Originally from the 1935, musical opera, Porgy and Bess, written by George Gershwin, while his brother Ira, wrote the lyrics, Sammy absolutely kills his character in the film version. Released in 1959, as a movie, Sammy Davis Jr. played the role of Sportin Life, a bad character. He sang, danced, and acted like no other could, absolutely carving his history in Hollywood. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Great trip back Bennett. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦

Sammy Davis, Jr. actually began much earlier than the '60s. He was born in 1925. He was a child performer with his father and uncle in the Will Maston Trio in 1933 Vaudeville. So, he had a lot of time to develop his talents.

Sammy Davis, Jr's career started in the late 1920s, not the 1950s. He was born in December of 1925. In 1928, at age two, Davis began his career in Vaudeville with his father Sammy Davis Sr. and the Will Mastin Trio, which toured nationally. His film career began in 1933 when at age seven he played the title role in the film Rufus Jones for President, in which he sang and danced with Ethel Waters. Davis was active in show business until he died in 1990, having appeared in the TV special Sammy Davis Jr.'s 60th Anniversary Celebration, which won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy, and in the film The Kid Who Loved Christmas, in that year.

When I was three I would pack my child's suit case and pretend I was going to New York to visit Sammy! He could also do imitations!

I saw the movie, and I also have the CD with all the songs on it, both great. Sidney Poitier and Pearl Bailey was in the movie as well.

The "g" in the word "Porgy" is a hard g as in the words get, garden, and go.

I counted only about 6 camera cuts throughout the entire sequence.

Porgy and Bess was/is an opera specifically written for an all-Black cast -- quite unheard of in the 1950s. Sidney Poitier played the male lead, and if memory serves, Lena Horne the female lead character (and Sammy Davis absolutely stole the show). The movie featured ALL the great Black actors, singers and dancers of the era, and is well worth watching. (So is "Carmen Jones", by the way -- a modern movie adaptation of George Bizet's opera "Carmen", again with an all-Black cast and set during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Definitely worth checking out, too!)

It was written for the stage, in the 1930’s, by Gershwin.

Unfortunately, Harri, this movie is very, very difficult to see because Gershwin didn't like this movie rendition of his original stage musical and had all copies taken out of circulation. I got to see it in its entirety on American TV when I was a young boy. I thought it was great then, and still do now!

Sammy is the best!! Gregory Hines performed another song from Porgy and Bess called, There's A Boat That's Leavin' Soon for New York in the movie White Nights. Another stellar performance worth checking out. He and Sammy were very close and you can see how Sammy inspired this performance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGrJYZqoe6mbkKssi=qs2re9TZXvnarg58

Unfortunately, in this time period not a lot of white people would go see an all black cast in a movie, and an opera to boot. Its a beautiful film. "I Loves You, Porgy," is a gorgeous song and the street vendors calling out their wares is a precursor to the similar scene in, "Oliver," many years later.
