Sammit, you probably won't see this but in boosted applications the front main seal on mx-5 engines is prone to blow out due to high crankcase pressure. Part of this is down to the PCV valve that, even when new, can't cope with boost. A direct replacement that will be able to handle boost is a pcv valve from a Mazda 323 GTX. I believe Greg Peters from thecarpassionchannel made a video on this topic as well. Also Alex Kersten from Carthrottle had his front main seal blow out due to not changing the pcv valve to the 323 gtx's. I hope you get to read this.

Sam you can ‚tune‘ the front crankshaft seal. You can shorten the spring that is in there. You just have to peel it out of the rubber ring, find where the spring is connected together and twist it a bit so it comes apart. Then shorten it for about 4 threads and then you assemble it all back together. With this you have more pressure with the rubber on you crankshaft and there should be no leak. We do this to all our engines after going for better oil pumps. I hope you’ll read this and it will help you out. 👋🏻 greetings from Germany.

I had the same issue with my recently built Turbo Miata 1.6, spent a few weeks meticulously building mine and the damn crank seal ripped on me within 15 min of initial break in. Swapped it with a spare that came with the timing kit and 💥 she was back up and going. Just waiting on the Bosch esi6 brake fluid and new tires this week.

gobee - so true, I went slow and everything cause I needed something to pass the time. Mine might be a beefy oil pump before I bought it cause I see the same higher oil pressure but it not mine did the same exact thing. The seal that came with the ITM timing kit seemed to have did the charm, but I haven’t checked it too much more.

The turbo oil return being so low plus your PCV being blocked off would have been the reason you got all that smoke. The un-vented crankcase pressure would have pushed oil up the return line, into the turbo and past the seals.

I have no experience personally from engine builds. But have looked at many engine builds where the O2 sensor gives up on the dyno or even when you just test drive it. My thought is the amount of mounting lube and oil that's applyied when it's essemblied. Is just too much for the sensor and it's either gets dirty of oil and lube and when it's burns up with higher rpm and heat it's getting too hot and gets damage. Just a thought though as it's happens so often or the sensors quality is just bad. It's also hard to avoid. Maybe do a temporary downpipe that is pointing outside of the car. Or use an old sensor and after the dyno or when the oil and lube seems to be burned out you put in the new sensor. Maybe ask Jack if he seeing a lot of O2 sensors failure during tuning on newly put together engines. And especially when they have replaced rods and pistons and rings. Maybe a good cleaning of it after the first heat cycles could help it also. And maybe don't set to high of goals to be finished in 1 video. Sometimes things often takes longer than you think. Then it's easy to rush things to get it done. And that's when we make misstakes. So set a little lower goals of what you think you are able to be doing. Then if you reach them it feels better to getting there. And you can also be doing some extra things. With putting out daily content I can imagine that you want to be haveing as much as possible in your videos. But honestly I think that the viewers rather see it's done properly than it's rushed together and you need to be doing it again. Or at least most of the viewers as you have those that like to see failure more than success. Keep up the awesome work Sam. And the winner will have an amazing Miata to drive and have fun with.

I bought an AEM wideband gauge and wired it into my car only to find that the Bosch sensor was faulty. I've read online that that particular Bosch sensor (Bosch 4.9 lsu) is commonly bad from the factory. I decided to send it back and if I ever try another wideband sensor I'll get one that doesn't use the Bosch 4.9 lsu sensor.

It will take a while to burn that oil out of the exhaust. You could try and take out the o2 sensor and clean it. And those aluminium rods do work. You have to heat the piece with the hole in it.
