Cb Major is a real key signature, and it's the grossest thing you've ever seen on a staff; 7 flats meaning that everything is flatted (Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb). It's enharmonic to B major which is why it wouldn't be used very often, I'm convinced the only reason it exists is to serve as a literal shitpost for theory professors. I never even saw it on a page until college level music theory.

Great video, as always! Don't remember if I said it last time, so I'll just put the thought down: The end result is quite contrary to modern electric traction. There's surely a point where it goes downhill again, but if you have a train regularly running with one locomotive and run it with two instead (most likely because of some problem with the cab car, so you need a loco on both ends), you usually end up using net significantly less energy. a) Because your acceleration is much better so in turn you can drop some speed spikes you'd otherwise need to keep the schedule and b) because you double your dynamic brake force and thus drastically increase the recuperation (more than double, because you now can do way more with dynamics than usually). I'll add that I do assume the first factor might move the result significantly in favour of the bigger steam loco in actual train operations out there on long runs with big trains and actually long ascents and descents. But it probably won't be enough to turn it around, I strongly suspect the bottom line would still be to use the best suited and not the biggest engine.
@Hyce7779 ай бұрын
That fact is still super fun. Interesting how the acceleration is what really makes it in lighter tonnage services.

I would like to know if 20 is an uncomfortable engine to operate. Your feet are next to a hot boiler. Really hot in the summer. If you on the deck plate it is small. The plate might be comfortable in the fall and spring. Cold in the winter. The engineer never gets away from the heat. The fireman is next to the boiler when he is managing the water so very hot in the summer. Still hot at the feet in the winter. The engine might be a nice riding engine but the environment of the cab I would think is difficult. The Video is great. Great action and sounds.

I was just at a railroad museum I live near by (points to those who know which museum) and took a look inside the cab of a Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range 2-10-2 Santa Fe type. Interestingly, the regulator was at diagonal angle, and looks kind of similar to 491’s regulator. Also like the 491, you had to fire it by shoveling. Keep in mind this is a Santa Fe type that is a good deal bigger than 491. Must have been a pain to fire by hand when working the locomotive hard.

Why did you have to keep "pumping" the throttle (?), starting the larger engine?
@Hyce77711 ай бұрын
491 is an odd duck - she's got the same steam dome throttle style as 20; but being that she's superheated, the steam from that throttle valve basically travels twice the length of the locomotive *extra* vs. 20 before it goes into the cylinders. As such, you have a couple second delay in what goes on; and, with how big 491's throttle is, compared to how little train we were running, you really have to feed it just a little bit of steam to make work.

I always forget that you Americans are so determined to drive on the wrong side that you even do it in steam engines - the one place where we should in theory be agreeing, since it's the one method of transport that we drive from the left hand side. (...except Great Western Railway locos. I don't know enough about the history to elucidate, but they were RHD until the big amalgamation of railway companies happened. Maybe they and the yanks were the right ones - I can't imagine it would be easy to have swapped to fire left handed just for the sake of "modernity".)
@KidarWolf11 ай бұрын
I can think of one argument in favor of firing from the left, and it's to do with dominant handedness in firemen - with most of the world being right handed, firing from the left would make it easier to get ultimate control over where your fuel lands in the firebox, since your right hand would be at the top of the handle on the scoop. It may actually be beneficial to the fuel economy of the engines because of that increased accuracy. It probably doesn't matter for short hauls, but for long hauls, it probably adds up to quite a bit saved. But that argument's all hypothetical. Switching to unify all operations to the same side in British railway operations was more than likely about reducing the difficulty of switching engines - just because you're comfortable operating a steam loco that's RHD doesn't mean you'll find it as easy LHD, and vice versa - there's a lot of muscle memory to retrain for it.
