Motoring along the south coast of Sicily, from Siracusa to Marsala, we ran over a submerged log. First we heard was it banging along under the hull. Quickly cut the motor, but the log (~10 ft x 18”) snagged the rudder. We were getting ready to reluctantly go over the side to free it when the wind shifted the boat around and the log freed itself. What’s with all the bloody logs?

I like this channel a lot. It has to do with real sailing - not many sailing channels do. I guess if you're on the move it's difficult to stop and argue you case for being 'unlimited' charts when all you want is to move on. You should try to argue it though (research applicable dates, etc etc. and pound the facts with their Customer Service). If that fails getting a memory stick with sufficient storage may be the way to go, provided you understand your immanent need to back up those files somewhere (maybe cloud etc). Then updates need to be done every so often to accommodate shoreline and sea changes. Good luck.. watching your channel it great!

For hand hauling in the anchor. There ought to be a way using a halyard to raise the rode up in the air in a pulley, so you can just use your weight to pull down the chain/rope. Maybe some kind of ratchet, or easy lock off. And of course it has to drop in the locker and not pull up against the side of the boat. (So a bracing line (or two) from the bottom of the pulley to a cleat(s) to keep the whole thing in position.) Just thinking out loud. Figure it out, call it the SamLass, patent it then let us know how much money you make.
