Ronald McFondle But they could still Do variety shows with the music of today and mix it up. I don't understand why someone doesn't just start up the variety genre again and modernise it. Things cannot always stay the same but why not innovate? Instead did just producing game shows and a factor and all of those shows which are essentially just game shows where people "win"'something. In the days of Dihann Carroll here, they were doing it just simply to entertain us. No one was "winning" - that's the main difference. The variety show ended once people had to start to always win prizes for being "the best singer or apartment block or losing the most weight or designing something etc etc." it's boring. Please just bring back sheer entertainment.

Jhonni, During that period, people studied music, diction, etc so that they were true professionals that happened to have talent. Moreover her makeup was well placed and not over done. She looked natural and dressed in such a way that was not overly provocative. That is why this video that was probably done in the 1970's looks so current. By the way many women and men looked and dressed beautifully. TV variety shows rules. Today no one wants to look at the crap on tv or look at the so called entertainers. They are to raunchy, ignorant and disgusting for my taste.

Not true. Hazel Scott, an African American jazz pianist and singer had her own show in 1950; the American sponsors pulled the successful show because whites, racists in certain states complained. Hazel was also the first African American to WIN a lawsuit against a restaurant in Washington State, in the Pacific Northwest, which REFUSED to serve her and her band members when they came in for meals on the road. Hazel REFUSED to perform in segregated venues and was escorted from the stage in Texas when she refused to play when she found the audience separated by race. Hazel Scott was married to Adam Clayton Powell, , they divorced in 1960, after 15 years of marriage. Hazel Scott has one son with Adam Clayton Powell; She died of cancer at 61 years old in 1981 in Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC. She is buried in Flushing Cemetery near the plots of the Great Satchmo, Louis Armstrong, and the Birth of Cool trumpet player, Dizzy Guillespie, and Great Saxophone player, Johnny Hodges, who played with Duke Ellington's Band amongst others.
