's a rom hack that let's you just hold the block button, but think that takes away from the skill that is learning how to block properly in this game. I will say however, that the game needs a customize control option badly. One last thing, the super bar mechanic in this title reminds me of Cyan and his Swordtech/Bishido charge bar in Final Fantasy 3/6. Random thought I know, but, it's just what I thought of when playing this game. Sorry for the wall of text.
@SameNameDifferentGame
@SameNameDifferentGame 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I never really got the "slow" criticism of this game. Like you said, it's not laggy, it's just paced more slowly than, say, Turtles in Time.

@Console Wars, This isn't the one to convince you in all honesty and I say that for both versions of this game. I really Recommend DD2 (NES or PC Engine version), DD4 (recently released on PS4 digital only), DD:Neo Geo, or DD: Neon. Especially Neon, it is just a goofy fun time. Completely satirizing the series in general.

Neon is not just a parody of the Double Dragon series but when you think of it, all 90s beat 'em ups (mostly from Konami) in general. And that soundtrack? It might put even Violent Storm's to shame, and that's saying a lot!

Is there any point in having a big score in this game other than having a high record? There's a couple of ways to get a lot of score by glitchs and infinite stun punches. Well there ARE a ton of differences between early gaming vs mature gaming in terms of the industry. We dont see a lot of innovation anymore due to time/costs in making a modern game vs these days. So a lot has changed its not imagination or nostalgia. No patches then, but games were much smaller/simpler then they are today

You know...all Billy and Jimmy truly needed was a handgun and about 50 rounds of ammunition per stage and this would have been a whole lot simpler...;) I get that the differences don't really make a difference at first...but as they start to mount we see a different game emerge- I get it. I have a long history with Double Dragon dating back to the first. At one time the beat em' up genre was my favorite. I got the first Double Dragon for a birthday present on the Sega Master System and played it nonstop. Unfortunately, my Master System stopped working and had to be sent in for repairs and that was also around the time of one of my many surgeries. My parents (well mother and father...step parents can fuck off) knew I loved Double Dragon and jumped at the chance when they found out is was also on the NES. Here I was in the hospital, my own TV from home (something I still do when I go in...well pre-Switch) and my Nes hooked up playing Super Mario 2 (it was hard to find in stores so the staff would come by and check it out..actually, I have a funny story about Super Mario 2 and a group of guys from the morgue if you are interested and me a sick 6 year old at the time). My mother came in with Double Dragon for the Nes and it changed everything. I was stuck in the hospital for another week...with all I can play Double Dragon! At any rate, I have a bit of history witg Super Double Dragon as well...although not much. I literally almost picked it up for my Snes. I had both the Snes and Sega Genesis (both around launch) and of course I mowed lawns at this point for many of my games outside of birthdays and Christmas. I had at this point all three for my Nes, Streets of Rage for my Genesis, and Final Fight for my Snes. When I saw Double Dragon on the Snes I nearly jumped out of my skin....I yelled at the clerk "THAT ONE!!!" as if it were the last copy on planet Earth and I was rescuing it for future generations. I was about to ring out when I saw a kid make a beeline to the Genesis side and scream at his mother "I WANT THAT ONE!" The clerk guy still holding my Double Dragon asks him which one and he says....Streets of Rage 2. The guy behind the counter grabs it and starts back to the register and I said..."make it two." Unfortunately, I did not have the money for both and my parents were not with me....so I had to make a choice and that was invariably for SOR 2. That I'm afraid, was the last time I ever seriously considered buying a Double Dragon title outside of retro. Yes, Double Dragon is amazing and has a good lineage but by 1992, we were ready for bigger and better things. Great video as always. I really enjoy the work and effort you put into this. ;)
@SameNameDifferentGame

Game Gear Double Dragon has guns... it kind of dampens the fun of playing a beat-'em-up, honestly. (Though Punisher and AvP both manage to do it well.) If I'm being honest, Streets of Rage 2 was probably the correct choice, as much as I love Return of Double Dragon. Being stuck in the hospital like that must suck, but at least you got to have your games with you to pass the time/take your mind off your illness.

@@SameNameDifferentGame I was joking about the gun...it would be a terrible idea unless limited like Dynamite Deku. I remember being blown away that SOR 2 had come out...how did I miss that one?
