The biggest mistake that led to the stagnation of Samsung Dex was the closure of the Linux on Dex project. Support and hardware acceleration of Linux systems would drag out new users who were looking for an alternative to Windows. With today's Qualcomm processors, Samsung could even try its own separate operating system, more interesting than ChromeOS. Unfortunately...

Linux on DeX was barely used. It had no hardware acceleration and was clunky to use. It had no communication between Android and the Linux environment aside from a pass through folder for files, which meant anything you were working on in DeX or the standard Android UI did not carry over to LoD. It made absolutely no sense.

There are achievable. Just take a look at the Termux development. I'm not going to get into theoretical discussions about Linux on Android and virtualization / containerization topics. It's also worth noting that there is WSL on Windows, Crostini on Chrome OS, Docker on macOS, and others. So why is the idea of Linux subsystems still being developed there?

The whole point of DeX is that you have a single device with a single OS and single instance of your data and applications - no synching or working across multiple platforms. If that's what you want to do, you're better off just getting a device that runs a different OS in the first place to use alongside your phone.

I appreciate how you included all sides of the ecosystem into the argument. I think that Samsung & the App Developers need to work together to make DeX & the apps more user-friendly and feature rich. I pretty much do all of my work in a Chrome browser by having multiple bookmarks/tabs open in Chrome at once. If Samsung and the Chrome devs could come together to give DeX full Chrome desktop functionality, I would be completely sold! Then, I would just grab myself a pair of AR Smart Glasses, and my entire tech setup would be set! I could literally work from anywhere with just my phone, a bluetooth keyboard (w/track pad), and my smart glasses. Super cost effective and mobile...that's the future of tech to me!

Samsung is a big manufacturer of parts and peripherals for PCs. So they have a natural interest in not completely disrupting the PC market.

It's similar to why Apple has always been hesitant to make the convergence of ipados and iOS, even when their iOS MacBooks run the same M chips as their iPads and iPad pros. From a hardware seller's standpoint, all in one devices are a gamble because while you may have more new users attracted to the convenience of one device, you also stand to lose the one person that has a phone, a tablet, and a laptop from the same company. In this case it's even worse because outside of gaming, the flagship Samsung phones can run as a phone, a tablet in dex mode, and if they worked on dex more, a laptop AND a desktop. The tech is there, but nobody wants to make $1,800 once vs 1800, 1000, and 1200 for higher tier devices of those categories.

I think you pretty much covered it.. Android as an OS is pretty robust. It probably needs a tweaked kernel designed for more optimized multitasking at best, but you can certainly get by with Android as it is today... What Dex really needs are desktop class context aware apps. Android is fully capable of it, it's just that no one wants to properly build them... There are a handful of apps that fall into that category... But it's just a handful and that's the REAL problem. More apps would make it more useful... In the end, I think Android is Google's best operating system with the most potential, even more so than Chrome... It's up to Google to set the pace with app development (at least with their own apps) and encourage appropriate app development. Context aware apps (apps that are hardware sensitive enabling them to change their UI depending on the hardware context, as in mobile or tablet) are unique to Android... Making them desktop class is the logical next step not just for Dex, but for Android as a whole and could even cause a shift in the way people use computers and the overall expectation of what an OS is capable of... I use Dex and quite frankly I wouldn't buy a smartphone (the personal computer of the modern age) without that kind of functionality. It has amazing potential... The hardware is there (modern devices are more powerful than a PS4 computationally), it just needs creative software...

One problem is that certain apps are not able to run two instances of themselves at the same time. On a proper computer, you are often using two windows of word processor to move things back and forth. You cannot do that on Android. It is getting better, but it depends on developers, if they want to support this feature. You also cannot drag and drop or copy-paste between applications, like you are used on a proper computer. I have never realized, how often I was using this feature, until I tried to use Android in desktop mode.

You can absolutely run multiple instances of Office in DeX. You can also drag and drop between apps, although compatibility depends on developers implementing the functionality. It's a native Android feature.

So, yah I am late to the party, but did help myself to a ViswSonic TD2423d 24" touch screen monitor. I mainly use it for my Raspberry Pi 400. How ever I did test it with my Dex Pad and it works. No drivers needed, just out of the box connection of USB cable and HDMI, and touch works. So, for me I believe it is mostly developer of apps to realize the potential of Android.

Dex just reskins google android. There's limits to what you can do with this. It's impressive what Samsung has been able to do it to give you a desktop like experience. Google is releasing a desktop mode for their phones. Hopefully this allows dex to become more powerful

If DEX could run full Office applications it would mean I always have my pc in my pocket. A monitor+keyboard at home and one at work and I’d be set. Maybe with Office switching to ARM and snapdragon this is a real possibility.

Great points, the only hang up I have using my Edge 30 Ultra (Smart Connect) as a desktop are the things you pointed out, the hardware even on a 2022 phone (snap 8+ Gen 1 and 12gb) is plenty. It's possible like the Pixel 9 will have s desktop mode perhaps which might help google move things along with Playstore requirements or something 🤷‍♂️

Using DeX daily I can't tell clearly that the biggest limit of DeX is the apps, sadly Android apps don't have enough quality control, even without talking about DeX so many apps don't look or work great just when using a tablet. And that is what makes it feel just okish.

I use DEX with XReal Air AR glasses. Its amazing, i just use a bluetooth keyboard. I travel light for sure with no compromising

Well, I would advise Samsung DeX users to purchase a touchscreen enabled monitor to alleviate mouse issues. The mobile version of Microsoft Office is down to Microsoft limiting the mobile versions of PowerPoint and Word. The work-a-round could be for Microsoft to do what Canva does and make it cloud / Web based. Samsung, app developers, and Qualcomm ought to team up with apps aimed to take advantage of DeX driven by Qualcomm SoCs. Samsung needs to develop apps for DeX also! What about upgrading its Studio app for video editing? Why not either create a viable mobile competitor to Photoshop and Illustrator???? I would also add support for at least 2 monitors for DeX.

Do you have any idea if how expensive those touch screens are? Also having another app like photohop is nearly impossible because of the licences and exclusivity agreements that Photoshop has.. it's a monopoly

@@mohamadsorya6718 Well, it depends on what kind of portable touchscreen you want. Expect to pay anything between £200 to £400 upwards. There are some good Photoshop-like apps such a Lumii and a few others. I guess it just depends on what you want to achieve.

honestly, the potential of dex being a key feature of their phones could push a lot more adopters. first and foremost, if there are no developers or a small number, create some of your own apps. make samsung internet something that can also work with windows/macOS other than the extension they give.OK , maybe that won't do, but perhaps, make samsung internet compatible with chrome extensions. make the right click more usable like how you would on windows/mac/linux but only when using dex. Another thing is to make sure it's in their mid range phones as well. I come from a "developing" country; where kids in schools can end up using this for classes and such. I use kiwi browser btw and that is what makes me able to actually work with my extensions that i need like okta. Samsung should see this as an opportunity to get the kids to be "used" to using samsung devices. Look what apple did with the education line -- it's overpriced sure, but it's overpriced and being used by children who will grow up wanting to use apple as they're used to it. Potentially , make it a chromebook mode in a way but more useful. start making it not only a flagship thing (since they don't or barely mention dex in their flagship keynotes anyhow) and make docking stations that are cheap to high end versions. Show the use case; not only for work; for students, for tinkerers , etc. I think motorola did a good job with their desktop mode. not as polished as dex, but damn near it. Huawei's desktop mode before was good too. LG , sadly , will be missed. I still think Samsung got to think from this perspective. Even in S.Korea, the kids are levitating towards apple despite having samsung pay as a default in their outlets there. Samsung got to think further than resting on their laurels and bloody copying apple's airpods. If samsung removes dex, i prolly won't go with them anymore. It reduces my potential use case rather than lugging around my laptop everywhere. my tablet which is a samsung while slower in benchmark to my iPad m4, still more useful. just need a real desktop tier browser first and other AAA apps along with it. Slack should have a tablet mode but they do that only for iPads. so i use the browser which still works. iPad has a lot of blockage for me in some things like ahem, certain things like kodi. their safari loads google mail better than samsung internet imo. kiwi browser, i needed to use an agent to spoof my browser to something else. However, i know casuals won't know or care. I load samsung dex on my tablet at my office recently and my colleague was like woah, it can do that? and i was like yes. So close yet so far, samsung. you can do it, fk the AI shit..who cares...it's barely useful. other than some ooh, that's not bad..

I don't find a lot of use in Samsung Dex other than transferring files from Mac and the other way around. It's fast and reliable (I don't like the low frame rate but not a deal breaker). But it's good to know it's there as a pseudo-computer in your pocket. I hope they continue to improve on it but I know there's not a lot of people who use or aware of Dex.

The problem is Samsung sells laptops. It's not in their best interest to develop dex to the point where it replaces something they sell. They have more to lose than they do to gain from maxing out dex's potential

Apple sells iPads and MacBooks and yet they were able to figure out how to find a balance between them so that they don't cannibalize sales. Samsung gave up on Dex when they really should have gone hard on making it a solid productivity tool for those who don't need a PC.

If Google play would push developers to update all the apps in store to Android 12L with rich media api for drag and drop support. That would be a huge step in the right direction. Then we need the ability to add audio plugins into media applications and we need Tablet browsers to stop forcing users into the mobile apps of googles webapps by force launching anytime you try to visit the web app. Those three things alone would open up the Dex experience to feel way more premium.

get xreal glasses and a foldable keyboard/ pocket mouse. then use google remote desktop and you have 100% your desktop at your fingertips, or RDP and a vpn into your network. I do video editing on my home pc/work pc from dex and my fold 5 all the time... Its that easy guys.....

I just dont get why they do artifical limitations, like I can run stand alone emulators just fine on DEX, I can run emulation station fine on my phone but somehow it refuses to run emulation station on Dex. it just says "can't run in Dex. It's designed for phone Home Screens" or something. but if I force exit Dex it returns to just regular screen mirroring, in which case I can run Emulation station but all the emulators that actually run the games run all messed up (weird screen size and resolution etc.)

I do use Dex to my Mac and I noticed my S21 Ultra is warm after transferring files (say around 15-20m) which isn't a big deal. At first, I was thinking that it shouldn't heat up but again, it's as if you're just using the phone, which makes sense.

Honestly, I tell people to just buy like a used tab S7 or 8 rather than use their phone and plug it into an external monitor that you have to buy. Because those are such niche products they're not manufactured in huge numbers and they're extremely expensive for what they are. I like them and everything, but wouldn't it be more convenient to just carry around a 11-in tab s7 with 512 GB and an SD card or whatever.

It's the lack of ability to run windows programs. Only being able to basically run Mobil / tablet apps keep it from reaching that lv of PC. It seems to me that developers will always make Mobil version have less abilities otherwise the PC format would really suffer.

If dex will be like desktop pc in terms of UserExperience it will be like yet another *nix distro. Just with portable pocket size case. It would better suit as optimized toolbox with few but very convenient apps like now. Remote desktop mode and dex as handy terminal client is underestimated, with low lag and fast gui responses user can do a lot on full scale remote pc/mac. It cannot excel in all things.

If you sign in to your one drive account in Samsung internet do you get full office 365? Is office 365 better than the mobile versions of Word, Powerpoint and Excel?

That is the million dollars question I was searching. If the online version works well... you have the office 365 without limitations and that is amazing... I have the desktop version and many times I still use the online version in the desktop pc. Dex is amazing and full of potential... would love to try it.

The biggest limitation for me is I'm unable to cast Dex from my S24 Ultra phone to my S9+ tablet. I can cast from my phone to a tv or a Windows computer, but not a Samsung tablet. This makes no sense to me.

Samsung could have an easy win to showcase DeX by letting it run directly on the inner display on the Fold series. They don't and seemingly won't allow that. There is a thread on Samsung Members that's now a few years old and is the most commented, most liked thread on all of Samsung Members asking for this. Samsung has done nothing. A DeX capable computer in your pocket, no external screen required. Could be a great sales pitch, but Samsung doesn't bother. I used DeX as my primary PC for three years. The lack of quality software and the superficial updates Samsung gave DeX which did nothing to address long standing fundamental issues led me back to Windows. I still have a Fold and would consider switching back if I could run DeX directly on my Fold, but until then...

I would love to have a lapdock where you could just fit the phone and have the keyboard and monitor available without the phone hanging off. Then it would be possible to use it as a traditional notebook. Unfortunately, these brands that produce lapdocks charge the price of a notebook, so people think twice and give up. It's better to buy a Windows notebook. In this case, Microsoft and Samsung continue to win on both ends, and we just lose.

It's not that difficult to get an adhesive solution to stick your phone to the lapdock if that's what you really want. Trying to integrate someething like that in the lapdock itself is asking for failure given the wide variety of sizes and shapes of phones.

Windows Phone wasn't comparable. It did not have multitasking, for one. You could only run a single app at a time. The UI looked like Windows but it didn't behave like Windows.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9300 can pretty much hang with the 2020 MacBook Air M1, which is still a powerful ultrabook in 2024, _even with its passive cooling!_ The Apple M-series chips are closely and directly based on the A-series chips from the iPhone, and the best Android phones are very close to the iPhone's performance. Dex is Ok. The gripe I have is that you go to your favorite streaming services you pay for and it blocks the video.

@@mikehawk7307 a USB cable to a PC, I assume. Not to a monitor. That's your problem. That's a limitation of DeX on PC due to HDCP. That limitation is not present when using DeX directly to an external display. Why would you need to use streaming apps via DeX when you're already using a PC, anyway?

LoD was a novelty. It had little practicality. You can run a much more capable instance of Linux on Android using Termux X11 these days than LoD ever offered.

Isn't mobile phone hardware these days capable of running full Windows? Why not just allow dual-boot? Microsoft could make a comeback into the mobile market with an Android phone with Windows docking capability.

It's not that easy. There are no drivers, boot loaders are locked in many cases, and getting a legitimate copy of Windows for ARM is not straightforward.

Good Morning: Every year samsung dex receive mirror changes and updates. Dex is the future, of in hand computing. Take a look at any star trek, and you will see some form of advance computing device that is hand held. That can interface with other devices. Like Screen casting. The answer to take Dex to the next level, has been right In front of us all. Dex is to android, as is Good is to Chrome. I have a idea. Change The name of Dex to Dex Advance. Have Some type of open source, compertishion. Dex Advance will become our new type of tricorder, that can do it all. when An App is download, Dex Advance see that the app, can be enhanced, All productivity applications. Dex become our new Supercomputer like the one on the USS Starship Enterprise. To Boldly Go Where No App Has Gone Before. I have more Idea, then I have the tech skills to get it done. They paid you pretty good. I've switched from apple to samsung 3 years ago. Samsung is way much behind to make it as efficient as apple. There are alot of features samsung need to improve. Specially the customer support. Who actually understand english as well
