Brother, I have been looking for someone to explain to me this concept for years. Every person I ask gives this convoluted half assed answer. I like you said in the beginning, I knew the pentatonic and caged and I knew yhey went with eachother, but anytime I’d ask someone, they would give me something that contradicted both concepts. Thank you so much, I’m going to watch this video about 8 more times and I think you have just broken my plateau

Patreon member here! Working through this amazing video and stick on something. In your example chord progression at the end, you do both a 6th string G major and C major. What happens here because you can’t play position one of the major pentatonic scale in both places?
@Samjamguitar
@Samjamguitar Жыл бұрын
hi Keith! You would play G major pentatonic position 1 over the G chord and C major pentatonic position 1 over the C chord. remember that the CAGED shape determines the position you play! if you have watched my videos on the CAGED system for guitar then you will know that the correct order for CAGED chords is not CAGED but EDCAG i.e if you are using an E shaped chord then this would be position 1 - D shapes use position 2 - C shapes use position 3 - A shapes use position 4 and finally G shapes use position 5. so you simply need to identify which shape you are using to identify each chords corresponding pentatonic position. in the case of both the G and C chords in the last example that both use a sixth string root and are also both E shape chords, this would require you to use position 1 pentatonics over both also! hopefully that helps however if you need further assistance then drop a comment on my PATREON page and I would be happy to do a quick dedicated video to explain further!

Hello, and thank you for your awesome vid's ....I am wondering if you , or anyone could help me out with understanding something.....My question is kinda loaded with a couple of things....Assuming I'm playing G major ( E shape ) playing around in that respective pentatonic shape, then move to C Major ( A shape )....Do my licks now come from that A shape pentatonic pattern?...Secondly: When I move to D major ( A shape ) Am I to play again in the A shape pentatonic? Whats confusing me is, I like moving through the pentatonic shapes 1 - 5 ....however now that I'm learning this Rhythm / lead style, I am confused about which pentatonic shape "is next" For example....C major A shape....slide into D Major A shape confuses me....do I play around in the same A shaped petatonic? ........When just soloing its easy to see which shapes i can move in and out of, and the order of them....but now with chords, I'm confused. Hope this all makes sense

Hello, Great Video series and very well presented in an easy to understand way. Watched this one couple of times, so ok,, combining major pentatonics of G,D,C and minor pentatonic of E... this would give us the G Major scale ? so can we use for example C dorian? or D myxolydian or any other "mode"..or perhaps Em pentatonic with an added C note ? thank you👍

First of all, your videos are great, really well explained and with the examples shown. I do have a question, in this video you are concentrating on positions 1 and 4 and their corresponding chord shapes however you play in the 1st position again for the 2nd example but the 4th position is at the 12th fret. Of course it sounds good because we can move in and out of the shapes. I just want to make sure I wasn’t missing something
@Samjamguitar

Okay so at the 4 minute mark you go into A minor 4th position but in the example you play D minor 5th fret, I just thought your example would be A minor caged at the 12th fret you even talk about A target notes 4th position. I hope I explained okay and I know later you play progression so it’s all good
@Samjamguitar
@Samjamguitar Жыл бұрын
Ahh I see! Yes my example is in Dminor! It really should matter where you play the example as the point of all of this is that each shape and corresponding pentatonic position are moveable.

Wait if I understand correctly... that is always using the corresponding pentatonic pattern for each chord, major or minor, and it would work . That is testing the limits of visualisation. You have to assimilate all the patterns

hey sam! I really love your lessons, thank you! I had question about the last chord progression -- if you play G Major Position 1 (E Shape) and the corresponding G Major Pentatonic Position 1 over it, the finger barres the third fret for the chord but then the scale lands on the second fret for the third and fourth tones of the scale, so it kind of displaces the "overlapping" images I have in my head for the CAGED shapes fitting into the pentatonic shapes -- is this just something to keep in mind while learning the pentatonic scales and how it all fits together? thanks again!
@Samjamguitar
@Samjamguitar Жыл бұрын
Think of overlapping more as being within easy reach without shifting hand position....it's very normal for notes to fall outside of corresponding chords but you should see the chord shape within the scale easily!

Cant tell you how many video's I've watched on utilizing penatotnics and CAGED to its fullest, could easily shred through all 5 positions, and knew of the positions in each box, but this was the first video that actually clicked, and before the video ended I was playing all over the neck switching between major/minor keys with ease! Unbelievable video!!

Great video man! You should do a playlist with specific licks according to the positions they live in. For example, 10 licks in position 1, 10 in position 2 etc etc both for major and minor! 😅

I have a series on the 5 positions of the minor pentatonic (each video has a few links in each pattern) I have also done the same for each position of the blues scale!

Bro, I have been looking for ages for a video like this. There's so many videos on CAGED and pentatonic scales but none really explained the connection between both. This video is a game changer!

This is definitely the clearest explanation I’ve ever heard on this. I’m excited to try this with progressions progressions that use the ii and iii chord, as well as modal progressions like the “mixolydian vamp” and with Lydian and Dorian progressions. Do you have any videos of anything like that?

Love the idea but your examples are way too complicated. I can't make out what you're doing even at half speed.

The purpose of this video is not to copy my examples. Instead, you can use it as a guide to connect each CAGED chord with its corresponding Pentatonic Pattern to create your own fills and licks!
