@robertanderson69292 жыл бұрын
@@davidc6510 On a serious note, I did exactly like he has done for a long time. I had hundreds of holes on every surface with something mounted to it. During a refit I filled what had to be over a thousand. After that I was very selective about the holes I drilled in the fiberglass. I made grab rails out of scrap sepele plywood by epoxying strips together and shaping them with a router. I tend to throughbolt these with backer plates anywhere I need to mount small things. This way I can mount them on the grab rail instead of drilling holes in the fiberglass. And plugging holes in the grab rails is fairly easy using a plug from the same plywood with sawdust and epoxy. I filled a seal-a-meal bag with a 5 lb coffee can's worth of sawdust just for that purpose. If something needs wiring I drill a third hole in the fiberglass for a grommet near the middle of the grab rail and just mount the wires on the back side of the rail. I actually like doing that as I can pull the whole rail off and troubleshoot wiring or mount something which needs to be though bolted then just bolt the whole rail and its contents back in place.

Your prop exhibits the rosy pink color that indicates it has been heavily compromised by electrolysis making it quite brittle. If you strike something with the prop it could shatter.
@WojciechP9152 жыл бұрын
That is interesting. I know zinc will leach out of brass and leave the copper behind, but bronze is supposed to be fine in seawater. If he sands a small patch and it returns to normal color below surface, it is probably fine though.
@achosenman93762 жыл бұрын
That is one possibility, the other and most likely is a reaction to cleaning chemicals. To check, just sand lightly and if normal brass colour returns it is nothing but a surface reaction.

I had that shaft seal on my boat 25 years ago and it was amazing. It really was maintenance free. And every once in awhile just for giggles I would pull it back and let a whole bunch of water come out and then giggle. I did have that hose connected for lubrication properties. No more stuffing boxes to constantly need tightening repacking and leaking
@samholmessailing2 жыл бұрын
Ive never had a stuffing box but based on what ive heard from friends who have stuffing boxes they seem like a pain. I love the pss is Pretty much maintenance free
@craigross59452 жыл бұрын
@@samholmessailing yes they are the benefits of modern technology. I've had stuff in boxes before and as long as they are stuffed correctly, they're also pretty maintenance free for a long time. The trick is not to spiral wrap the waxed rope but instead use short sections stacked on top of each other with the split at opposite ends alternating. That will prevent the water from climbing up the screw sort to speak. The benefit of a stuffing box is that it's pretty easily maintained at sea. There's very little to go wrong all of a sudden. That's why they were used for so long and still are in some cases.

Many lithium batteries have charge controllers built in that will actually cut the battery off before that state of deep discharge ever happens. However if stored for an extreme amount of time, a lithium battery May deplete itself to that point but it does take a long time. Lithium batteries do not lose power over time as fast as just about any other battery technology.

I prefer the old school stuffing box for the prop shaft. It drips but it's simple and unbreakable. The dripless on the other hand relies on pressure to keep the water out.and for any reason if the pressure is absent, water will poor in fast. My boat came with the dripless so I will live with it for now.

Hey Sam, why not a three bladed prop ?
@itsclearasmud77182 жыл бұрын
Drag.
@fredmertz17912 жыл бұрын
Wait a minute, if you have a two bladed prop and the engine stops so that the prop is perpendicular to the keel line of the ship, do you not have the same amount of drag ? Because with a 3 bladed, at least one of them will be close to centerline, Some of the time. We are not talking about a lot of drag here. And I believe the 3 blade will increase your causing speed and efficiency.
@itsclearasmud77182 жыл бұрын
@@fredmertz1791 all three blades are still in the water. If you go three bladed the drag is significant. Feathering and folding props are used in situations where increased pitch and less drag are a factor. And on a power boat your point is well taken. On a sailboat cruising is by wind power and any and all friction, surface area and hull forms are taken into consideration. Yes its a compromise. But if you are making 85 miles a day, 15 extra miles is significant.
@fredmertz17912 жыл бұрын
@@itsclearasmud7718 ok, but the old two bladed does neither fold nor feather. So if you have a total drag contributed as drag/ each large blade(2×) Is that drag a greater detriment than the benefits of increased speed and engine efficiency?
@fredmertz17912 жыл бұрын
@@itsclearasmud7718 I'm just envisioning an Atlantic crossing where you're forced to cruise because of a no wind condition. Obviously, I think the outboard well would be best, you can hoist the engine up when sailing and drop it down when a cruise is needed.

Quick question: Won't venting the shaft seal introduce oxygen and salt inside the seal? Causing oxidation and damage? Would you not be better off NOT venting it? Just sealing it to maritime conditions? Disclaimer:. I know nothing about shaft seals. I did notice the one you originally had installed was not vented or cooled and lasted a WHILE. My bet is you're better off keeping it sealed invented.
