The people complaining about Joe's tone are clueless. Tone is not just the gear, it's also the player. Nuno Bettencourt once played Eddie Van Halen's rig + guitar, and was surprised he didn't sound like Eddie. He sounded like Nuno.

@@MrIvica76 I’d like to see him cover Hang ‘em High, to name one. Satriani’s songs aren’t even remotely complex. Are you joking? They’re built around a mode or two. We’re not talking a jazz standard here. Give me a break.
@chrisluckhardt
@chrisluckhardt Ай бұрын
@@bayesian2007You don’t know much about Joe Satriani. I’ve been following Joe since 1989 and know his catalogue front to back. It’s light years ahead of Van Halen in complexity. EVH has a few difficult riffs and an untouchable groove. Joe is a master musician using complex songwriting structures and techniques throughout his entire career.
@bayesian2007
@bayesian2007 Ай бұрын
@@chrisluckhardt I saw him in at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia for Flying in a Blue Dream tour. Not of this Earth is a fine album. Surfing with the Alien is my favorite of his. I bet I know more about him and music theory than you do. I went to Van Halen in 1984 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. I also saw them with Sammy on the following 3 tours. Joe is a great guy. He’s a decent player. I used to be crazy into him but he just doesn’t do it for me anymore. This tour, in my view, is a mistake but to each his own. Ed and Alex were the Van Halen engine room. This is a cover band’s attempt.
@chrisluckhardt
@chrisluckhardt Ай бұрын

Also I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and a good question to ask yourself if you were to die today would you go to heaven ? And if yes why ? To find out more please read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on KZbin. 😀

@@davidnoy3964 True, but you can still hear that it's over processed and too "chorus-y." With all of the amp modeling available, I would have expected the tones to be near perfect for VH1 songs AND 5150 songs, and everything in between. There's a guy named @TomShreds, his tones are near perfect and his playing is spot on. It would have been pretty easy to get those tones from him. I like Satch, I've seen him a dozen times since the first G3 show. He's great, love his stuff, but I think knowing he was going to be under scrutiny, he missed the mark. And that's unfortunate because he's a great player.
@davidnoy3964
@davidnoy3964 Ай бұрын
@YoBroMan I hear what you are saying, dude. But what I like about it is that it sounds like Satch and Ed. It's his spin on the King. I'm not sure why Satch would've used any Fractal equipment etc when Ed kept everything simple and went into Valve amps. If Satch had got up there and used amp modelling then somewhere somebody would've said , that's not how Eddie would have done it. I've listened to other uploads, and the Chorus isn't as noticeable.
@YoBroMan
@YoBroMan Ай бұрын
@@davidnoy3964 I agree. plus the whole set is being played a whole step down, so it sounds a little different. I think the mistake was Satch talking about getting the tones and playing the songs. If he had just said, "We're going out and it's us playing a bunch of stuff...", he would not have created this expectation. I'd rather see/hear Satch play as himself then trying to play/sound like Edward.

So was Sammy the third best singer VH ever had? Horrible rendition to the song. They need to avoid playing Dave’s tunes.

Well, DLR certainly wasn't the best singer VH ever had. Even Gary Cherone said that DLR's songs were much easier to sing than Sammy's.

I know I'm probably not the only one that feels this way, but I just think Joe Satriani was not the right choice for this tour..... Should have found some unknown that can play all Eddie's licks perfectly. Joe just puts his own spin on it and it just doesn't have the same impact for a tribute reunion type show. Joe's good in his own right but doing Eddie's thing. It's just not his style. It's not in his. Wheel House.

Well, someone wills always compare ANYONE who Sammy picks as his guitarist against Eddie. That's just silly really when you consider this is not a "Tribute" band which there are many out there. This is a retro-spect of Sammy's career so it will include VH tunes and Chickenfoot tunes. Every other player that can do this will have spots where he/she will put their own spin on things or parts or licks and there is nothing wrong with that. You are right in that it's not Joe's style, but I'm glad it's not. Joe's career has not been to copy Eddie.

The thing is HE CAN play the songs, and he's toured with Sammy for a while now. Why introduce a new variable that could potentially make the tour more problematic? The goal at their age is just to give you a solid show, and they've accomplished it.
