I have to say thanks for filming during those conditions. I love those passages with moments where you think "should I continue?". About your diesel leak, that's a Yanmar secondary fuel filter. The "vent screw" is leaking. There are lots of people having the same problem. I just bought the entire housing and they have changed the design on the new one (has groves along the sides of the female threads to provide the venting). So it's clear that Yanmar realizes they have a design flaw. Still, I love my 2gm20f.

great vid as always, this one looked really scary to me, just seemed like the perfect combo of being a bit tired towards the end there, and some unpredictable and increasing wind, paired with very rough seas, with cold water and wind. i know many in Norway would say that's just a regular day in the North Sea, but this was one of the first videos of yours I ever felt a little uncomfortable about the conditions, well maybe i've felt it in other vids of yours but those were more related to my inexperience rather than something you were actually going thru. but you seem to portray such an even temperament it's hard to tell what the conditions are like sometimes because you seem to take it all in stride really really well. which seems to be an intangible part of sailing, or maybe it is the most tangible, gotta go with the flow, and also push your limits at the same time you have some limits for safety. thanks for the inspiration Sam

Crikey you had me getting really anxious watching this episode! You never seemed phased when the boat was really leaned over and you were getting banged about. Not being a sailor, how far can these lean over before capsizing and what stops it doing that when you are on autopilot? It also looked really cold!
@brierenaud17343 жыл бұрын
The keel is usually heavier than the boat, and goes quite far into the water usually- when sailing you make sure the boat is never overpowered by the sails so you can safely stay upright!
@JdoubleU12223 жыл бұрын
That's why he "reefed" the mainsail right away (made it smaller), and then later took it down and went with just the foresail. Less sail, less chance of bad things happening.
@brierenaud17343 жыл бұрын
@@JdoubleU1222 absolutely, and it’s much more comfy going slower sometimes and finding the sweet spot speed wise for the conditions
@magdakaniewski3 жыл бұрын
Most heavier boats will get knocked down, not capsized and can recover from pretty much a roll. Depending on the ballast ratio. Most cruiser types have a ballast of about 35 to 45 percent. That, together with the depth of the keel and shape of the hull helps it recover. That said in heavy conditions it's imperative to make the boat as water tight as possible. Also cockpit size and draining ability are a huge factor for safe sailing and knockdown recovery. Hope this helps.
@brierenaud17343 жыл бұрын
@@magdakaniewski ^^^^ really well said, and for peace of OPs mind, THE most dangerous thing on a boat is fire, rather than rolling/capsizing etc - so it says a lot about how well they are designed!

Sam, we have /had the same diesel heater me thinks and the same issues too with the error codes. There’s a few videos on the KZbin problem solving it depending on the error code that your getting but for me it was down to the battery I was using, just didn’t have the amperage in it to run, then turns itself off resetting itself to 24v input instead of 12v. There are methods to change it around but in the end I just took the thing out and replaced it with a gravity fed diesel heater and up flue, less mess,hassle and noise, maybe consider something like a solid fuel cubic mini or cubic cub.?? Ref your slight offshore passage and increased wind and wave situation I think someone commented reef earlier rather than later though personally I’d of had storm jib and triple reefed main or storm mainsail at that point ….possibly hove too with a para anchor from the bow and let that blow pass over as looks like pickled herring could sit quite well to a sea anchor set up. Either way glad your safe and well.
