• TEJAS EXPRESS coaches ... -~-
From the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in the south - for a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds and into the wonderful world of Indian hill railways.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a line so close to the people that it flows like a river through their lives. The relationship between the train and the people is changing, however, as a new generation of Gurkhas populates these hills, demanding an independent state and fighting for a new identity as they journey into the modern Indian world.

It was watching this that lead me to visiting Darjeeling back in 2012. I was travelling through Asia. I went on the toy train and actually met Sita. She passed me as I was crossing the tracks and she noticed me looking at her. I said namaste and did the charade's sign for TV show. She nodded it was her. I tried to tell her how much respect I had for her and asked how her boys were. She said they were doing fine. I asked if i could take her photo and offered her money, which she would not accept. That photo occupies a special place in my office. What a fantastic woman.

I have hours of very atmospheric video from a trainspotters’ tour which visited Darjeeling in 1984. No diesels then ! Most of the Darjeeling videos now online are modern and staged; my video recorded the actuality. I just need to digitise the video and put it on KZbin…. 😀
